Traditional Cornish Cottage - Beautiful quiet 17th Century Cob, sleep 7

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
Cottage nr Week St Mary, Nr. Bude, North Cornwall, England - In Peaceful Countryside,10 Mins from Sea & Spectacular National Trust Coastline

The cottage is situated just over the Devon border in North Cornwall. It is three miles inland, with sea views from the bedrooms. The entire coast land is National Trust property and is absolutely unspoilt with high cliffs and access to remote coves and bird colonies: wild flowers and butterflies abound. This is the place for a quiet holiday in peaceful surroundings. The Cornish coast walk allows walks along this magnificent coastline.

Whilst this 17th century farmhouse has been restored and refurbished by the architect owner, care has been taken to retain all its period character and charm. The cottage itself is typical Cornish cob farmhouse. It stands in a grassy south-facing lawned courtyard surrounded by deep country. A short walk away is a working farm and in one of the two other cottages in this tiny hamlet live Mr and Mrs Martyn, who keep an eye on the cottage.

Further on, down a very quiet country lane, is the local village of Week St Mary. There you will find a grocer, Post office and a pub. Other shopping is done in Bude – an old fashioned seaside town 6 miles away – Holsworthy is 8 miles and Launceston 12 miles... both pretty hill towns.

In the cottage: downstairs there is a slate-flagged living/ dining area running the length of the house with a big inglenook fireplace and all the firewood needed. The rooms are furnished in comfy unfussy antique furniture. There are books and a colour TV and dvd player. **There is no wi-fi**. For internet connection you must bring your own dongle for your laptop. There is also no landline at the property, so ideal if you want a quiet retreat holiday.

The kitchen has a fridge/ freezer, oven and a sink, and is fully equipped. There is a bathroom, a washer/tumbler dryer and ample hot water on tap at all times. All heating and hot water is included in the price. Heating is provided by electric heaters. There is night storage heating throughout, and the log fire ensures a comfortable holiday all year round.

The cottage offers beds for seven people. There are two very large bedrooms and one smaller. The largest has beams and enough charm for a honeymoon with a double brass bed, painted furniture and spectacular views to the distant sea. The remaining rooms have single beds with duvets. Each bed has a duvet and pillow. *You need to bring bed linen and towels with you*.

Outside is a secluded garden of mown grass, complete with a picnic table. The garden is dog-proofed to prevent dogs running into neighbouring sheep fields. There is ample off-lane parking in the drive. Please note: The property has a self-contained studio barn attached to it which may be occupied during your stay but any visitors there do not use the main garden or driveway and will not disturb your cottage stay.

The cottage is ideally placed for visits to Tintagel, Boscastle, Clovelly, Port Isaac and the Cornish moors where the old tin mines can be found. There is good surfing at Widemouth and also excellent opportunities for riding, golf, walking and fishing. Nearby are country pubs and some good restaurants.

Prices are varied according to season. All directions and information will be sent to you within 2 weeks of booking.

About the Owner

This beautiful cottage has been owned and used by our family for 45 years and we visit it regularly for family and couple holidays. My wife and I fell in love with the north coast of Cornwall in the late sixties. We decided it was the ideal place for a family holiday home and so it has proved for our children and grand children. This part of Cornwall really has not changed very much in 40 years, it still has a fifties feel to it which is ideal.

Quiet retreat away from it all

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at this cottage and appreciated the logs provided for the huge fire, the comfy set up and how warm and cosy it was. The cottage is traditional and set in rolling countryside. Perfect for an escape at any time of the year.

Wonderful, rustic cottage

We loved the cottage, garden and location. Friendly farmer, wife, children and animals next door. Fantastic open fire in the living room which kept my husband and kids entertained! Everything we had hoped for and the most relaxing holiday we have had in years!

From the Owner

The property is a traditional cornish cob farmhouse in a very peaceful environment surrounded by farmland and far reaching views of the sea. We have no landline or internet connection* so its ideal for really switching off from fast paced life and slowing down and connecting with the natural environment. If you enjoy wild country walks or a big open fire to relax by in the evening then this is the house for you. *[If you do want internet connection you can bring your own dongle!]

From the Owner

We love the fact there are no tourists to speak of round us on a hill with views of the sea...and the nearby town of Bude is still old fashioned and not crowded. It's always easy to park at Widemouth Bay. We love walking the coastal footpath and exploring the remote beaches, and wonderful churches in the area, or hiking up Rough Tor. On a sunny day it's perfect. Even when it's raining which is almost never, you know there are National Trust houses and the Eden Project not far away by car... or a book in front of our open fire.
