About Julia

I'm a Secondary teacher of Spanish living in Brussels with my husband and my three children (10, 15 and 17). El Olivo was our family residence when we lived in Spain before moving to Brussels. We all have very good 'recuerdos' of those good times in Chiclana.

Villa Carmen, in Sanlucar Ref. S23111, has been my mother's family residence from the XIXth century. It was rebuilt in 1990 preserving the ancient structure with the patio and the old well.

Julia purchased this villa in 1999

Why Julia chose Los Gallos-Cerromolino

The place, called Coto San Jose, is considered the most high standing in Chiclana Coast because of its large properties as El Olivo mainly as first residence, in a very peaceful, quiet and natural area, out of turist crowded places but close enough to reach them walking. It is a very suitable place for family life, as we can reach all the amenities in a short walk: marina and sports, beaches, paseo maritimo, shops, etc. All the area is provided with bike lanes. A completely different place in Chiclana coast. Lovely walks around the pinewood, by the seaside, around the marismas. My husband, Classics teacher, is so proud of historic importance of the area. Check about Barossa Battle in Peninsular War 1811.

What makes this villa unique

Absolutely special place: You can hear the waves sound in the calm of night. Have an evening drink by the pool in the middle of a pine forest... History, nature, art, gastronomy. So many possibilities!

Beautiful place in a perfect position, wonderful area, very relaxing holiday.

  • 3 of 5

The villa is huge, the garden was very safe for our dogs and big enough for them to run round, the pool is lovely and very clean, but a bit too cold for us so we didn't use it much. The antique furniture and all the ornaments are amazing. The villa was mostly very clean apart from a couple of small niggles, we had to clean the fridge out before putting our stuff in it and there was a pan in the cupboard that had been put away unwashed, but we ran everything through the efficient dishwasher, no problema :-) Plenty of crockery, pots and pans and kitchen utensils but I missed having a jug to make salmorejo in and we could have done with some more serving and salad bowls. The internet was good and fast.

Marco and his family are very pleasant and helpful, the one problem we had with the pool was sorted out quickly. It was lovely seeing Marco's young son go from being scared of our two big dogs to playing with them.

The area is fantastic, we loved Chiclana, the Mercado de los Abastos is worth a daily visit for fish and veg. Cadiz is stunning, as is Vejer and around. Our UK, right hand drive car was a source of amusement to many and it was brilliant being in a place that, although touristy, not too much so and gave me a chance to practice my Spanish.

The not so good - the beds creak, the springs have gone in the single beds and the memory foam double bed wasn't comfortable. The kitchen could do with some updating, the plate racks are greasy and veneer peeling off, the sink doesn't fit properly, nor does the electric hob. The oven, although it was clean inside and works well, looks awful with cooked on grease in between the glass on the door door. We looked up at the ceiling lights in the kitchen and there was a collection of dead bugs behind the glass. The jacuzzi works well but the jets are dirty inside. The veranda is lovely but the paving under the table is very uneven and impossible to keep clean.

The villa is perfectly positioned, a 10 minute drive to Chiclana, 10 minute walk to the nearest bars, restaurants and the beautiful beach and 20 minutes to a strip with plenty of choice to eat and drink. If you have a meal here make sure you go to the Sabor a Mar, fantastic food! We did consider returning but the uncomfortable beds put us off. I wouldn't consider this a luxury villa, with a bit of updating and love and care it could be, but not as it is.

Thanks, Julia, for letting us stay. Your place is lovely, just it could be better with some care.

Lovely stay in a truly spanish villa

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely relaxing stay here. The villa and its grounds are really beautiful, quiet, 15 minute walk to a lovely beach with a beach bar/marina with restaurant. Julia was around to help out when we asked from some fans as the heat was quite intense. Overall and wonderful trip.

Full of Rustic Charm

  • 5 of 5

The owner Julia was there to greet us and make sure everything was to our liking. The property was full of rustic charm and well maintained with a great pool for our family of 4. The property is well placed in a naturally beautiful area of Southern Spain. There is a fantastic beach called La Barrosa 10 minutes walk up the road set in beautiful pine tree inundated sand dunes. 10 minutes walk down the road you find Las Marismas a beautiful marshy area filled with Flamingos and all sorts of other wonderful birds. A short walk away we also found a fantastic road full all sorts of restaurants to cater for any taste buds, from Italian to Mexican and wonderful local cuisine. We will certainly be back for more, thank you very much Julia and Paco for letting us stay at your wonderful home.
