Probably the best kept secret in Europe, the Southern Rias Baixus in Galicia home to some of the most stunning islands and beaches in the world . It is here that you will find Pilgrims Cottage nestled beneath the vineclad mountains .If you would like to get a sense of the area and countryside surrounding our lovely cottage do look at the websites of two of the major bodegas/wineries here, they are Altos de Torona , and Bodegas Terras Gauda, their videos show the vine clad mountains which lie immediately behind our property and the beautiful viewing areas which can be enjoyed by our guests. This is the perfect location to relax in our charming , restored Galician cottage. This is a special place and offers the traveller a high quality experience there is so much more included and no hidden extras , your own large floodlit pool .Beautifully maintained and equipped to a high standard and lots of luxury toiletries and a delicious fruit hamper welcome all our guests plus of course the delicious wine of the region.
Only a 5 min drive to N. Portugal, again stunning scenery.A two country holiday in one. Spectacular scenery and an ideal base for sailing, walking, riding, wine appreciation, food, water sports and artists or just getting away from it all. Superb location, peaceful but with easy access ,Islas de Cies just a 20 min drive + 45 min. ferry ride to these finest award winning beaches ,incredible islands situated in the Ria de Vigo ,Isles de Cies and Islas de Ons ( Google them for stunning images ) named as one of the top 10 beaches in the world and a haven for nature, birds, snorkelling and fantastic ocean views, the islands are protected so visitor numbers are limited, assuring visitors of peace in the most idyllic secret location in Europe.A day spent on the islands is truly memorable.
Delicious sea food restaurants, La Guardia has a fiesta of the Langostine and tapas bars and furancos make for lively ,friendly and very inexpensive dining. An organic micro climate providing fresh flavoursome produce and wines of the highest quality, still at affordable prices.House wines about 4 euros per bottle ! Colourful markets. A plant filled courtyard at the cottage and shaded BBQ area to enjoy informal alfresco meals . Space for children to play happily and a lawned area by the pool with sunbeds and hammocks for relaxed peaceful sunbathing.
Pilgrims Cottage is a very popular cottage because it is so private and has everything you need to enjoy a relaxed break, nothing is too much trouble, its position is ideal because it is private, not overlooked ( up a country lane ) but at the same time just 5 minutes to the main road and all that this amazing region has to offer, one week never seems enough for guests! Key features, well this croft style cottage has very thick granite walls which make it very comfortable in the summer but the glass panelled gallery mean it is light and spacious too. The wood burning stove for winter guests makes for a wonderfully cosy feel .
After a good nights sleep guests are refreshed and ready for the following days activities, rock pooling ,exploring the lanes on foot or bikes, kayaking, swimming snorkeling, riding or simply enjoying their own swimming pool which is available to guests 24/7 .
Breakfasts are always fun at Pilgrims Cottage often enjoyed in the courtyard perhaps after an early dip in the pool ,with so much fresh fruit from the finca and fresh bread delivered to the door and organic eggs from the small holding up the road or pop to the pananderia for wonderful patiserrie and coffee a popular local custom or perhaps chocolate and chorros for the sweet toothed ..
To sum up, Pilgrims cottage is a place to recharge your batteries after doing so many diverse activities here in Galicia, from Santiago de Compostella and Tui with their breathtaking Cathedrals, the Islas de Cies an absolute must, perhaps the historic towns in Portugal of Ponte de Lima and Braga. The numerous food fiestas, Kayaking on the River Minho and bodega visits , the list is endless and the cottage is the place to return to , listen to the wildlife, dabble with some water colours or even watch a movie ( UK TV !) wander in the countryside while the supper cooks or pop out to the surrounding villages for tapas and local sights and sounds.
This is an area completely unspoilt by high rise hotels with long wide bays of white sand, small coves, fishing villages, traditional values and majestic expanses of unspoilt countryside, rivers and rias teeming with fish, birds and so very clean.Galegos respect and nurture the environment and are very proud of this fascinating corner of Iberia, come enjoy, and you will ,we have no doubt be charmed by this lovely property and indeed this region.

Garden and pool great, house poor
From the details about the cottage our family group consisting of two couples, we were very excited to be staying. When we arrived we were so disappointed with the property, although the garden and BBQ area were lovely.
The cottage was very run down, very poor fittings and fixtures. The kitchen was like stepping back into the 1960s with an awful gas stove that had to be lit with a match, lighting the oven was scary as it lit with a bang. No dishwasher, no microwave and a poor assortment of cutlery. The washing machine was in a shed in the garden and was not working properly, it had to be watched and manually turned as the programmes stuck halfway through.
The double bedroom was minute, with a glass door directly into the lounge!!
The wet room shower/toilet was very small and opened into an area directly in sight of the kitchen and lounge, and as the room was so small it was necessary to step out to dry.
The large twin bedded room was so dark that my brother in law called it the cave, the ensuite was at the light end of the room with no door between it and the bedroom!!
Doors and windows stuck and did not fit properly.
All in all not a good experience.
A lovely cottage with fantastic hosts.
We had a wonderful fortnight here with our two young sons. It was a part of Spain we had not visited before so we were keen to explore. The hosts were amazing from the moment we booked and there was a warm welcome to Os Bravos with a cold beer, glass of fizz and plenty of suggestions for places to visit. They could not have done more to make our stay any more enjoyable. It is a great location for visiting Portugal/Galician coast/Iles de Cies and the house itself is very peaceful, in a relatively remote setting (though there is a village bar). Despite some high temperatures the house stayed cool but I can imagine it being warm and cosy in the winter too. Particular highlights for us were the Cies Islands, Santa Tecla Celtic village and fortress at Valença. The morning mist on the river Minho and the evening sun through the vineyards were a photographer's delight. Truly beautiful. Altogether a great holiday, enjoyed by all.
We were disappointed with the standard of accommodation and only stayed one night although we had paid for 10. The main bed was small and my 6'2'' husband did not fit. The kids bedroom did not have a window and was accessed via the bathroom. Our 5 year old son woke up with 24 mosquito bites. The pool water tasted very bitter. The WIFI didn't work. We raised these and other concerns with the owners who were less than receptive. We have stayed at properties booked through Owner's Direct before and had fantastic accommodation with fabulous hosts so were extremely disappointed. It made it a much more expensive holiday than anticipated!
A Fantastic and Peaceful Holiday Setting
We had a wonderfully relaxing holiday at Os Bravos in Galicia. Karl and Judith were very generous hosts, who were always happy to give us useful recommendations on the best places to eat, visit and even made a phone call in Spanish for us to book ferry tickets. Our children loved the cottage and the private garden and pool. We enjoyed several lazy days by the pool as a rest from sight-seeing and barbecues in the evenings - either on the private patio or in the sun garden. The garden itself was beautiful with views of the hills in Portugal. The cottage was very well equipped and the layout suited our family. We found Galacia to be full of friendly people, fantastic food, spectacular scenery and with lots of interesting places to visit. We only scratched the surface of what there was to see - we would love to visit again and would recommend this cottage and part of Spain to everyone - particularly families and couples who like a quiet relaxed pace of life. The highlights of our holiday were the pool (kids' vote ages 8 and 11), a visit to Santiago and a ferry trip to the beautiful Isles de Cies (adults). Thank you Karl and Judith.
Having just spent a glorious 2 weeks in Pilgrim Cottage, I cannot recommend this retreat highly enough. Pilgrim Cottage was a charming, rustic was a charming place to relax in after a day of exploring Galicia. The pool was a beautiful place to relax by on those hot afternoons in Galicia. The gardens were lovely to stroll around also, I can only imagine how these beautiful gardens will look like in bloom!
The owners were always on hand (but also very unobtrusive) to offer advice, often to recommend places of interest to visit, nothing seemed too much trouble for them.
I hope to Visit Pilgrim Cottage again next year, when the gardens are in bloom!
I cannot recommend this charming cottage highly enough. The orignal feachers, the pool, the private bbq area all fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners and I will be telling all my friends about this little haven of paradise and booking for next year for certain. Not to be missed !!!!
