Roof Terrace with Panoramic Views of Sea and Park

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-Nov-2016
Apartment in Ostuni, Puglia, Italy - Central Location, huge roof terrace

Stunning, historical 2 double bedroom apartment in the centre of Ostuni over looking the park with double height barrel vaulted ceilings and a street facing balcony. The apartment is in an ideal central location, decorated in keeping with the historical ambiance of the property but with a modern contemporary feel. We have exposed some of the stone internally to highlight the traditional features of the house. There is a large roof terrace with panoramic views over the sea, historical central Ostuni and the Park (Villa Communal). We have provided chairs, tables and sunloungers on the terrace. The nearby park has a large selection of exotic vegetation, a cafe and a children's play area. The apartment is in the old town of Ostuni, steps way from the many bars and restaurants surrounding the piazza and the historical centre. We provide sheets and towels. There is a flat screen tv, a DVD player, a CD player and we also have WIFI. There is free parking close to the apartment. The lovely Blue-Flag beaches along this coastline are just a short drive away. Pauline our English housekeeper can also give advice on the area and places to visit.

About the Owner

We bought this property after a holiday to Puglia. We travelled around for a few weeks and fell in love with the area. Ostuni was the perfect central location. A magical place, a white city perched on a hill overlooking the sea and olive groves. We are based in London (although originally from the North East of England) and spend as much time as we can in Ostuni.

Disappointing and dirty

  • 1 of 5

Flat was dirty and we had to buy our own cleaning products to clean as there were none in the flat. Wooden table had layers of dirt and had obviously not been cleaned in a very long time. Bathroom not fit for purpose. Disgusting shower curtain that had not been cleaned/replaced in ages. Shower curtain too long so was damp and mouldy and very unhygienic. Shower head needed descaling so the already unsatisfactory flow of water squirted all over the place making the floor very wet and slippery. To make matters worse, bathroom is up 3 very steep and slippery steps from the kitchen, not ideal for young children. Cooking facilities were the bare minimum and all looked grubby. We did not use them at all and ate out during our week stay. Luckily Ostuni is awash with eateries, so this was not a problem. We were 2 adults and found the facilities inadequate, cannot imagine how a family with young children would cope. Sheets were grimy also. The property description does mention the fact that the stairs leading to the property were not suitable for people with mobility issues but nothing can prepare you for how steep and narrow they actually are. Again, would hate to have to negotiate these with young children. The only positive is the location but I am sure that it would not be difficult to find a much better standard of accommodation in the area as Ostuni is a very popular (possibly too popular) tourist destination. In retrospect, somewhere like Martina Franca would make a more authentic base from which to explore beautiful Puglia.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry that the guests found the apartment so terrible. This comes as a complete surprise to us as the only contact the guest made during their holiday was to our house manager about the shower outlet being blocked. Our cleaner went round directly and resolved the issue. We find it impossible to believe the description of how dirty the place was e.g. layers of dust on the table and dirty shower curtain. We put a new shower curtain in recently and we had guests with children who left 2 days before this guest arrived who had no complaints and enjoyed their stay. We pride ourselves in ensuring any issues that may arise are resolved. This review is harsh in the extreme and packs a punch to try and discredit our apartment. Surely if they were so appalled by the cleanliness of the apartment then they would have contacted us or complained on arrival or during their stay. We would have then done our best to resolve any genuine issues. Our house manager meets and greets and shows the guest around … we understand these guests were very happy with the apartment on arrival. There are so many discrepancies in this review we would be writing a novel to respond. We offer a clean central apartment in Ostuni at a very reasonable price and if there are any issues or problems we will resolve them asap through our house manager based in Ostuni or by contacting us directly … For future guests we can only hope that you can see through and beyond this review, look at previous reviews for this year on this site and Tripadvisor and make your own judgement. Please call us if you want to chat through. We welcome you to our apartment in Ostuni Tania and Mike

Infested by pigeons. Needs updating.

  • 1 of 5

The property has a pigeon's nest on the bathroom window, therefore it was not possibile to open the window during our stay. Inclosed balcony could not be opened as well due to up to 16 pigeons on the oposite building (only 3 meters away) and to top it the pigeons' poo was just outside the front door.. This made the apartment with no air conditioning unbareably hot and stuffy. Facilities are old: fridge, washingmachine, shower, sofa (stained and old).... First week we did not have internet: the technical support had to come to fix it.

The owner did not answer the phone calls,

The house keeper's explanations were that she did not know the house well.

I would never book this property again,

Owner's Response: Oh dear. We have had our apartment in Ostuni for eleven years and fortunately in that time only a handful of guests who have dismayed and shocked us. Ivana who stayed in our apartment for 2 weeks from late July has chosen to write this disparaging review. Prior to this review the only direct contact initiated by Ivana was an email a few days after her holiday. The email was a one liner saying disappointed , want our security deposit back and three hundred pounds refund. We had no contact from her during her stay and no explanation or feedback on why she was disappointed. So I called her to find out what the issues were. It transpired that she had a pigeon phobia. I explained that Ostuni had its fair share of pigeons like most places in Italy and that we had no control over where they flew or perched. We have never ever had any reports of pigeons flying into the house but were sorry she felt unable to open any of the windows in the apartment. She admitted her phobia was extreeme. The other issues she raised were the WIFI which had a wobble and she was happy that was resolved. A small leak of water after she had used the washing machine. We apologised for the inconvience and within days of her feedback have installed a new washing machine. We charge a very reasonable rate for our two bedroom Ostuni apartment and the guests that left a day before Ivana arrived submitted a good review. We always welcome feedback and respond quickly to issues we have control over. Contact during guests holidays are usually with our house manager but we are open to direct contact. In this instance we had no contact from Ivana during her stay and no contact from our house manager flagging any concerns that had not been resolved. We have known our house manager for eleven years and have total faith and trust in her services. We can only assume that Ivana was not happy that we didnt agree to her demand of a forty per cent refund. We understand from Ivana that she has now bought a house in Ostuni so will no longer require a holiday rental. We wish her well with her new house, sympathise with the pigeon phobia but are disappointed and saddened that she chose to write such a scathing review. You can see from previous reviews that this one stands out in its extreeme negative tone and content. We warmly welcome future guests and offer you a great central base in Ostuni . Tania and Mike

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Spent two weeks here great location for getting to Bari and Leccie and all the other towns and cities in-between. Great if you are willing to drive beach about 7/9 Km away. Ostuni is a great place and most of the locals we met where very helpful Doesn't have a lot to do for 15 to 18 year old but would recommend for a short stay.

Great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

Initially disappointed as I entered the building and apartment but turned out to be a fantastic place to stay. Good value, good location beside oldest part of town, very clean and comfortable. Best was the views from terrace where you could sit and eat - Ostuni beautiful.

Couple of minor problems dealt with very quickly by excellent staff readily available.

Would definitely stay there again and recommend to others. Need to note there are steep steps to apartment and terrace.

Fabulous location

  • 3 of 5

We had a whole month in beautiful Ostuni. The apartment was in a very good location - right opposite a lovely park where the locals use which was great for people watching. The beach was 10 minutes away and the very centre of Ostuni only 5 minutes walk. Tania and Mike were very good hosts. We look forward to going back hopefully soon.

Location

From the Owner

We love good Italian food and warm weather .. and there is plenty of both in Ostuni! The people are friendly and there is so much to do ... walking, cycling, site seeing, beach days, exploring caves, historical buildings and unspoilt countryside ...

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Brindisi at 30 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Mona Lisa at 0.1 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Brindisi at 30 Kilometres Nearest Train : Ostuni at 2 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Range of restaurants at 0.1 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Pilone at 4 Kilometres Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

It is possible to hire bikes and we can also recommend local cookery courses. There are also tennis courts in Ostuni.

Coast/Beach:

Beaches are about 10 minutes drive. Our nearest favourite white sand beach is Pilone II. Pilone 1 is also lovely with natural shade from the foliage and trees surrounding the beach. There is also a cafe there set back from the beach. 10 minutes will bring you to Torre Guacato (at the 'Serranova' turnoff). This is a WWF protected National Park with a stunning, totally unspoilt beach and nature walks/cycle paths behind it. There is also a water park called 'In-Aqua' at Lamaforca Beach.

Travel:

Ryan air fly direct to Brindisi and Bari from Stansted Airport. BA fly from Gatwick to Bari. From Brindisi to Ostuni is a 25 minute drive and from Bari a 45 minute drive. Car is recommended - although we can organise a taxi for you and there are local buses and trains.

Distances:

'Trulli-village' at Alberebello- Cisternino and Loccorotondo on-route, 20 mins. Grotte di Castellana (Italy’s largest underground cave network stunning!), 30 mins. Fasano Safari Zoo, 30 mins. Lecce (City of impressive Baroque architecture), 40 mins. Otranto and coast line, North of Lecce, 1 hour. Galipoli- On the West coast of Puglia- lovely walled, ancient town with long stretches of sandy beaches, 1 hour. Trani- North of Bari lovely sea harbour with many good restaurants and bars, 1 hour.

Further Details:

There are many good restaurants in and around the Centro Storico. favourite ones are: 1. Osteria La Sparacima. 2. Osteria Piazzetta Cattedrale. Rated in top 20 European restaurants by Guardian newspaper, but still cheap! 3. Al Solito Posto. 4. L’Osteria Del Tempo Perso (Michelin Guide). All restaurants in Italy legally have to close for one day of each week to allow the employees to have a rest. For some reason all but two of Ostuni’s restaurants have chosen Monday! Luckily, Al Solito Posto isn’t one of them. If you fancy eating at home during the evening Jane can recommend one of the excellent takeaway pizza places or one of the shops that sell spit-roast chicken with potatoes (£4 for a complete dinner for four). The many bars of Ostuni are all packed every night in July and August, but if you come out of season (October-May), Saturday is the night for partying! Locals tend to eat late and generally bars will not even start getting busy until at least 11pm with many 'peaking' at around 1am and closing about 4am. The restaurant opening times in Ostuni are 12pm until 3pm and 7pm until 11pm. It is important to work round these times as it can be frustrating if you are looking to eat between 3pm and 7pm as all the kitchens are closed! You will find bars open for drinks etc. Most of the shops are closed all afternoon for siesta. And on Sunday and Thursday most are closed all day. The supermarket near the Pink Lady cafe is open 8am until 1pm and then reopens 5pm until 8pm. It is closed half day on a Thursday. Euro Spar shop is open every day 7am until 21.00pm- and Sunday 8am until 1pm. Jane can give you directions to this shop- it is 5-10 minutes drive from Casa Campenella or a 20-30 minutes walk. Plenty of banks with cash points. We do provide an information pack in the apartment with lots of information on places of interest. We also have info on hiring bikes and photography and cookery lessons if of interest.

Facilities

From the Owner

The Apartment really appealed to us as it is so perfectly located. It is a few minutes walk from the old town and main piazza and a short walk to the park. It is an historical building with a large roof terrace where you can see the park, old town and sea... Plus there is an amazing bakery at the bottom of the road ... !!
