The region is renowned for its gentle undulating countryside interspersed with picturesque rivers, lakes and sleepy villages. It is also well known for its gastronomy, wines and sunny climate. The bright and airy ground-floor centrally-heated accommodation, newly decorated in 2008, has been stylishly and tastefully furnished throughout. From a private patio with its garden furniture and barbecue, the front door of the gite opens to a spacious open-plan lounge and dining area with rustic terracotta tiles throughout.

About Mitze van Rixtel

Mitze and Rawdon van Rixtel decided to retire to France in 2006. 'We wanted somewhere hot and sunny, within 7 hours of the channel ports, rural but not isolated - preferably next to a village and within striking distance of the coast.'

Furthermore, they were looking for a large house, an acre of land and a swimming pool. A tall order but they found it in January 2007 - a former doctor's house on the outskirts of Saint Severin - and by April they had moved in.

'It had the added bonus of an immense ground floor surgery, independent of the house which was perfect for renting out as holiday accommodation.'

The two-bedroom gite was completed in 2008 and the first guests arrived that Summer. 'We have given guests every comfort for a hassle-free holiday - truly home from home.'

Mitze van Rixtel purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Mitze van Rixtel chose Charente

Charente lives up to its reputation as the second sunniest region in France, after Provence. Where Saint Severin is; down at the southernmost tip where it meets the Dordogne, you can expect long hot summers with temperatures reaching 30C in May. They gradually soar to 40C or more from July to early September and drop to 26C by mid-October.

The utter tranquility of the region and friendliness of the local people will appeal to anyone looking for a stress-free holiday with nothing to do but relax and enjoy the gentle pace of living. Uncrowded roads make motoring here a pleasure and there are numerous places to visit. We love it here and so do our guests, judging by their comments and testimonials. So much so, that some have booked to return the following year!

What makes this apartment unique

The gite sleeps 4 but for larger parties, we are in the ideal location as there are many places to stay nearby, including a 13-bedroom hotel at the top of our road - easy walking-distance - perfect for family reunions and celebrations.

France is top venue for overseas tourists and increasingly the first choice of UK residents looking to buy either a second home for vacations or a permanent one, when they relocate with their family or when they retire. Saint Séverin is well placed for exploring the Charente and Perigord regions. We offer long

winter lets on a monthly basis at a competitive and all-inclusive rate which includes all heating and electricity cost

Lovely family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic fortnight in this deceptively spacious/well maintained and well equipped gite. The pictures do not really do it justice. With 2 teenagers the wi-fi was a real bonus. The pool area was larger than expected with great views over fields of sunflowers and rolling countryside. A very peaceful setting with a large private terrace which was ideal for star gazing. The local spar supermarket was very well stocked. The owners are very helpful and eager to make your holiday as special as possible. We would highly recommend this gite for a peaceful get away.

Lovely Gite

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in this lovely gite. The outside space and pool area were superb. The friendly owners live in the adjoining house and are available if needed but were very respectful of our privacy. The little village was within walking distance and had all that we needed. Would highly recommend this gite and would certainly like to return.

Lovely gite for a lovely holiday

  • 5 of 5

Mitze and Rawdon were very warm and welcoming and eager to make our stay as good as possible. The gite itself was fantastically well-appointed, especially the kitchen, providing everything you could possibly need, and the pool was always very clean and big enough to enjoy proper swimming! In a wonderful location, only 5 minutes from shops and a restaurant but secluded enough to be relaxing, it was a perfect place. We had a lovely holiday here, made all the better by lovely owners! We would definitely recommend it highly.

Lovely location

  • 4 of 5

A well equipped gite set in extensive grounds, local to a very pleasent village with all amenities including shopping, cafe, bar and an excellent hotel/restaurant. Gite has its own private entrance and patio area with a short walk to the pool and terrace area. Plenty of secure parking. Mitze and Rawdon very friendly and helpful. Lots of villages to explore in the near vicinity.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the review and the helpful suggestion! We have now bought two more sun loungers for outside the gite so that guests can chill out on their own terrace in the evening. Much appreciated by our present guests and we look forward to seeing you both here again!

Fabulous Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Arrived after a long drive from Roscoff and were made to feel very welcome. Mitze and Rawdon are a delightful couple who would do anything to help you enjoy your holiday. The gite is lovely, very well appointed and the pool is wonderful with marvellous views from the sun terrace. The private terrace is great in the evening for sitting out and eating alfresco as well as watching the football training across the road! The village of Saint Severin has everything you need including the all important boulangerie for the morning croissants. Would highly recommend visiting Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne, Brantome and the weekly market in Riberac on friday mornings. We had a perfect holiday and will definitely be back.

Wonderful stay, as always

  • 5 of 5

Mitze and Rawdon's gite in Saint Severin has become our home away from home for our annual summer holiday for the last 6 years, and we have just booked again for next year. They always make us so welcome and nothing is too much trouble for them.

The accommodation itself is first class, and spotlessly clean, with a beautiful, modern and fully equipped kitchen, very comfortable sitting / dining area with digital TV facilities, two very comfortable bedrooms and a large modern shower room.

A private terrace outside the gite is wonderful to sit each evening for an alfresco supper, with table, chairs and sunshade. The pool area is private, with four comfortable loungers, sunshades, and table and chairs, and offers stunning views across the countryside, often with sunflowers in bloom in the next field. The full size and beautifully clean pool is surrounded by lavender bushes, and in the hot sunshine, the scent washes over one akin to being in a spa.

Saint Severin itself is within 5 minutes walk of the gite, and offers a small Spar supermarket (with a superb butchers counter), boulangerie, a couple of bars, a bank with automatic cash point, post office, and newsagent. The option of either taking it easy in this little oasis of tranquility often competes with the desire to explore the surrounding area, and little towns such as Riberac, Aubeterre, Brantome and the city of Perigueaux are all within easy driving distance. This is a marvellous holiday destination and utterly suited to those who want to get away from it all in the beautiful and charming French countryside.

If you have no head for heights then you can have a go at kayaking, take a swim in the river, go fishing or relax with a picnic in the BBQ area where there is a adventure playground for young children. Another place to visit is Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, a medieval town perched on a hill with a unique history and many attractions. For a quiet day in the forest the beauty of Lake Jemaye is hard to beat. Families have two adventure playgrounds and a riverside beach plus long trails to stroll around the lake.

If you prefer gentler pastimes there are many painting, pottery or cookery courses for visitors from professional teachers living locally. For others wanting to improve their language skills, private or group lessons can be arranged by contacting the owner.

There are also courses on wine appreciation including visits to local vineyards. For amateur photographers and birdwatchers we offer an amazing mix of landscape and birds of prey. The best season is in the Autumn and Winter.

Further Details:

About the same distance away, just across the border with Dordogne, there is the small bustling town of Ribérac with its famous Friday open-air market.

The surrounding area has many interesting places to enjoy: the old quarter of both Perigueux and Angouleme, the caves of Lascaux and Villars with their prehistoric paintings, the picturesque towns of St. Emilion and Brantôme, the Bordeaux wine region, Dordogne Valley and Cognac Distilleries are all within easy reach. Atlantic beaches of Royan are about 90 minutes away, Arcachon and La Rochelle, just 2 hours.
