About the Owner

Susan and her mother, Paula, have lived on the farm for many years. Little by little it has been adapted and renovated. We ran a language institute for over twenty years, and now Susan still does some translation work.

Paula is retired now, but still takes an active role in the running of the estate..

Superb accommodation in lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a very pleasant and relaxing week at Quinta da Luz. The wonderfully restored farm is set in its own mature grounds: a mixture of cultivated plots, mature orchards and old trees, not to mention the beautifully landscaped swimming pool. An absolutely delightful idyll, hidden yet close to (and admittedly surrounded by) developments of greater Lisbon, and so conveniently located to all points of interest near and beyond Lisbon -- Sintra, Cascais, Estoril, Cabo da Roca, Mafra... and further afield (ie day trip distance) to Obidos, Alcobaca and Batalha. Very helpful hosts Susan, Paula and Antonio provided everything we needed -- we couldn't have asked for more. In a word, superb!

Magnifique propriété au milieu des citronniers

  • 5 of 5

Excellent property and facilities.

The pool and gardens were perfect as was the villa. A great holiday for our adult family of four. Only 10 minutes drive to Sintra. Thanks to the owners Susan & Paula for their help and friendliness.

A spacious, well maintained house with big garden

  • 5 of 5

The house is spacious and clean,well- maintained and furnished very tastefully.Because of the bad weather we couldn't use the big swimming pool butt we still enjoyed the beautiful garden with a lot of flowers and fruit trees. The owners are very helpfull and kind without disturbing your privacy. Although the surroundings of Lisbon are pretty busy the house and his big garden are an oasis of rest. It's easy to visit Lisbon,Sintra, Cascais and the coast with all the beaches.

Fantastic holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic holiday. Also our children, 13 and 15 years old, enjoyed greatly. The house is amazing. It is spacious and well equipped. It is located on a beautiful green area with fruit trees and a lovely pool.

The location is very central, near Sintra and Lisbon. Susan and Paula are warm and good hostesses.

We would like to come back again to this unique location.

We stayed for a week and wish it had been longer!!

  • 5 of 5

The accommodation is very spacious, clean and very well equipped. It is situated in lovely grounds, with all manner of fruit trees bearing oranges, lemons, etc which Susan and Paula generously shared with us. The oranges were so juicy and we had freshly squeezed orange juice every day.

There are three very friendly dogs on site, and these were one of the highlights of our holiday, our five year old son loved taking them for walks around the grounds each morning, and was keen to get "home" in the evenings to see them, especially his favourite Dianna!! And contrary to another review they are not noisy at night.

The location could not be better, about twenty minute drive from Lisbon (tip... if driving to Lisbon, head to Alameda metro station where there is a large and reasonably priced car park and it is only four stops into the centre of the city). It is also very near wonderful beeches in Estoril & Cascais and the town of Sintra is even nearer with it's wonderful sites to see.

We are already looking forward to returning next year!

From the Owner

We both love living in the Sintra area. We are so near to Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra itself - so convenient yet we are in a little oasis. Although we are very secluded here we have everything we need at a short distance.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Lisbon at 25 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Sintra at 4 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Penha Longa at 5 Kilometres Nearest Train : Rio de Mouro at 3 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : 1C 19 at 3 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Atelier dos Grelhados at 1 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Guincho, Cascais at 8 Kilometres Car: recommended

The beaches of the Estoril coast, such as Cascais and Guincho are within 8 miles and the Atlantic coast beaches such as Adraga, Praia Grande and Magoito are within 12 miles. The whole coastal area is attractive and all within a short drive.

Lisbon Airport is within 15 miles from the Quinta, and we are well placed for road access to the environs. The train station on the Lisbon-Sintra train line is 1 mile away. There is a bus at the door which goes to the nearest train station and the coast.

The Quinta is very centrally placed as it is near Lisbon (10 miles), Cascais and Estoril 7 miles, and Sintra, World Heritage Site, 2 miles. All are easily accessible with a very good direct road network.Guests are well placed to explore the greater Lisbon Region, be it Lisbon, Sintra or Cascais/Estoril, or indeed further afield.

Further Details:

There are many amenities within a nearg distance and there are several good supermarkets nearby. There is a large shopping complex within 1 mile, with a hypermarket, bank, food court, shops and cinemas. Lisbon is a colourful city, with many old areas, the Gulbenkian Museum and many other sites. It is a lively city for places of interest, concerts and dining out. Cascais, on the coast, has an international flavour, with many well known fish restaurants. Sintra holds an enormous fascination, with lovely old buildings and a mystical atmosphere. Not to be missed with so much to see.

From the Owner

Quinta da Luz is a large property and once inside feels like it is in the countryside. There is a strong sense of space, and the gardens flourish under the loving care of Paula. Being in a valley with no other houses in site, we have the advantages of the country, but we are not at all isolated. Within a short distance visitors find plenty to do and see.

  • Notes on accommodation: We require that children be accompanied by an adult in the pool area, which is gated. The house has a log burning stove and storage heating in all rooms. The villa has thick walls and so is quite cool in summer without air-conditioning. Outside: The whole property is in a beautiful setting, quiet and relaxing. The gardens and cultivated area are quite extensive and guests may just ramble on the domain. The property is walled and so safe for children The pool is large (11x 5,5 metres) and is in a lovely lawn area. We have sun loungers for 6, and garden chairs and tables. The pool is shared with the main house and the owners are sometimes at the pool. The pool is gated. There is a large barbecue area near the pool and a private patio with barbecue at the back of the guest house. We often have excess organic fruit and vegetables which we provide. Guests are invited to pick fruit when available. The whole Quinta is an oasis for holiday makers. Utility Room: Cupboard for cleaning materials, iron with ironing board and barbecue utensils. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen included. Maid service on some days. Linen changed once a week, towels twice. Other: Adega has games room with ping-pong. Art gallery with work from local artists exhibited in guest house, with some work for sale. Access to use of artist's studio.
