House in Plouguenast, south of St Brieuc, Brittany, France - A Great Base for Touring Brittany

Please don't use the price quote service on this site - just ask me, especially for longer stays (the site is under new management, and is now very inflexible).

Plouguenast is the centre of a rural community and welcomes visitors. This house is nineteenth century and was originally arranged as a bar. Downstairs was the main public area and the kitchen is now 'behind the bar'. You can still see the step of the old public front door, which is now the middle window.

The house is a short walk from the village shops: a butcher, a baker, a supermarket and a chemist. There are two restaurants nearby that serve at lunchtimes and some evenings, and two bars. The house is easy to find, by the bridge over the River Lie - the starting point for many pretty walks at any time of year. Dogs are welcome. Fly fishing, cycling (off-road and on) and pony trekking are popular nearby. There is kayaking on the river during the summer, which is ideal for beginners. But the best aspect of this house is that it is an excellent base for days out - to the beautiful beaches of the bay of St Brieuc on the north coast, medieval towns such as Pontivy and Josselin in central Brittany and the dramatic southern coastline of Morbihan. Wildlife is abundant nearby - the area is especially rich in birds. There are many prehistoric sites. The food is local, with great meat, seafood and cheeses and seasonal vegetables and fruits. For other shopping try Loudeac or Lamballe nearby, or have a day out in Vannes, Rennes or Dinan.

Allow 40 minutes by car for the beaches to the north, and an hour or so for the beaches to the south. Both coasts have many interesting and varied features, so you can choose wild rocks, yacht basins, traditional seaside resorts, fishing villages, children's activities, huge flat beaches, little coves, nature reserves. In the region there are also several large lakes (e.g. Guerledan, Jugon) with sailing, waterskiing, kayakking and fishing.


Although all of life's basics are available in the village, you will need transport to make the most of the region. The nearest port is St Malo (1 hour 30 mins by car to the house). There are Ryanair flights to Dinard (1 hour) from Bristol, the Midlands and Stansted. Cars are for hire at the airport. You can also get there by train to Lamballe (20 mins) via Paris (allow about 7 hours from London). Brittany Ferries discount available.


Lovely old towns at Moncontour (10km), Guingamp (48km), St Malo (98km), Dinan (55km), Quintin (23km).

Nearest markets and good shopping at Loudeac (12km) and Lamballe (25km). Seaside resorts at Erquy (42km), Pleneuf-Val-Andre (36km). Wild coast at Hillion (26km) and Frehel (46km). Hypermarkets at Langueux (26km). Lovely countryside on the doorstep.

The region tends to be closed Sunday pm, Mondays, and 12 noon - 2pm, depending on the season. Butcher, baker, chemist, florist, post office, supermarket, a few minute's walk from the house. Supermarket sells everything - take your own bag. Bank with cashpoint, next door-but-one. Plouguenast does not have a 'cafe culture', but there are restaurants in the village - Auberge du Lie, Restaurant Eden, Creperie le Sarazin: four-course fixed-menu workers' lunches for around 12 euros on weekdays. Evening service at weekends subject to variation at short notice. Prepared dishes to take home from the butcher, supermarket and Auberge du Lie. Three bars, one of which serves snacks. Pizzas and mobile fishmonger on Fridays at noon.

Booking Notes:
Returning guests pay last year's prices. For all guests, £50 secures your dates; the balance to be paid at least three weeks before your trip. There is a deposit of £100 to be paid by cheque before you arrive at the house, which will be used is in case of damage or extra cleaning. Some small 'wear and tear' is inevitable and will not be charged. The linens charge is per bed and includes towels per person. This reflects the charging policy of the people who do the laundry.

Changeover Day:
For good fares, arrive mid-week. But you suggest dates and we'll see what can be done.

Notes on prices:
For linens, please add £20 per bed, or bring your own. Prices are for the house per night in UK pounds. Returning guests pay last year's prices. Reductions available for longer stays and if you can arrive/leave on a weekday (for at least a week's stay). I'd welcome offers for last-minute bookings.

Please contact me directly to secure your booking. I do not honour a booking that has not been discussed with me first.

Please pay three weeks before your holiday. A deposit of £50 secures your dates, and will be returned if you contact me to cancel.

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 7 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.

  • Notes on accommodation: There is a small cliff in the garden, rising to roof level. There is a sunny terrace between the house and the cliff at first floor level, which you reach from the landing door. There are steps down from the terrace to the back door of the cellar. Steps (with handrail) go up the cliff to the garden, which can not be seen from the house. It has excellent views across the rooftops. Guests are asked not to smoke inside the house. Outside: Behind the house, at first floor level, is a secluded terrace with table and chairs and a bench. There are sunny and shady areas on the terrace. There are two barbecues, one small one and a larger 'kettle' type. The garden was a rough field until 2006, and is now maturing well - there are flower beds, shrubs and a spacious lawn. There is a rabbit warren under the hedge, so look out for the rabbits in the evening. On some maps and photos you will see a pond opposite the house. This pond was a dammed stream and the dam broke in 2009. The area around the stream has now been landscaped and a new garden planted. Utility Room: Sink unit, washing machine, washing line in the garden. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen and towels provided for £20 per bed (or bring your own). Please use the washing machine if you need further linen. The caretaker nearby, if you need help. Other: Cellar.
