A rustic and charming property, 'La Grange' and 'Le Pigeonnier' have a private pool, sunny terraces and a secure, secluded garden with a tall hedge. Wake up to the glorious views across the Val de Dronne from the 'Sleigh Bed' room, or any of the other 5 bedrooms in the property. Enjoy gentle strolls or cycle rides in the quiet lanes. For the more adventurous, hire a canoe - explore the scenic water route to Brantome. Our information pack will provide full details. English satellite TV and a good selection of films and music will provide entertainment when required. For evenings out, no-one could resist the local cuisine. Garden bench under shaded apple tree. Sun Loungers. BBQs. Utility Room: Washing machine, sink, small fridge, pool towels, lounger cushions and pool equipment. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen, towels and pool towels are provided free of charge. Lovely rural position.

Taking the whole property made it ideal location for large family holiday with four small children happily contained within secure garden. We had a great time in the pool and enjoyed cycling on the quiet roads and tracks. We would like to go back when the grandchildren are a bit older as there are lots of places to explore and canoeing on the river sounds wonderful. We found the welcome booklet for the property very helpful, with lots of suggestions for local markets, places to visit and general information for the area.

Shabby, unkempt, not fit for rental

We have just spent a week at La Grange and Le Pigeonnier - there were 10 of us.

La Grange

The entrance to La Grange was through a very uninviting utility room, which for most of the week smelt of the septic tank.

The lounge and kitchen were adequately sized but shabby.

The ground floor shower did not drain properly.

Le Pigeonnier

The entrance to Le Pigeonnier via La Grange (accessible only as we had booked both) was via a new staircase which had not been finished properly from the utility room (uninviting and smelly)

Had we booked Le Pigeonnier on its own, access was via a filthy external staircase to a balcony door - balcony also filthy and unswept.

Access to the garden/patio and pool was not direct from the accommodation but down the entrance steps and via an external gate on the outside on the property.

Internally, this was also shabby. New steps from first floor to second floor unfinished and uncovered/unvarnished.

Second floor bathroom had shower attached to taps only with water pressure so poor it was unusable. If we had not had access to La Grange, we would have had no proper shower/bath facilities. There was no toilet in bathroom - this was on the first floor (ie floor below) with no sink to wash hands in - had to use kitchen sink or go upstairs to bathroom - not acceptable.

Second bedroom had no wardrobe.

No fans provided for bedrooms (on second floor at top of property and very hot).


Unswept - covered in dead leaves and covered in moss and in need of a jet wash to clean up.


No way to lock gate which accessed garden / patio - seemed to be broken. With 6 children in the garden / patio this is unacceptable.

Rude and unfriendly neighbours - could this be due to previous guests?

Inadequate area by pool for 10 people and insufficient loungers - only 4 for a party of 10.

Outside render faded, off white and covered in moss. Nothing like the photos.

We were advised that the local cleaning team would contact us during our visit but had no contact from them. We wonder why.

We are experienced villa renters and this is by far the worse property that we have ever rented. We consider this an unacceptable property for Owners Direct to be advertising for rental with the current spec and photos.

Our holiday was spoilt by what we considered very poor accommodation and would like a refund to compensate. We await your response.

Owner's Response: Our property is in the depths of beautiful, rural Dordogne. It’s a rustic house and pigeonnier surrounded by farms and local woodland. We usually receive great appreciation for our property, the surrounding countryside and villages, local activities and friendly neighbours. We are keen to help our guests enjoy their time at La Germanie and want to assist quickly should there be any reasonable requests to enhance their visit. Surprisingly, this review is the first time that we have heard that there were any problems with this guest’s stay at La Germanie. We are shocked at their comments and disappointed that they deliberately kept us unaware. We would have promptly discussed and addressed any issues. Unfortunately, this guest gave us no opportunity to help. The extended family of 12 – with 4 children under 5, who stayed for two weeks before this guest thoroughly enjoyed their visit and had nothing but good comments to make about the accommodation, the area, the pool and the neighbours. As a consequence they felt they made a good choice. Prior to this guest’s visit, we emailed contact details of the Manager of our local changeover team to call should they experience any difficulties. Our Welcome Binder in the house also gives contact details. We have spoken with our changeover team about contacting the guest after their arrival at La Germanie. A message was left asking if everything was okay and to call them back. Unfortunately, they didn't hear from the guest. Had they heard from them a visit would have been arranged ASAP and solutions would have been put into place. Subsequently, we have checked the following 1. Utility room. Smell rectified. 2. Shower. Slow drainage. Rectified. 3. Utility room. Staircase is finished with a clear varnish. 4. Fans are available in the utility room. 5. Garden. Swept on a regular basis. 6. Gates can be locked. 7. 12 chairs and 5 loungers available.

An Idyllic Retreat....

One of my friends hosted a family reunion at La Germanie and she, her husband, children and grandchildren all had a wonderful time. I have wanted to visit La Germanie ever since hearing about their vacation there.

My stay at the end of May was all I had hoped it would be. The property is charming inside and out. It is secluded and peaceful, yet a short drive away are the beautiful towns of Bourdeilles, Brantome (my favorite), St. Just and Verteillac with markets, adorable restaurants, shops etc. The people we met everywhere were friendly and helpful......and the owners of the property were attentive and knowledgeable. I loved every moment of my stay.

Thanks for a great holiday

We had a wonderful holiday. Thank you for your assistance in making arrangements. We loved the beautiful house which we found well maintained, very clean and well furnished, spacious and comfortable.

We enjoyed the huge family kitchen, lounge and snug and the bedrooms were very comfortable and clean. There was a good choice of books, games, dvds etc for use .

It was great to have the lovely pool with lots of garden areas to relax and entertain. There were lots of walks and lots of places to visit. Your browser with details of the areas to visit and things to do was most helpful and we visited Brantoine, Boudelles, Vereillac and Perigueux to name a few. Lots of activities for children. The house is very suited for families and groups of friends..............Hope to visit again.

A Peaceful Getaway

I spent 10 days in this lovely villa with two of my friends and I couldn't have had a better introduction to the Dordogne and to France. The villa has loads of charm, set in the middle of rolling countryside and leafy lanes. It provided us with a very comfortable 10 day stay. The interior is full of character and the accommodation suited us perfectly. The well equipped kitchen was an ideal place to enjoy evening meals around an enormous farmhouse-style table. The mature garden has lots of shady places to sit and have a quiet read or an al fresco meal and the quite large swimming pool was extremely clean. A car is necessary and we visited many of the quaint surrounding villages during our stay and also a number of the markets. La Germanie is certainly an ideal place to enjoy peace and tranquillity, away from the hub and demands of city life. We were very satisfied with the facilities it offered us and I would have no hesitation in returning there some time in the future.

Very disappointed with this property.

The listing description was accurate regarding the location, layout, facilities but the photos portray a much better quality than what we experienced so I guess the materials were new and everything was clean when the photos were taken.

The property was far from being clean and in our opinion very poorly maintained. Examples include:

a) Residue (sticky) stains on the bedroom and bathroom floors.

b) Bath absolutely ditched in scum (as was sink) and contained many spurious short hairs. Also in bathroom, many dead bugs in the drawers of bathroom unit and wooden trim hanging down from ceiling with exposed nails.

c) Thick cobwebs everywhere particularly on the curtains in bedroom.

d) Bed sheets, towels and pillows stained. One pillow appeared to be stained with blood. Bed frame was also broken.

e) Kitchen utensils very dirty as was glassware.

f) Within the tumble dryer there was some sort of material that was covered in mold growths.

We have never rented a property directly with an owner before but in our opinion the owners have not provided anything like good customer service or customer care. Again in our opinion the property was not fit for purpose. We spent most of the following day cleaning the property and purchasing new bed linen.

I certainly would not recommend this property to anyone.

The comments above particularly refer to the ‘Le Pigeonnier' but in our opinion the Grange did not fair much better.

Owner's Response: In the 7 years that we have provided an opportunity to experience our picturesque barn and Pigeonnier, in the depths of rural France, we have received an abundance of positive feedback. There has been high praise for our care and attention and we usually go beyond a regular service to make our customer’s stay a personal and enjoyable experience. By encouraging contact from the very first moment of enquiry, to the point of departure, we are able to ascertain our customer’s needs early and provide particular items or services to make their stay more enjoyable. Our terms of letting, in our Booking Form and Letting Agreement, requires notification (by phone or email) of any points of concern within 24 hours of arrival, providing us an opportunity for immediate rectification. Unfortunately, they did not contact us until 3 days. We were more than happy to respond and we requested that our agents visit to attend to any concerns whilst cleaning the swimming pool partway through their stay. What is most disappointing is that a perfect opportunity was offered to discuss matters and enable a positive response to the points outlined in this review. They chose not to take it. We also contacted ‘Disappointed’ 5 days into their stay, and asked again if there was anything we could do to enable their visit to be more enjoyable. They said, “No, nothing, we have cleaned everywhere”. It is hard to help in these circumstances. We do not have a tumble dryer and we were not informed about a broken bed frame. We can only assume they had their reasons for not inviting our agents into the property and in effect providing us, the owners, with a chance to rectify any areas of concern.
