Devon Cottage with Pool. Nr coast & Exeter. Village location with great pub.

Overview

Property

Updated: 08-Dec-2016
Two bedroom cottage for 2-4 guests with membership to leisure club with pool

**Brand New Wood Burning Stove Installed!**

Downhams House is a cosy two bedroom cottage. It is located in the centre of the peaceful village of Woodbury Salterton, complete with thatched cottages & traditional country pub & only 20mins drive to the sea. The cottage has all mod cons including 42' flatscreen TV, Blu-Ray DVD player, iPod dock & WiFi broadband. It is the perfect place to stay at any time of the year, whether you are looking for a family holiday, a golfing break with friends or a romantic winter break . There is a private south facing garden with large patio and lawn, perfect for alfresco lunches & BBQ or an afternoon snooze in the sun!

Guests at the cottage also benefit from complimentary membership of the private leisure club at Woodbury Park Hotel & Golf Club which is located just 2 miles away. Here you can unwind with a swim in the indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna followed by lunch in the Conservatory. Or, if you are feeling energetic, take advantage of the wide range of facilities - tennis & squash courts, gym and fitness studio. 18 hole championship course, 9 hole course and driving range also available (charges apply). As a member you can enjoy a 10% discount on beauty treatments in the Spa, in the hair salon and in the restaurants there.

Garden Equipment: The garden has a large patio area with picnic bench and parasol. This is a great place for enjoying a barbecue (Weber charcoal kettle barbecue available). There is also a lawn and two steamers to enjoy a spot of sunbathing.

Kitchen: The kitchen is well equipped and includes a cafetiere, filled salt and pepper grinders and cooking oil.

Tea towels, dishcloths, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, washing tabs sufficient for one load, oven glove and basic cleaning materials are all included.

Food, Glorious Food!: In Devon we are spoilt for choice with the amount of locally produced fresh produce and artisan food products. We have 3 excellent farm shops each within a short drive of the cottage. Kenniford farm is only a mile or so up the lane and sells their own outdoor reared pork and sausages as well as bread, milk, eggs and local goodies. Dart's Farm shopping centre in Topsham is a foodie haven with their home-grown produce, local meat, fish and cider as well as a cafe and gift shops. Greendale Farm shop near Crealy has a great butcher, fresh fish, deli counter and cafe and takeaway fish and chips.

In season you can pick your own at Four Elms fruit farm near Sidmouth or at Dart's Farm.

Cream teas are especially good at Otterton Mill & Old Bakery in Branscombe.

About the Owner

We relocated to East Devon 15 years ago and Downhams House is our way of being able to share this wonderful unspoilt corner of Devon with others looking to find a bit of peace and quiet not too far off the beaten track (we live just 10mins away). We hope you will think of it as your very own 'home from home' and come and enjoy a slice of friendly village life in the country.

A cosy country cottage that is so homely that we never want to leave! Maintained to a very high standard & beautifully clean. Everything that you need is provided & more. The diggers rest pub next door serves great food & offers a warm welcome. Thank you!

All round delightful cottage. Would book again

  • 5 of 5

Downhams House is a delightful cottage. Beautifully decorated, maintained and equipped. You are provided with a small selection of starter items and toiletries. These are all higher end brands and we're much appreciated. I was even left a little birthday cake as I arrived on my birthday. We often stay in Rural Retreats properties and this cottage was just as good at a much lower price tag. Don't be put off by theThe Diggers' Rest pub being a mere 10m away (i.e. Next door). We didn't hear any noise and, in fact, ate there twice during our 3 night stay. It's in the Good Pub Guide and the food is definitely a cut above. The cottage is right on the road but again we didn't hear any noise. This is a very quiet and peaceful cottage and ideally situated to explore a most beautiful part of Devon. Thank you very much , Sarah Rushton, for sharing it!

Beautiful modern cottage in picturesque village

  • 5 of 5

Excellent accommodation. Comfortable living area, smart well equipped kitchen and plenty of space to move around. Lots of nice small touches like books and up to date dvd's to look at, along with toys and books for children, made it feel warm and homely.

Owners very prompt in dealing with any difficulties and couldn't do enough to help our stay go well. Pleasant neighbours too.

The pub next door was great and very accommodating in allowing us to order food and bring it back to the cottage to eat (we had a 4 month old baby in bed). There was no noise from the pub and the food was delicious.

Another enjoyable stay at Downhams. Only 3 nights unfortunately but weather was kind. Easy drive to coast or inland to Dartmoor, Exeter and M5. Always spotless and comfy beds. Would definitely stay here again.

Lovely comfortable cottage in beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Downhams House. The property was very comfortable,  very well equipped and beautifully decorated.  We enjoyed days out in Beer, Budleigh Salterton and a boat trip from Exmouth, had a very tasty meal at the Diggers Rest and liked being able to pop to the leisure club for a swim before returning to the comfort of the cottage with it's lovely garden, after our days out. Thankyou,  we had a great holiday!

Location

From the Owner

We acquired Downhams House as staff accommodation when we owned The Digger's Rest next door. We sold the pub a while ago but we couldn't bear to part with the lovely Downhams House and thought it would make a great holiday home. Everyone comments on the cosy feel of the house and we feel it is in the perfect location for a country break anytime of the year as this corner of Devon is far less seasonal than other harder to reach parts. Yet we still benefit from easy access to the fabulous Jurassic Coast, Exeter and both Dartmoor and Exmoor. It really is an excellent base whatever your interests.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Exeter at 4 Miles Nearest Barpub : The Digger's Rest at 10 Metres Nearest Ferry : Plymouth at 48 Miles Nearest Golf : Woodbury Park Golf & Country Club at 2 Miles Nearest Train : Topsham at 4 Miles Nearest Motorway : M5 Junction 30 at 4 Miles Nearest Restaurant : The Digger's Rest at 10 Metres Nearest Beach : Exmouth at 7 Miles Car: recommended

Being just 10 mins from J30 on the M5, Downhams House is very accessible and provides a great base from which to explore the whole of Devon. It is also only a short drive from Westpoint so a handy base for exhibitors or visitors and popular with visitors to Exeter University.

East Devon is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty bordered by the World Heritage Site Jurassic Coastline and offers plenty to do for all ages. The sea is just 20min drive away - enjoy sandy beaches at Exmouth, Regency splendour at Sidmouth, mackerel fishing at Beer or fossil hunting at Lyme Regis. Walking is excellent - choose from the wilds of Dartmoor and Exmoor, the breathtaking SW coastal path or country walks right from the door step. Historic houses & gardens are plentiful, including the National Trust's Killerton, Knightshayes and Castle Drogo. For family fun: Crealy Adventure Park, Bicton Park, Pecorama gardens and model railway, South Devon steam railway and Beer Quarry. There are 3 excellent farm shops within 3 miles and the historic cathedral city of Exeter is just 8 miles away. And don't miss out on a real Devon Cream Tea!

Other Activities: Canoeing, kayaking, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, rock climbing, archery

Golf: If you want to play golf in fantastic surroundings, look no further than golf club at Woodbury Park in Devon just 2 miles away. Even if you don’t play your best golf, the scenery alone in Devon is worth the walk, with manicured greens and an abundance of wildlife - this really is golf at it best. Golfers without a handicap can pay and play the 9 hole Acorns Course or if you want an even bigger challenge, play the18 hole Championship Course. Learn the game on the driving range, or brush up your technique with a golf lesson from the teaching pro.

Situated on the cliff top above Budleigh Salterton, at the western end of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, the East Devon Golf Club commands magnificent views along the coast. At 6231 yards, it is not a long course, but offers a fair and interesting test of golf that requires accurate shot-making in order to score well. The fairways have been cut through a profusion of heather and gorse and, according to Peter Alliss, the 16th tee provides ‘the best view in golf’ 18 hole course at Exeter.

Facilities

From the Owner

We think its location is what makes Downhams House so popular. We love that it is so close to the sea and Exeter and that the M5 makes it so accessible. Tucked away in this quiet but thriving village you can enjoy a slice of quintessential country life complete with chocolate box thatched pub. Rather than being a 'grockle' surrounded by other holidaymakers on a complex, you will be able to enjoy the feeling of living like a local in no time! We have equipped the cottage to feel like a real home from home with the added benefit of membership to Woodbury Park Leisure Club. Here you can enjoy a swim in the full sized spacious pool complete with sauna and jacuzzi, keep up (or start!) your fitness routine in the gym or fitness studio or simply relax in the spa where they offer the full range of pampering treatments. We think it offers the perfect balance of great facilities with the benefit of the privacy from having your own home and all at a reasonable price.

Notes:

  • Downhams House is a great place for family holidays with a private lawned garden with large patio area and plenty of space downstairs for playing with games and toys. There is also a utility room providing extra space to store buggies, wellies and coats. However, parents with toddlers and young children might wish to be aware that part of the staircase is open to the hall (to enable us to get furniture up and down stairs) and might present a hazard if children left unattended. Also the garden slopes upwards away from the house so the edge of the patio directly outside the kitchen window is raised and there is a 2' step down at this point. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch for further clarification. Please bring your own cot linen if required. Guests with limited mobility may wish to be aware that there is no hand rail fitted to the stairs. Please don't hesitate to contact me to discuss your particular requirements.
