Traditional Asturian Finca / Tranquil Mountain Location near Trevias

Updated: 11-Sep-2016
Escape the stresses of modern life in this charming unspoilt rural hide away.

Set in the astonishingly green and luscious Asturian countryside, the finca provides an increasingly rare opportunity to experience unspoilt rural Spain. It is an Ideal place for the independent-minded traveller. This is a cosy retreat offering a chance to relax, unwind and recharge. It is perfect for those wishing for a haven from the fast paced modern world, or equally adventurous types who are keen to further explore the sorrounding Asturian landscape. The finca commands spectacular views out across an exquisite valley, a small stream runs along the gorge. This is a traditional Asturian country finca, which we fell in love with, our aim has been to maintain the integrity and character of the house, whilst providing a comfortable and homely place to stay in. The accommodation is all on one level directly accessed from the drive. The centre of the finca is a pleasant family kitchen with small utility room, from which wooden stairs lead to a storage loft space upstairs. There is a cosy sitting room, one double bedroom and a modern bathroom with shower and wc. As well as a conventional gas cooker, the house has a traditional wood fire cooker (Hergom). With no TV or Wifi it is an ideal place to retreat from the stresses of modern life, and unwind. This is a place to relax and enjoy how life used to be lived. A marvellous place for walkers, cyclists, ornithologists and those who love being sorrounded by nature.

Our house is looked after by the local farmer's wife, and it is their cattle which you will see grazing in the fields near the Finca. This is a region where people are used to eating locally produced food, and the meat from the herd is sold in the local butchers in Trevias.

This is very much a place for couples who enjoy their own company and wish to unwind and relax, so do bear in mind that it is an almost retreat location. We are proud to say that we have had two engagements during our lets, it is a very special place.

In an article in the New York Times from July 2015 Virginia Irurita,* described Asturias as follows:

" The northern part around the Asturias region is our best kept secret and where Spaniards vacation. Forget going to the beaches on the Mediterranean; the ones here are long with soft, white sand and beautiful, clean water. The area also has the Picos de Europa mountain range, spectacular scenery and amazing food, including mountain cheeses and all sorts of beef. Throw in the great prices, and it’s unbeatable."

About the Owner

I live with my husband, on the beautiful west coast of Scotland. I originally trained as a teacher and now works within the arts sector. I spent my formative years in Spain and speak Spanish fluently, so owning a house in Asturias enables me keep my Spanish up to speed.

Have really enjoyed staying in your mountain hideaway, it was close enough to the beach and the weather was mostly kind. Earl and Ellis, Amsterdam.

We are in the finca and it's better than the pictures, smells and sounds lovely out here. Thank you. Alison Sykora/Cowal Peninsula.

Thank you for renting out your lovely home to us for the week, we found it compact and wonderful-just the right size, looking forward to visiting again. Russell and Jane Perth W. Australia (Presently working in London).

Thank you for renting us your villa. We love the remote location and peaceful countryside. What a relaxing pace of life people live here! Ruth and Gordon/England.

We had a lovely stay here at 'El Bechegal' we felt like the only humans that existed-it was great! Alan/Lyn/Rowan and Carol/ Andalucia.

We had a lovely stay at El Bechegal. It suited us down to the ground, never had a mountain valley to ourselves before so it's something we'd like to repeat! Thank you. Matt and Esther St.

Brilliant wee find

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I found the Finca on owners direct and it looked perfect for us. When we arrived the drive up to the property is stunning and Frances had provided us with excellent directions, including photographs, which took us directly there. Our excitement at first viewing the house from across the valley then the drive along the track to it and finally getting inside was amazing. The house has bags of rustic charm, is peaceful, tranquil and had everything you need for a stay there. It was clean and tidy with a very comfortable bed and an unbelievable view from sitting on the toilet with the window open. No TV, no WiFi... Perfect, my wife and I lit the wood burning aga style cooker every night and thoroughly enjoyed cooking local food and drinking local wines. There is loads to do in the immediate area, we had gone for rest and relaxation only and were very fortunate with the weather, unfortunately the beautiful Spanish beaches are not dog friendly ruling them out for us but no reflection on the property.

The finca is very remote so be prepared for a 30-40 minute drive every time you leave, up and down mountainous roads with lots of hairpin bends and the track to the property is a track, my cars sports suspension coped with it being slow and careful. We loved the Finca and if ever we travel to the area again we shall definitely stay there.

Owner's Response: We love it when people ‘get’ what the finca is all about – no TV and no Wifi, we regard that as a bonus, it is a place where you can really leave the modern day stresses behind and get away from it all. I am so glad you lit the wood burning cooker, it does heat the house up quickly and gives a wonderful sense of cosiness and how life was once lived in the countryside. With regards to the Spanish policy with dogs on beaches, generally they are not allowed, understandably, because they are frequented by families with young children. However, on many of the beaches off the beaten track (and in Asturias, there are very few beaten tracks) you can always find places to wander along with your dog, as well as the acres of wide open countryside and the many harbour fronts. I am just so delighted that you had such a good holiday and would like to return. Thank you for your excellent review.

As beautiful a location as you could hope for.

  • 4 of 5

We were blessed with lovely weather which made the location all the more delightful. Directions provided were excellent and the house was clean and tidy when we arrived. It was not necessary to light the Aga and the cooker provided was fine. The bathroom is a delight with amazing views from the loo! The anticipated wild life kept pretty much out of sight but we did see nightjars and the occasional deer. Trevias, the nearest town, has a very good supermarket, bodega and butchers, together with several bars.

Owner's Response: It can be so stressful being given poor directions when going on holiday, so we take great care to issue very detailed instructions to the finca to ensure that our guests know exactly where they are going and how to get there. I am glad that you enjoyed the house and found that it met your expectations. Trevias is a wonderful little old fashioned town, which has everything you need, and how lovely that you enjoyed it so. The ingredients in Asturias are so good, and you can be sure of their provinance, this being a dairy and fruit growing region. I hope you tried the local vintners! Thank you for you review.

Remote finca

  • 3 of 5

This little finca was small but perfectly formed. It was not made clear quite how remote and isolated it was - best to check it out on google earth before committing.

It was comfortable but could have been cleaner. There were some rough notes left by previous visitors about the area, but nothing concise provided by the owner. There were gaps in provision of information/instruction about electrical issues, gas and refuse.

These matters aside, we enjoyed our stay very much - in fact it's remoteness was it's draw. The valley was stunning and ever changing according to the weather. A good place for complete peace and quiet. Take books and board games.

Many thanks for a good week.

Owner's Response: I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and found the finca setting stunning, it is a very lovely area. We do emphasise that it is an ideal spot to appreciate peace and tranquility and would especially suit the more independent minded traveler. Asturias is a land of great contrast, and we especially like the fact that although you feel you are in the middle of nowhere, the thriving little town of Trevias is only a 20 minute drive away. You will be glad to know that this year our manual is going to be overhauled, we have up till now, rather enjoyed the low tech information networking which has gone on through our visitors book, but appreciate that it is time to move with the times. Thank you for your very helpful review.

From the Owner

I fell in love with Asturias because it reminded me so much of the unspoilt Spain in which I grew up. It is an astoundingly beautiful country and we have found the Asturians to be warm and generous spirited people, rich in their traditions, and respectful of the natural world.

From the Owner

Tourism has barely reached the areas where we have our properties. The geological contrasts within the country are extraordinary too, as the land sweeps from the Picos de Europa mountain range down to quite wonderful bays, where you can still find yourself the only people on the beach.
