About the property

Fisherman's House in Luarca, Valdes, Asturias, Spain - Mountain Views,Central Location, Close to Historic Port And Beaches, only 35 Mins Drive From Airport

Architect owner, recently restored this former fisherman's house situated in the historic port town of Luarca, one of the stops on the ancient coastal Pilgrim Route to Santiago de Compostela. Commanding lovely views over Luarca and the beautiful countryside and mountains beyond, the house has accommodation on 4 levels including a modern bathroom and separate shower room, traditional timber balconies, and wooden floors and ceilings. Owing to the open-plan staircase which accesses all levels, the house is not suitable for young children, particularly under the age of 6.

Relax in the south-facing terrace garden with its own Orange and Lemon trees. This comfortable and pleasant house is an ideal base for the discerning holidaymaker to enjoy all that Asturias has to offer, providing an increasingly rare opportunity to experience a real sense of traditional Spain. The house is well equipped with maps and excellent guidebooks as well as a Spanish/English dictionary.

Fresh linen and towels are provided, but not beach towels, so please bring your own. All bedding is non-feather.

Luarca, historically a whaling port, is the capital of the Asturian region of Valdes. This characterful and attractive town provides an excellent variety of bars, cafes, and very good seafood restaurants, as well as banks and supermarkets and several pharmacies, which are all within walking distance from the house. You can access Wifi at the local library and also in the numerous bars and cafes.

There are two beaches within walking distance of the house and a harbour where you can watch the fishing boats unloading their catch at the local fish market or stroll along the harbour front and gaze at the yachts and watch the world go by.

The local tourist office in the main plaza will advise you on the numerous walks, cycle routes, museums and attractions in the surrounding area.

In an article in the New York Times from July 2015 Virginia Irurita* described Asturias as follows:

" The northern part around the Asturias region is our best kept secret and where Spaniards vacation. Forget going to the beaches on the Mediterranean; the ones here are long with soft, white sand and beautiful, clean water. The area also has the Picos de Europa mountain range, spectacular scenery and amazing food, including mountain cheeses and all sorts of beef. Throw in the great prices, and it’s unbeatable."

*(Founder and Co Owner of Made for Spain and named Top Traveler Specialist for Spain by Conde Nast Traveler magazine yearly since 2004, and named Best Travel Specialist for Spain and One of the World's Top Travel Agents by Travel+Leisure A-list yearly since 2009)

Please note that we let the house from weekend to weekend (arrival/departure on a Saturday or Sunday)

About The Owner

I live with my husband, on the beautiful west coast of Scotland. I originally trained as a teacher and now works within the arts sector. I spent my formative years in Spain and speak Spanish fluently, so owning a house in Asturias enables me keep my Spanish up to speed.

The Owner purchased this house in 2005

Why The Owner chose Valdes

I fell in love with Asturias because it reminded me so much of the unspoilt Spain in which I grew up. Tourism has barely reached the areas where we have our properties. It is an astoundingly beautiful country and we have found the Asturians to be warm and generous spirited people, rich in their traditions, and respectful of the natural world. The geological contrasts within Asturias are extraordinary, as the land sweeps from the Picos de Europa mountain range down to quite wonderful bays, where you can still find yourself the only people on the beach.

What makes this house unique

This is a comfortable house of character which has been sensitively restored, and the gardens elevated position, ensures wonderful views over Luarca.

Superb property and location

  • 5 of 5

It's a very atmospheric cottage, quite tall and thin. It was very clean and decently equipped. 2nd floor bathroom next to the two main bedrooms has a bath and shower, ground floor has a neat extra shower, both very good and powerful. The outside area is small but very nice with a great view over Luarca, we cooked and ate out there several times. The top bedroom has limited height, you can sit but not stand but it was no problem for our (quite tall) 14yr old daughter. The two bedrooms on the second floor are normal height. The property location couldn't be better, very close to the centre of Luarca but in a quiet location. There's a fair amount of traffic going up the small road from time to time but not an issue. It wouldn't suit people with mobility issues as access is up quite a steep hill and the property has lots of stairs. Luarca itself is not hugely commercial but lively particularly as we were luckily there for the San Timoteo festival which was amazing. Mostly Spanish people on holiday here. Communication from the owner was excellent. We missed going to the private Jardines de La Font Baxa as we left it to the last day and you have to book - worth going to the tourist office for this. We loved this house.

A great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

This is a super place to stay, well-equipped, clean and comfortable and having the pretty little garden to sit out in made it perfect for us. It is just a few minutes walk from the town and the beach up rather a steep hill and Luarca has everything you could wish for in a seaside town. This was our first holiday in Spain and we were very lucky to choose such a great place.

Traditional Simple Home in Authentic Spain

  • 4 of 5

The house is simple and full of character. It has 4 floors, although you need to be under 5ft to stand up in the attic bedroom. My 3 (under 5ft 4) daughters enjoyed it.

The house is a perfect distance from the town and you can easily pop in on foot to get your bread in the morning. If you explore a bit you' ll find the town provides all the good food you need (but don't get too excited about the Wednesday market except the roasted chickens and pork). We didn't eat out so I cant comment on that. Not many locals speak English which is a rare treat these days.

The best beaches are not in Luarca but close by, however you do need transport to get to them. The beaches were almost deserted when we were there in June. They have a lovely wild feeling with wooded high cliffs behind the crashing Atlantic waves. The vegetation is lush (more like Switzerland than Spain) due to the high rainfall in this area. Nevertheless, a delightful house and holiday. Thank you Frances!

4th Year at the Fisherman's House

  • 5 of 5

This was my 4th year there on the annual motorcycle holiday and the cottage was as marvellous as ever, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Try walking the unique encircling Roman Walls at Lugo or just meander down to Tineo or along the east coast towards Candas or west towards Foz for spectacular views. Luarca is well worth exploring in detail, with many fine eateries. Shopping for the cottage is easy with a wide choice available within walking distance, the steep hilltop walkways will keep you in trim!

Ideal holiday house

  • 5 of 5

This house is the perfect place to stay in Luarca. The property is located less than five minutes walk from the town and harbour where you can find a good selection of shops, restaurants & bars. The house is well equipped, comfortable and decorated to give it a nice seaside holiday feel. The little garden is a pleasant place to have your breakfast or relax in the shade of the lemon tree. Luarca and Asturias is very "Spanish" and there are few material concessions to tourists, however, people are very friendly & try hard to help, whether that seeing that you get the right dish in a restaurant or pointing out the way to get back on the walking trail. We would love to go back and are thinking about fitting in another week next year.

A couple of things to note; it is a bit tight for parking outside the house. We decided to park down in the town where there is ample free parking a few minutes walk away. The road or paths up from the town are quite steep. It's not a problem but be ready for it. If you learn a few words of Spanish it helps no end & the locals seem to appreciate it.

An excellent base from which to explore Asturias.

  • 4 of 5

This was an excellent base for us to tour Asturias and to enjoy the quaint fishing village of Luarca. The cottage was clean and well equipped and we enjoyed the proximity to a variety of good local bars and restaurants. The booking process was easy and Frances the owner was helpful and responded to any queries very quickly. All in all a very good choice.

Owner's Response: I am very happy that you found our house to be a very good base from which to discover the rest of Asturias, and that you enjoyed its proximity to the local bars and restaurants, which abound in Luarca. We strive to have the house well equipped so that our guest feel quickly at home, and can relax and enjoy their holiday. I hope you will visit us again.

Coast/Beach:

Minutes walk to Luarca port and to the local sandy beaches. These two beaches are safe swimming beaches with lifeguard attendance in July and August. There are also two surfing beaches very close to Luarca, Playa Cueva and Playa Otur, which are beautiful beaches. The Asturian coastline is populated with beaches and coves, and the visitor will be spoiled for choice. Sea fishing is a popular pastime in Asturias (licence can be obtained at a cost of 15 euros).

Travel:

( Easyjet from Stansted) Aviles (Oviedo) Airport Asturias is 35minutes drive to Luarca. Car hire is recommended, and although Luarca can be accessed by bus and train, this is a much longer journey from the airport than by car. For those travelling by car on the ferry Luarca is 2 hours and 45 mins drive from Santander (160 kms). (ferries, Plymouth, Portsmouth).

Gijon about 1 hour away, (ferries, Nantes to Gijon).

Distances:

Town centre is 5 minutes walk from the house. Luarca is 45 minutes drive from Galicia and the elegant Asturian capital city, Oviedo is 1 hours drive away.

Luarca has very good rail and bus links to the rest of Spain.

Further Details:

Hidden on the Asturian coast, Luarca is a quiet town of white houses which preserves all the charm and attraction of its seafaring tradition. Luarca is a charming and friendly town and has everything you would expect in a medium sized town, such as good local restaurants, supermarkets, bars, cafes, excellent bakeries, banks and a post office. It has 3 pharmacies and a modern health centre.

Built around an S-shaped cove sitting between sheer cliffs, the historic quarter of Luarca, its promenade and the port are all worth visiting. A small river divides the town in two, although several narrow bridges are there to unite it. Its most characteristic buildings are the lighthouse, the chapel of Atalaya and the cemetery overlooking the sea, cut from the rock by pickaxe and the final resting place of the remains of the Nobel laureate Severo Ochoa, a native of this town. Luarca's traditional character is reflected in its chigres -old Asturian taverns-, where visitors can learn the art of drinking cider.

The local tourism office can advise you on the numerous walks, cycle routes, museums and attractions in the surrounding area.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept responsibility for any loss, injury or accident, personal or otherwise, whilst staying at the house. We strongly recommend that you take out good quality travel insurance.
