Fisherman's House in Luarca, Valdes, Asturias, Spain - Mountain Views,Central Location, Close to Historic Port And Beaches, only 35 Mins Drive From Airport

Architect owner, recently restored this former fisherman's house situated in the historic port town of Luarca, one of the stops on the ancient coastal Pilgrim Route to Santiago de Compostela. Commanding lovely views over Luarca and the beautiful countryside and mountains beyond, the house has accommodation on 4 levels including a modern bathroom and separate shower room, traditional timber balconies, and wooden floors and ceilings. Owing to the open-plan staircase which accesses all levels, the house is not suitable for young children, particularly under the age of 6.

Relax in the south-facing terrace garden with its own Orange and Lemon trees. This comfortable and pleasant house is an ideal base for the discerning holidaymaker to enjoy all that Asturias has to offer, providing an increasingly rare opportunity to experience a real sense of traditional Spain. The house is well equipped with maps and excellent guidebooks as well as a Spanish/English dictionary.

Fresh linen and towels are provided, but not beach towels, so please bring your own. All bedding is non-feather.

Luarca, historically a whaling port, is the capital of the Asturian region of Valdes. This characterful and attractive town provides an excellent variety of bars, cafes, and very good seafood restaurants, as well as banks and supermarkets and several pharmacies, which are all within walking distance from the house. You can access Wifi at the local library and also in the numerous bars and cafes.

There are two beaches within walking distance of the house and a harbour where you can watch the fishing boats unloading their catch at the local fish market or stroll along the harbour front and gaze at the yachts and watch the world go by.

The local tourist office in the main plaza will advise you on the numerous walks, cycle routes, museums and attractions in the surrounding area.

In an article in the New York Times from July 2015 Virginia Irurita* described Asturias as follows:

" The northern part around the Asturias region is our best kept secret and where Spaniards vacation. Forget going to the beaches on the Mediterranean; the ones here are long with soft, white sand and beautiful, clean water. The area also has the Picos de Europa mountain range, spectacular scenery and amazing food, including mountain cheeses and all sorts of beef. Throw in the great prices, and it’s unbeatable."

About The Owner

I live with my husband, on the beautiful west coast of Scotland. I originally trained as a teacher and now works within the arts sector. I spent my formative years in Spain and speak Spanish fluently, so owning a house in Asturias enables me keep my Spanish up to speed.

The Owner purchased this house in 2005

Why The Owner chose Valdes

I fell in love with Asturias because it reminded me so much of the unspoilt Spain in which I grew up. Tourism has barely reached the areas where we have our properties. It is an astoundingly beautiful country and we have found the Asturians to be warm and generous spirited people, rich in their traditions, and respectful of the natural world. The geological contrasts within Asturias are extraordinary, as the land sweeps from the Picos de Europa mountain range down to quite wonderful bays, where you can still find yourself the only people on the beach.

What makes this house unique

This is a comfortable house of character which has been sensitively restored, and the gardens elevated position, ensures wonderful views over Luarca.

Notes on accommodation: This house is not suitable for children under the age of 6, owing to the open-plan staircase which accesses all levels. Although the loft bedroom has limited headroom, it has a sunny and spacious feel, and the Velux windows are fitted with blackout blinds. The house has full central heating. It is a non-smoking house. Note on Parking: Luarca is an old fashioned town with limited off-road parking, however, you can park across the street to the house, and there is a an additional parking area 100 metres further up the street. Outside: The private south facing terrace garden with its orange and lemon trees, commands fantastic views to the mountains above Luarca and a splendid view down into the historic town centre. It is equipped with a table and seating from which to enjoy the local ambience over a glass of wine or a morning coffee, or to dine outside, during the warm, summer evenings. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: We supply all bedding and towels. Please provide your own beach towels. We take great care to ensure our guest's satisfaction and the house and garden are well looked after. For 2 week stays, bedding and towels are changed at the end of the first week.

An excellent base from which to explore Asturias.

This was an excellent base for us to tour Asturias and to enjoy the quaint fishing village of Luarca. The cottage was clean and well equipped and we enjoyed the proximity to a variety of good local bars and restaurants. The booking process was easy and Frances the owner was helpful and responded to any queries very quickly.All in all a very good choice.

The house was lovely, clean and comfortable

It is located in a very nice village. We were able to reach many places with our bicycles and we have appreciated a lot the country all around.

Truly Spanish holiday!

We had a wonderful stay in Luarca. The drive up to the house was a little hair raising - especially in our large car! - but once you get used to the turns and the best places to park it is fine.

Luarca is a lovely town and we all enjoyed being able to walk down into town to the shops, restaurants and beaches. There was a fiesta while we were there which was great fun - marching bands, papier-mâché heads, bunting everywhere, boats and rockets! Being so close to the A8, Luarca is a good base to explore from and we enjoyed days out in Taramundi and the Senda del Osa.

The house is very well equipped, the beds are comfortable, the showers are great and the lounge and terrace are very relaxing places to spend time.

We have put a lot of effort into the house and it is a joy to know that people are enjoying it. Luarca is such a great and convenient place to stay in, because, as you found, everywhere is so accessible from the house. I loved that you enjoyed the fiesta of San Timoteo, it is such a wonderful spectacle. The Easter processions are also worth seeing, it takes place in the evening, and the whole town is involved. It is very, very moving. Perhaps you might return and witness that in the future?

Clean & comfortable. Not ideal for young children.

Luarca is a nice town and pleasant to walk around - it was nice to be immersed in Spanish culture and language. The house is well equipped, clean, easy to find and homely.

The house is not ideal for young children - the house has open stairs (fine for competent walkers), and some windows are (scarily!) easily accessible leading straight to outside and the roof.

The loft room has a mezzanine style floor with access to one bed next to the top of the stairs (we left a light on overnight to avoid slips).

Cars drive very fast past the house - and exceedingly close to the front door which can be a bit hairy.

Restaurants don't open until later in the evening - we found 8/9pm at the earliest which might be worth noting with little ones.

The nearby beaches are lovely - lifeguards, showers/toilets and easy to find and explore. We particularly enjoyed Otur about 10 minutes away.

Local conveniences are great - deli shops, cake shops (mmm!) and supermarkets which include Sunday opening times which is handy on holiday.

Check local festival dates as they are really popular in the town during the day and night. Especially San Timoteo.

Parking is fairly easy, although make sure you tuck right into the wall opposite the house and take out extra insurance if you have a hire car - we were knocked 4 times during our holiday both on the road and in car parks.

Overall a really lovely house and area, and one we would have enjoyed a lot more with older children. The scenery is beautiful and access via the A8 is easy for lots of places.

Please note that this is not meant to be a negative review at all - just hopefully some honest feedback for other young families.

As you say, the scenery in Asturias is very beautiful, the Asturians call it ‘virgin territory’ because it has been so unspoilt by tourism, I hope you will return here again. Lovely cottage in coastal fishing village

As a family of 4 we had a great stay in the cottage. The house was clean with tasteful furnishings and had everything we needed. The small terrace was perfect for meals outside with views towards the hills. We enjoyed walking down the steep lane to the village for shopping, coffees, beers and meals. A 10-15 minute walk takes you to the beaches (the furthest one is worth the walk). The lack of non-Spanish tourists made the whole stay an authentic experience. Highly recommended.

Charming house in a charming town

This charming and comfortable house worked out well for our family's trip to Asturias. The house is well decorated with comfortable furniture. The kitchen is well stocked and all appliances worked well. Overall, a very pleasant place to stay.
