About the property

3 bedrooms in well-equipped house within walk of local shops, mountain views

Our town house house in Rue de l'Eglise is perfectly positioned on the edge of the traditional village of Maureillas. It has sweeping views across fields and vineyards to the Pyrenees and is just around the corner from various bakeries, grocery shops, bars and restaurants. The house overlooks a calm, leafy church square.

Our town house is on 3 floors, with a sunny open-plan sitting room and dining/kitchen room combined, with French windows looking over a small balcony and the gorgeous view beyond. On the first floor there is a double room with a queen-sized bed, and a twin room with two single beds. There is a bathroom and shower, and separate WC. On the top floor is an attic room with a sofa bed and lots of space for playing or chilling out (ideal for children/teens!).

The house is fresh and modern, and beautifully equipped, but we have retained the old charm of the original Catalan building. It has excellent wifi and also French and British television channels. The kitchen has everything you need for a self-catering holiday (large fridge, microwave, coffee maker etc), and there are also a washing machine and tumble drier.

Maureillas is ideally situated to take advantage of all this exquisite region has to offer. Walking and hiking, mountain biking, swimming (either at the nearby lake or at the beautiful sandy beaches 30 minutes drive away), tennis, water sports, skiing and many other attractions are within easy reach. The nearest town, Ceret, boasts a renowned museum of modern art, a lively Saturday market and street festivals all year round. It is a mere 5km to the Spanish border, with Girona and Barcelona easily accessible by car or train. Local ski resorts are just 90 minutes away. Perfect for summer stays, and is also lovely in the autumn and winter.

Hi, I'm Penny and I live in the village of Maureillas, in the Languedoc Rousillon region of France, with my husband Dominic and 2 children. We moved permanently from the UK 11 years ago to follow our dream of living and working in this beautiful, unspoilt area of France.

We feel very privileged to live in this gorgeous area, and love to show our guests what a great place it is to visit.

PENNY O'KANE purchased this house in 2007

Why PENNY O'KANE chose Maureillas-las-Illas

This area of France is in a wonderful position between the mountains and the sea. It has over 300 days of sunshine per year, and still remains relatively unspoilt by tourism or over-development. It is easy to visit from the UK by air or train, and is also very close to Spain. We also love the fact that the traditional way of life remains unchanged - people have time to stop and chat, the weekly markets are full of local produce, and the seasons and festivals are recognised and celebrated.

Maureillas has a reputation locally for being the friendliest village in the region! We have certainly found the welcome here to be very warm, and we hope to extend it to our future guests.

What makes this house unique

The house is very close to the village centre, with all local shops within a short walk. It has gorgeous views across the Pyrenees, and overlooks a delightful leafy church square. It is ideal as a base for exploring all that this area has to offer, or for just chilling out! Our many repeat guests love the location, the well-equipped and comfortable house and the great variety of things to do in the beautiful Pyrenees Orientales.
