Beautiful And Historic Cottage (La Casina), Fantastic Views All Around

Updated: 16-Jul-2016
Cottage near Castiglion Fiorentino, Nr. Cortona, Tuscany - Quiet, Secluded Location, Close To All Amenities

La Casina was part of an ancient estate whose history goes back to Etruscan times. The views on the Val di Chio from your terrace to Castiglion Fiorentino on one side and Montecchio Castle on the other, are breathtaking - one of the best in Tuscany. La Casina is in a quiet and secluded location bounded by ancient woodland and surrounded by olive terraces. The grounds are extensive and border on National Park land. La Casina is stone built and full of character and would suit a couple or family with a young child (on sofa bed). Castiglion Fiorentino is our local town, 5 minutes drive away and has everything you may require, including a main-line railway station. The larger historic towns of Cortona in one direction and Arezzo in the other, are 15 and 25 minutes away respectively. The fresh-water pool, with Roman steps, is situated on a terrace adjacent to La Casina and has extensive views. There is always someone available for maintenance purposes and to give any advice and assistance.

We spent a wonderful week at this property. It is fantastic, so relaxing and peaceful, and the views from the pool are beautiful, typically Tuscan. The location is superb, just off the beaten track but within 2/3 mins of Castiglion and 15/20 from Cortona, 1 hour to Siena. The property and outside areas are excellent, very well equipped. Booking direct with the owner Barbara was really easy, and on arrival she was on hand to offer any advice that was needed. All in all a great place to go. Would I go back? .....tomorrow! The Smiths, Wigan.

This place is a find. We looked at many properties and locations for our vacation in Tuscany and are SO happy we chose this one! Practically perfect in every way! Amanda and Stuart, Penzance.

Thankyou Barbara for making our stay with you so memorable. Nothing was too much trouble and the property is superb. It must be one of the best in Tuscany, and we have stayed at quite a few! Dave and Joanne, Colchester.

Great little house with a beautiful pool.

  • 5 of 5

This little house has everything you need for a comfortable holiday. Good kitchen area with dishwasher. Washing machine available in adjacent building. Air con in the bedroom to ensure a good night's sleep. The pool is beautiful and we enjoyed some dips. The house is well situated for visiting the numerous interesting towns and villages in the surrounding area. It's an easy train trip to Florence.

Barbara is a great host. Helpful and friendly without being intrusive.

A view I could watch for ever!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fortnight's blessed peace and quiet in late September/early October 2015. The property is a generous size for 2 people with an L shaped kitchen/living area off which are a bathroom with lovely shower and at the opposite end of the living area is a more than adequate bedroom with shuttered windows facing south.

Kitchen facilities are good - we didn't want for any utensils and the dishwasher is highly efficient.

The best bit though is the view! As you sit in front of the property on the patio chairs you have a view south taking in the Val do Chiana. The Tuscan light changes regularly and the way it lights the hill town of Castiglion Fiorentino is magical. I took my book out many times to read and just ended up enjoying the panorama.

The weather was mixed while we were there but we still found plenty to do. Just above the property is a beautiful pool area and sun terrace surrounded by olive groves with the same stunning views. Below the property is a spacious and safe parking are. The grounds are beautifully planted and a very attractive environment.

John and Barbara who own the property were thoroughly amiable, on hand if needed, but never intrusive.

Locally there is so much to see and do. The whole area is a feast of history and art. If you prefer feasting of a different kind there are many good local restaurants and if you want to demonstrate your own culinary prowess there are 2 good well stocked supermarkets in Castiglion Fiorentino. Fancy something different? There are Italian cookery courses and even truffle hunting experiences available locally.

Time to start saving for the return trip!

Peaceful & Relaxing location

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with my husband for 10 days. We received a lovely welcome from the owner`s John & Barbara who showed us around. The cottage was spotlessly clean, had everything you needed, it was cosy and ideal for 2 people. It was exactly as stated in the description. The location is so peaceful and in the beautiful countryside. There is a fantastic pool with lovely views and it is surrounded by lavender and other lovely shrubs. John & Barbara were happy to give us advice and recommend places to eat and visit etc if we asked, nothing was too much trouble. We visited various bars and Restaurants including, La Terrazza Sulla Valle, Roggi, Antica Pieve (our favourite) and La Bottega Del Vino (lovely & friendly owner). We also drove to Arezzo, Cortona and Sienna ... absolutely stunning! We would certainly recommend this place to stay if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful holiday in a stunning location.

Activity and Interests

Being in eastern Tuscany, we are 2 hours drive to the sea, but Lake Trasimeno with its beaches, water sports, boat trips and historic towns and markets, is 30 minutes away by car or 20 minutes by train (Castiglione del Lago).

The nearest airport is Perugia (45-60 minutes drive). Ryanair flies there 3 times a week. Meridiana flies to Florence (1 hour drive). Ryanair and EasyJet have regular flights to Rome Ciampino (2 hours drive or train/bus), Pisa (2 hours drive or train), Bologna and others.

There are well stocked local shops which are open late, but there are supermarkets in Castiglion Fiorentino, 5 minutes drive away. The ancient and wonderful Cortona with its incredible views and typical Tuscan restaurants, and Arezzo with designer shops on one hand and medieval arts and Roman ampitheatre on the other, are 15 and 25 minutes away respectively. Siena is a 1 hour drive away and Florence is 1 hour by car or train. We are 20 minutes from the main north/south A1 autostrada.

Further Details:

Tuscany has very strict planning controls and protects its heritage. Its many historic towns and treasures must be experienced. The local markets are colorful and fantastic. There are banks and supermarkets in the local towns. The market in Castiglion is on a Friday. Arezzo has a famous monthly antique market (first Sunday of the month and preceding Saturday). The wine growing areas of Chianti to the North, and the area producing the Brunello and Vino Nobile (Montalcino and Montepulciano) to the South, can all be reached within 1 hour. Highly recommended. The owners will give you all details you require.
