We are an English couple-Angie & Den that live on the coast in Kent when we are in England, We have been round the globe a few times, but it was only when we came to Kovalam on holiday that we knew we had found our niche ,that was 21 years ago, then this property came up by chance 12 years ago,it needed a lot of things cosmetically done at the time, which over the years has been rectified ,we are now proud to offer the villa and cottage to our guests.
Between us we have 5 children & 9 grandchildren, the children are all grown up now, and have flown the nest.
Den before he retired was an electrical engineer ,and I worked in catering & a stewardess with P&O, so it has taught me great insite into what people want, and their needs.
We also enjoy meeting new people, and helping them with what ever they might expect out of their holiday.
Angie Harrison purchased this cottage in 2004
We bought this property mainly by chance,we loved the way it was set out, and the location, the cottage was a temporary building ,so we got building plans and turned it into a permanent building ,but still kept all the charms of India, it has 8 coconut trees in the grounds, a beautiful roof which we have converted into a garden & a covered area for all our guests to enjoy.
The benefits of staying with us are plenty, you can bird watch without moving anywhere, both properties have their own gardens with tropical potted flowers, gardens to sit out, read a book or just relax, its nice and quite ,and yet within 10 minutes you can reach all the shops, restaurants ,& beaches by walking,
The terraced roof is also a bonus , available for all the guests, to have many treatments, or just chill with a drink. You can join in yoga, have head massage, to many to mention ,you will have your own safe, flat screen T.V,- WI FI.-dvd player, very comfortable surroundings , just to make your holiday that bit special.
This is a tiny delightful cottage, snuggled away below the larger villa, magic for two people possibly too tiny for any more, but access to the roof terrace, created for relaxing, means that space and the sensory loveliness of India is moments away. While there are very many properties available in Kovalm the cottage and villa have a unique advantage..... warm, attentive and accommodating owners who from the very moment you make contact with them make you feel truly and genuinely welcome. Both properties have been made into comfortable well equipped places by Angie and Den who have managed to create a retreat that allows you to relax and quieten down from busy work life and yet close enough to the two main beaches so walking down the hill is a short easy stroll. This is a good place to base yourself and see Kerala and help is just an ask away.
It was my first trip to India and also as a solo traveler, Kuinny, Angie & Dens' manager, & Angie were waiting for me at the airport & we were quickly on our way to Kovlam. The cottage was charming just as it was described, spotlessly clean well equipped & roomy with no shortage of hot water & in a peaceful setting. There is T.V. & wi fi & I was invited to take yoga, massage & beauty treatment on Angies' fabulous roof. The beach is a short stroll away past the Curry Leaf restaurant where an enjoyable evening was spent eating & listening to a local group. there is a very good selection of restaurants on the beachfront all very inexpensive & I didn't have one bad mea,l to name a few Santana for cocktails & music, Sangavini excellent service & food & the beautiful Villa Maya superb. The Taj in Trivandrum serves an excellent lunch in cool relaxed surroundings. Angie & Den are perfect hosts & an absolute mine of information about the area & India itself there is so much to see & do. The Elephant Sanctury is a must & the wood carvers behind the Temple in Trivandrum are amazing the market there is something else! you can buy gorgeous garden umbrellas which they pack for you to bring home for about £12. Cochin is well worth a visit there's the chinese fishing nets , jew town, the museum & antique shops, mens short sleeved pure cotton shirts in an array of colours £2. A trip through the backwaters was so peaceful the fauna lovely & the glorious colours of a woodpecker so close. Kerala has something for everyone culture, beautiful beaches, after a day sightseeing or shopping what could be better than a long cool drink by the beach watching the sun go down. Would I go there again most definately, would I stay at Alarek Cottage again most definately it couldn't have been better trip.
This was our second visit to the cottage and Kovalam. The cottage was once more as we like... clean, basic and comfortable. The "supermarket" is only a short walk away and the kitchen is simple, for basic cooking. The beaches are only a short walk away with plenty of good restaurants. The beach at Lighthouse has the most restaurants, the Malabar and Kingfisher stand out. Around the corner at Samuda beach, the Third Rock is worth visiting and having a meal on the sea wall.
The manager, Kuinny is a godsend, the cottage is cleaned regularly and make use of Sanjay and his tuk-tuk.
Kuinny has details of all places to visit and he will take you there and back.
The elephant sanctuary is worth a visit, and the backwater two hour trip is a must. A full body massage at the nearby Ayurveda clinic was brilliant.
We recommend this for a relaxing and interesting holiday
