Fran and I bought our first French Property , Le Moulin de la Materette in December 1999. At the Moulin we run courses in Painting and Wood-turning, as well as rent out the Moulin and Grange for large extended family gatherings. We can accommodate 23 guests in the Moulin and Grange.
We bought our house in the mountains Maison St Brigitte in 2006, but have only recently completed the renovations to make it an ideal mountain retreat for walking holidays. We continue to live in and love the Ariege, an area of outstanding beauty. So much so that two of our children have settled and live in this area close by. Both our son & daughter have there own beautiful gites, that can be seen on www.materette.com
Both our children also have rental property see www.materette.com for details.
Nick Davidson purchased this house in 1999
We wanted a beautiful place to live in the foothills of the Pyrenees, that was close to water so we could develop a verdant garden and organic vegetables. We chose the Ariege because, having visited almost every corner of France, we felt the Ariege was genuinely French, spectacularly beautiful yet not overcrowded with tourists. It has everything to offer. Beautiful scenery, excellent facilities. full of history and close to golf, skiing and every other outdoor pursuit you could want. It is also a low cost part of France to live in, with lots of good inexpensive restaurants nearby. The ideal place for us to retire to. The Moulin also offered us the chance to entertain an expanding family and our friends from back in the UK. Our growing family has subsequently moved to work and live nearby and run their own gites.
There is every facility you could want at the Moulin, something for all ages to enjoy. From relaxing in a haven of tranquility in various parts of the grounds and on various decks, to canoeing up stream of the weir disturbing the odd heron or kingfisher.. Should you want to be active there are 10 bikes, a large heated pool, badminton & table tennis, for the less active croquet and boules, pool table, table-football a 10ft Chess & Draughts board. All the above yet being close to perhaps the most exquisite part of the Pyrenees. Close to Historic Foix, Mirepoix, and Cathar castles at Montsegur and elsewhere. If you are a keen golfer or horse rider there are 2 superb facilities nearby. Canoeing and white water rafting also available, plus some excellent river and lake fishing. Various adventure/theme parks.
'Much better than the web site portrays, we will be back'
'Best equipped house we have stayed in'
'Something for all ages, we'll be back to celebrate the next big family reunion.'
"Returning for our 8th time says it all, superb cuisine in superb surroundings"
I held a photography course at the Moulin with 13 people, and it was the perfect venue in every way. Nick and Fran, the owners, are superstars and the loveliest people you could ever meet. Nina the dog and Lily the cat only make the house more awesome a place to stay!
Nick and Fran were the highlight, they were so helpful and friendly and will do anything for you to have a perfect stay. They are excellent hosts and I wouldn't hesitate to return. In fact I'm thinking of excuses to go back! Their cooking is second to none, I'm surprised they don't have their own restaurant.
The house is gorgeous and the grounds are incredible. The garden is huge, with woodland, a river, weir, and wild swimming spot if you're brave! There's a lovely heated pool and the hot tub in the woods just tops it off.
The house is a short drive from spectacular mountain scenery and a beautiful mirror lake perfect for photos and picnics.
Situated almost out of sight of the road, beside a river and with a mill stream running beneath it, this ancient mill house is an idyllic spot in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The hosts, Nick and Fran had done everything to make our stay most comfortable and supremely enjoyable. Great swimming pool and a capacious and fully equipped kitchen, easily coping with our party of 14. Not least - no mosquitos. Highly recommended for a peaceful holiday.
