Combiers, on the Charente Dordogne border, near La Rochebeaucourt - Sleeps 2-5

Updated: 17-Oct-2016
Large 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom gite, with pool, great views, a real home from home

'Le Tilleuil, is one half of an 18th century farmhouse with its own terrace and parking and set in a large garden in the hamlet of Les Monneries. There is a pool with decking where you can relax, read or watch the sun go down. We are in the heart of beautiful forested countryside with gentle rolling hillsides on the edge of the Perigord Vert. It is a peaceful rural area with rivers and lakes for canoeing, boating and fishing. Visit the weekly markets in nearby towns and villages where you can meander and buy fresh produce and local specialities and then rest in a bar or café to sit and watch the world go by. For walkers, there are numerous quiet lanes, a nearby arboretum and woodlands with tracks. The local tourist offices have maps of the many signed walks and rambles through the lovely countryside. There is also a programme of activities for adults and children locally which are available to visitors.

About the Owner

We lived in Somerset before moving to France but have both moved about a lot with work and family. I think France is almost the longest we have lived in one house, over 11 years now. We both love the countryside, travelling, meeting people and days out at vide greniers/brocantes or local gardens.

Pene & Tony were so welcoming. The gite is comfortable and feels like home. Lots of good places to eat. Brantome market is worth a visit and the caves at Villar.

A home away from home...simply a perfect gem !

A wonderful week here in this beautiful, peaceful area with so much to see and do within an hours drive, it was perfect!!!

This beautiful gite is like a second home, everything here to make your stay relaxing, warm and very memorable. All the rooms are decorated wonderfully, the bedrooms with ensuite bathroom and the open plan kitchen/dining/living room is very comfortable and roomy.

We had our young son with us and there are plenty of places to visit and fun we all had near by; waterpark, canoeing, manmade beach at St Esteph,Cognac or take the bikes out around the roads locally. When it is warmer there is a pool next to the patio.........ideal for a hot day!

Shops are close by should you wish to buy food to cook, aswell as an oven and a microwave here, there is a bbq outside on the patio; but we ate out a fair bit as there are wonderful local restaurants in Brantome,Mareuil,Villebois-Lavalette and in various villages inbetween.

The hosts,Pene & Tony are warm and friendly with a great knowledge of the area and are available to assist in any way to ensure your stay is as relaxing as possible.

So.......this beautiful little country gite is ideal for small families or couples young and old.

We will highly recommend Le Tilleuil to anyone interested in visiting this area. We'll definitely be back again as we absolutely loved our visit, a great price too!

A little gem

  • 5 of 5

We were so impressed by this lovely gite. It was spotlessly clean, well equipped, comfortable and beautifully decorated and in a peaceful location. The owners, Pene and Tony were so friendly....but not at all intrusive and were willing to share their local knowledge which was very helpful as we had not visited this area before. There are some lovely places to visit and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Do visit the lovely little town of Brantome which has a market on Friday. Make sure you take your camera as there are many 'photographic opportunities'. We would not hesitate to recommend this gite to friends and family and hope to return there ourselves one day.

Pene and Tony were lovely hosts who were happy to answer our questions and inform us of the local sites. The cottage is well equipped, clean, with en suite bathrooms and a lovely pool set in wonderful countryside. Pene and Tony go out of their way to make sure that your stay is home from home.

We would definitely recommend this gite to others.

Thanks again

From the Owner

2016 is our ninth year renting our Gite. We bought our house in Spring 2002, did all the things they said you shouldn't and fell in love with the first house we saw, mainly because of the views and surrounding countryside. Here on the border of the Dordogne we have rolling hills, woods and mixed farmland, quaint villages and the best of both departments on our doorstep. We came here to live permanently three years later and have just finished renovating as much of the property as we intend to, now we are going to enjoy life and explore France a bit more. We both enjoy having a chat and a laugh over a glass of wine or good meal with friends old and new and in the summer months greeting our visitors from all over the world. We hope you will enjoy your time with us too in this lovely part of France.

What's On 2016

Festival Cognac Blues Passion 5-9 July 2016.... much of it held outdoors at various venues in the town... past big names include Robert Plant, Joan Baez, Tom Jones, Sting and Jamie Cullen and Lenny Kravitzr! Other music nights are held in village squares during the summer.

The Circuit Des Ramparts at Angouleme takes place from 16th-15th September 2016 - a chance to see old classic cars race around the boundary walls of Angouleme. There is a tour of the countryside on the Saturday with several stop offs in villages where you can get up close and talk to the owners of the cars.

There are lots of activities which take place from July to mid-August and are open to visitors to the area, all at an affordable price, e.g, canoeing, pottery, sub-aqua, painting, as well as historical tours of the chateau and town of Villebois-Lavalette. We can send you a copy of the programme when it is available.

Royan and the Atlantic coast are just under 2 hours away. There is a beach and lake with water sports and indoor/outdoor pools in Angouleme. There are two other lakes, which are very popular with our guests, at St Estephe and La Jimaye. Both have canoes, woodland walks, picnic area and cafe. There is also an outdoor pool at Pontaroux, ten minutes drive from us.

AIRPORTS - Limoges & Bergerac 1.5 hours, Bordeaux & La Rochelle 2 hours.

DRIVING - Calais 8 hours, other channel ports 6-6.5 hours

PARIS is a 5 hour drive or you can take a fast train for a day trip from Angouleme.

The picturesque river town of Brantome (the Venice of the Perigord) is about 20 kilometres distance, Angouleme 30k, Cognac, Perigeux, St Emilion, Bordeaux, Poitiers, Limoges, Bergerac all 1-2 hours away. If you are house hunting our gite is near one of the largest estate agents, Leggett Immobilier, at La Rochebeaucourt.

Further Details:

Also near is the small market town of Villebois-Lavalette which is one of the oldest covered markets in the country under which a small local market is held every Saturday morning, filled with fresh produce of every description and when the market has gone you can sit and have a drink or dinner served by the nearby restaurant 'Le Lavalette'. Villebois is dominated by a beautiful medieval chateau, with its turrets and a thousand years of history. The tourist office provide regular guided tours of the village.

Our nearest village is Mareuil where there is a good restaurant L'Olive Noire serving a la carte and pizzas. Le Rochefocauld has a beautiful chateau on the Charente river, Nontron and the villages in between are all worth a visit.

Angouleme is the capital of the Charente and the old town centre is built on a plateau which overlooks the Charente river. Narrow cobbled streets wind around the 19th century market and are full of atmosphere including the Mairie, old churches and the Cathedral. There are good restaurants including Italian, Indian and Chinese.

The renowned classic/vintage car rally the 'Circuits des Ramparts' is held in September each year in Angoulême. The racing of these old vehicles, as they scream around the ancient streets, reminds you of Monaco 50 years ago! Cognac where there are several brandy houses to visit is 1/2 hour East of Angoulême. Visit Bordeaux where Medieval and modern architecture sit side by side; the wonderful Bordeaux Law Courts designed by the British Architect Richard Rogers are located in the heart of the historic core of Bordeaux, near the medieval cathedral and form a backdrop to the imposing Neo-Classical Palais de Justice facing the Place de la République. The city has great restaurants and you can shop til you drop.

What variety we have, beautiful countryside, ancient towns, chateaux, history, sports, relaxation, good food, fine wine, a cosy farmhouse, so much to see and do.

Our gite is set in tranquil countryside. The type of holiday you want depends on you: make it quiet and laze round the pool; active - walk and cycle the lanes and tracks or play golf nearby, or swim at nearby lakes; explore further afield the towns, villages and historical gems in Charente and Dordogne, or visit the distilleries and domaines to sample the cognac and wines on offer. The small towns of Mareuil and Villebois-Lavalette are only a short drive away for shopping, with supermarkets, butchers, bakers and weekly markets. We are only 20 minutes from Brantome the Venice of the Perigord a must place to visit, as are Aubeterre and St. Emilion. You will find lots of info in the gite for you to plan your holiday.
