About the Owner

John and Christine Warwick. He is British, she is French/Italian. We both fell in love with Crete, the island, the weather, the locals and their Cretan hospitality. We had visited many other European Countries but never felt as comfortable and at ease as in this part of Western Crete. We had been looking for somewhere to buy and to share with our friends and extended family so when the opportunity arose we had no hesitation. We want our visitors to share the enjoyment we have experienced in this part of Crete and will endeavour to give you as much information as possible to ensure you a wonderful holiday.

Well, what can we say? We've just got back from one of the best holidays we've ever had! Our first visit to Crete was a wonderful experience, and over far too quickly. Your lovely Villa was superbly equipped, and the location was as breathtaking as you had described. Thank you both for making our holiday so special, and for all the help you gave us. McPherson family.

Amazing Villa - Amazing Views of Mountains and Coast

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks in Villa Petra in late September. The villa has the most amazing hilltop views. It is well furnished and has everything you'd possibly require on holiday. The pool is very clean - a bit cold in September but refreshing nonetheless. Outdoor space is excellent - BBQ and outdoor kitchen, sun beds for 6, outdoor dining area and lots of little sun traps.

The drive to the villa from the National road is lovely, passing through three villages which have shops, tavernas, etc. The last drive up the hill to the villa is rather hair-raising - but well worth the bumpy, twisting road over a few minutes to reach the top. Very private area with only 3 other villas nearby.

This is a beautiful part of Crete - near Chania and Rethymno as well as villages such as Kalyves and Almerida. Great base to visit all parts of western Crete.

We will definitely return and are very happy to recommend the villa to others.

Wonderful Villa with fantastic views.

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely holiday at the villa which was everything it promised to be. The views were sensational and the pool and outdoor kitchen were frequently used as we sat outdoors as the sun went down. The only difficulty we experienced was the track to the villa which we found our hire car could not cope with so it had to be left parked until we left. This may have been because it was a 6 seater. Local taxis would not come up to the villa so we walked up and down from the bottom of the track. However, neighbours with smaller cars were managing the hill so the best car to use may be worth checking this with the owners as the villa and its location are so fabulous and shouldn't be missed.

In Chania we went on a boat trip and snorkelling with Nicks Boat trips which was a fabulous day out and to be recommended.

The rating of 4 stars is simply because of the road and would have been a five.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your review. Glad to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay at Villa Petra. Yes the views really are wonderful, sea, vast countryside and mountains! In spring you will also see snow on the mountain tops whilst sunning yourself by the swimming pool. The choice of car is important in Crete, the minor roads are notoriously less than perfect! We will in future suggest guests book a car through our local car hire partner who has the experience and knowledge of local minor roads and they will be able to recommend cars to hire which are well suited for the terrain of country roads in Crete. Thank you again for booking your holiday with us and your helpful comments.

Absolutely Stunning

Our holiday was wonderful and relaxing. The villa was superb and the location and views amazing. Chaina was a beautiful traditional town with lots to see and do. We hired a car and travelled the island including visiting ruins and very old churches. Loved Crete!

We were pleased to have taken a taxi from the airport to the villa as we were unfamiliar with the route, (though we later found the instructions to be very accurate and helpful.) The steep climb to the villa from the Provarma road was daunting, not just to us - but the taxi driver too! (Taxi4Crete.gr) Kostas Kourgiantakis runs the family business, and the drivers are local, very friendly and knowledgeable. It cost us 50 Euro's each way from Chania airport.

As we were without transport that first day, we asked Christine if we could order some groceries to be delivered to the villa. Christine did this with pleasure, and we settled the bill with her afterwards. Our holiday began immediately we arrived with cold beers in the fridge. The villa is so comfortable, we soon relaxed.

The following morning, a car was delivered to the villa from Auto Club and from then on we were happily independent. Contact John Warwick who was very helpful about this. There is an Auto Club office in Kalyves, the local town with has a good supermarket for supplies and beautiful beaches, plentiful taverna's, cafe's and restaurants, lots of shops and really nice people. But our favourite supermarket was in Stylos. Small, not too expensive, and very personal. We enjoyed buying ice creams, and having coffee, or beer at the taverna next door. Stylos is about a 35 minute walk, downhill from the villa, and surprisingly, only a 38 minute walk back up!

Hire a car, brave the hills, this is a beautiful part of Crete, and very much worth exploring. When you return to the villa you will be welcomed by comfort, air conditioning, a lovely pool, amazing views, and will be disturbed only by the sound of the Cicadas and Owls.

We highly recommend this villa, the owners, car hire and maintenance team; it’s comfort and location.

A fantastic villa - we loved it!

  • 5 of 5

The house is in a wonderful peaceful location with stunning views. It was well equipped and comfortable. It was lovely to sit out on the roof balcony and listen to the birds and sheep. We enjoyed popping into Kalives and Ameradia for breakfast and provisions. The nearby tavernas were hospitatable and the food was beautifully flavoured and fresh. We were also impressed by the red wines which we tried. We enjoyed trips to Rethymion and Chania for more restaurants and lovely shopping. The coastline was lovely as was delightful as were the orange, lemon and olive groves. Thank you for a lovely stay. We would love to return!

Amazing views and peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

Wow, the views from this wonderful villa are totally amazing. The location is perfect for a peaceful and relaxing holiday, with only the tinkling of the sheep bells to disturb you.

The villa was extremely clean and well equipped with everything you needed for a self-catering break, but there are many good traditional tavernas nearby worth a try. Definitely try Provlita in Kalyves and Sterna tou Bloumosifi in Vamos. The food in local Stylos is very good too.

We hope to return to this little bit of Cretan paradise soon.

Communication with Christine was good throughout, answering any questions we had very quickly.

Precise google earth coordinates 35.418484,24.123226. I fell in love with the island the first time I came to visit and this triggered our desire to buy a property there. I am myself Italian and French & Crete reminded me of both Cote d'Azur & Toscana before these places were spoiled by overbuilding and mass tourism. Western Crete is considered the most traditional part of Crete. We are within easy reach from the wonderful old Venetian town of Chania as well as Rethymno with its Turkish legacy. The nearest beaches are only 10mins drive away. Our favourite because its so quiet & has lovely golden sand is located on the western side of Kalyves. When we desire a busier atmosphere and the commercial bars and tavernas we frequent the beaches in the Centre of Kalyves. Our local village of Stylos though is a must to visit & enjoy traditional Crete. Precise google earth coordinates 35.418484,24.123226

Further afield, a water park at Limnoupolis, the biggest karting track in Crete, opportunities for boat trips from the harbour at Chania and historical sights such as the World War 2 Allied and German cemeteries.

Facilities

From the Owner

We called our villa Petra because it is stone built. Unlike Plaka, Almerida or Kokkinorio, in this hill-top exclusive location there are only 4 properties including ours and they sit wide apart in their respective plot of land ranging from 1500 - 4000sq.m. In front of the property you have an uninterrupted view right to the bay of Souda. And from November to often until end of April, the mountains in the back offer a stunning view with its white snow caps. Should you be sun-bathing at Easter in one of the loungers in the swimming pool area, you would then have the privilege to admire in one glance the snow capped mountains to the rear and to the front the blue sea in the bay of Souda. WOW ! We just love the location. Its idyllic and exclusive, set in unspoilt countryside.
