Lovely 'home from home' four bedroom farmhouse in large, child friendly garden

Updated: 25-Oct-2016
Restored farmhouse 20 mins from near Honfleur, Eure, Normandy - Peaceful village location, 25 mins to great beaches, lots of beautiful gardens and chateaux nearby

Between Honfleur, Pont Audemer, Caen and Rouen, 'Bon Vivant' is located in a small, attractive village and within five minutes walk of a good range of shops including a superb boulangerie, boucherie, delicatessen, fine-dining restaurant, three small bars and a pizzeria.

The house is well equipped with TV (some English channels), stereo, games, swings, etc. This is an ideal location for a anyone wanting a quiet location but with many attractions nearby. These include, Honfleur, the Normandy Beaches, D-Day sites, Bayeaux, Rouen, Paris, Monet's Garden and many historic abbeys and places of interest.

Locally, there is a large lake at Pont L'Eveque (25 mins) where there is a little beach, swimming area, boat hire, fishing and pedalos.

Pont Audemer, locally heralded as the Venice of Normandy, is a lovely medieval town and only 15 mins from the house. There you'll find lots of local restaurants, as well as food shops, bars and a couple of supermarkets. A good spot for an afternoon beer and watch the world buzz around you.

Cerza Parc (Ouilly-du-Rouley - 25 mins) is a roomy zoo and a good day out, especially with kids. It has several different walking routes, as well as a cute train.

There are loads of lovely beaches nearby, including Deauville and Trouville (35 mins), Houlgate and Cabourg (both 40 mins).

There are lots of museums and galleries in the region including:

* the excellent Peace Museum (Caen)

* the maritime museum (Honfleur)

* the Museum of Art (Trouville)

* Maison Satie (Honfleur)

* Musee des Beaux Arts (Le Havre)

You can find swimming pools in Pont Audemer, Honfleur and Bretteville Sur Odon (near Caen) - which is also home to Festyland amusement park.

If you'd rather not drive to Paris, then it is only about an hour and a quarter by train from Bernay (25 mins).

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Probably the best rental we’ve had in Northern France due to great location, close to the coast, big garden for the kids to play in, not too far to go for ‘stuff’."Second visit, excellent two weeks. We've been 'doing' northern France for 20+ years, never found anywhere so relaxing".

"This is by far the best property we have rented in France. Brilliant house, location and view! Thanks so much".

"We returned on Saturday from two fabulous weeks at Bon Vivant. We were really taken with the house, especially the view of the church at night and we just loved the bakery with bread and cakes to die for!"

"We had a wonderful New Year break, and hope all that stay here enjoy their stay as much as we have. We hope to return very soon. Very cosy and warm".

"We found Normandy to be an excellent region for a holiday and we managed to pack in visits to Paris, Disney, Monet's Garden, Mont St Michel, D Day beaches, Bayeux and many trips to Villerville to sunbathe and swim".

Like coming home again - but better

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I are great wildlife lovers, and we really enjoyed sitting under the veranda with a glass of wine and watching the show from the swallows swooping, wagtails scuttling about. Loads of other birds being busy too like woodpeckers, tits and buntings in the apple trees. Before you know it the owl is hooting and the wine bottle is empty! It is so peaceful, and you really get to relax properly.

You still have the wifi, TV, DVD and other mod cons if you want. But this is complemented by the sheer charm of the place.

You are also so close to some good places for days out like Honfleur - which is always fantastic - gardens, chateaux and some lovely local eateries. No chain restaurants around there! Try Cambremer for the "Pot people", lovely! Monet's gardens are a nice day out too. Beuzeville is just 10 mins up the road with a few good places to eat and supermarket and other shops.

The owners couldn't have been more helpful, and the neighbours, shop owners were very friendly and chatty!

I speak virtually no french but get along with sign language and my O level basics that I can remember, everyone is really happy if you try and smile.

I would thoroughly recommend here for a seriously chilled out holiday but not that far away.

Lovely property, fabulous village, great setting

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed in August 2016 and it was our second visit. We first went in 2012 and the house was as lovely as we remembered. We like the new sofas and the new TV. The garden was gorgeous. On several days we didn’t go anywhere at all, just hung out in the house, popping to the local shops for bread and sausages for the barbie. We did go to Honfleur, Trouville, Houlgate, Les Jardins Pay d’Auge - great spot from which to explore. Felt like a home from home.

BON ? VIVANT Nice area, pleanty of space in the garden, but lacks maintenance

  • 2 of 5

I booked this property for my family to have a short break in as it looked like children and babies were catered for.

To be honest it was very much smaller than we anticipated, and the website actually state two bathrooms, which is not really correct, its a converted bathroom to a bedroom, which now has a shower( very small) and a toilet just outside the room.

Very award if someone is usiing that room,as they have to be disturbed while you have a shower, and lets face it,most families loike to get going in the morning and ourt fot the day.

It was also stated there was a highchair, this actually was a plastic seat with straps covered in old food on our arrival.

It should be noted the owner was advised there was a six month old baby in the party.

The swings caused me most anxiety it has to be said because of their condition, not actually fit for purpose, they was rust on the swinging joints and i constantly on edge when my grandson used them.( yes he was told ,but boys will be boys !)

Not that we as adults were too bothered, but we had no TV for the whole week,as ther was no signal getting to the sat receiver..

The Bar B Q had broken handles on the lid,and the sides, the ventilation port was totally rusted.

We all wondered at one point when the stair rail would fail whilst carrying a baby upstairs it was so rickety

So ,impressed No !

Would i go again No !

Owner's Response: "Thank you for your feedback, Mike. I’m glad that you liked the area and found the garden spacious. We do get lots of lovely feedback from families whose children enjoy the big, enclosed garden. Thank you for your feedback on the bathroom. The website did say "Upstairs: Bathroom with bath, shower, washbasin, WC. Downstairs: Separate WC. Shower in bedroom.” but I have taken your comments and board and amended the description. Thank you too for informing me about the swing set, television and BBQ. Now I know these are a problem, I have arranged for those to be sorted. We, of course, want our guests to arrange a full range of facilities. I’m glad we have had chance to correspond via email since your holiday, Mike, and that you found "Bon Vivant ideally placed for the local village, of which [you] enjoyed popping up, and sampling the local beer”. It really is a lovely village and I hope you discovered the fantastic bakers and butchers too!

Idyllic French Escape!

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed a wonderful stay at Bon Vivant, a charming Normandy house in an idyllic and tranquil country setting. The closeness of the village is a real bonus and we enjoyed getting our croissants fresh from the boulangerie every morning. We enjoyed watching and listening to all the birds that were around – especially in the evening with a glass of wine!

Many thanks for a memorable stay!

Great home for a family stay

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed this property. The house is fully equipped and is in a convenient location to travel to many of the popular sites in Normandy. The local village is very quiet. We had an excellent meal at the local hotel. I would recommend it.

From the Owner

We chose this gorgeous pocket of Normandy because we wanted somewhere we could easily escape to; an antidote to our busy working lives. Only 40 mins drive from Le Havre or three hours from Calais, its far enough to feel like we're really immersing ourselves in France, but its close enough to be within easy reach. We particularly love the rural, gentle feel of the region. It is relaxing (I literally feel my shoulders drop when I step out of the car), yet there's lots to keep visitors occupied. We've been visiting for over 12 years and still delight in finding something new to experience and somewhere new to eat every time we go.

From the Owner

The village has everything you could need, day to day - an absolutely fabulous boulangerie and butcher, two 'corner shops', several bars, a fine-dining restaurant and, recently, a pizza takeaway. All within five minutes walk! There are several large supermarkets within 11km and lots of wonderful cafes and restaurants to try. It's so nice to escape from the 'chain restaurants' we have in England, and eat real home-made, traditional Normandy food. Delicious! Everyone is so friendly, and children are always welcomed. We feel that the house offers a unique experience; you can relax with a glass of wine under the veranda and marvel at the peace, or hop into the car and visit beaches, museums, galleries, chateaux, beautiful gardens and the wonderful Honfleur, of course.
