Situated in the middle of the village of Grinton, opposite the very popular Bridge Inn and the beautiful St Andrews Church (known as 'the cathedral of the Dale') Corner House is a traditional stone house, combining features like beamed ceilings and multifuel stove, with all the comforts of modern living such as dishwasher and washing machine to make your stay as comfortable as possible. A stream behind the house runs down to the River Swale, about 200 yards away, giving opportunities for riverside walks along part of the Coast to Coast path. There are wonderful views from all the principal rooms and the countryside of Swaledale is right on your doorstep, with walks to suit ramblers and strollers alike. Within easy walking distance is Reeth, 'the Capital of the Dale', with its huge village green, surrounded by cafes, pubs, restaurants, craft and gift shops. Swaledale boasts several summer countryside shows, and the Swaledale Music Festival in May/June. Unlimited internet Wi-fi access available, without charge. About the Owner

We have lived, or had a home, in North Yorkshire since 1978, and have grown to love the Yorkshire Dales, especially Swaledale. We have led a nomadic life for many years, which is the nature of being in the RAF. Now, ‘retired’ and in our early 70s, we still have a nomadic lifestyle. In 1993, we purchased and restored a collection of old farm buildings at Le Haut Fresnay in Normandy. This is now our second home, where we spend several months of the year managing our 3 holiday cottages there. In 1996, we acquired Corner House in Grinton, to which we return each year to relax during the winter months. Grinton and Le Haut Fresnay are delightful places, each different, but both homes we love and cherish. We invite you to come and share our enjoyment of them. You will not find a warmer welcome!

We first stayed at Corner House around 10 years ago and have been back every year since and enjoyed every holiday. It is an ideal base for touring the Dales, walking or just relaxing. There is a lovely river walk to nearby Reeth, where there are many pubs and tea-rooms or a shorter route via the fields and a car journey only takes 5 minutes. We found Ivy Cottage Tea Rooms in Reeth one of the best. Alternatively The Bridge Inn is only over the road from Corner House and ideal for a cosy drink or a meal. We have stayed at Corner House in both Spring and Autumn and it is always very welcoming, warm and cosy especially on chilly evenings with the multi-fuel stove in the sitting room. It contains everything you will need for your holiday and someone is always on hand if you should need any help. (Robin & Yvonne May 2012)

A lovely,comfortable and well equipped property in an excellent location.

I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family and hope to return for another visit. The house is in a beautiful location overlooking the church with a good pub just across the road. All the information given was accurate, useful and thorough. The sitting room was very comfortable and cosy, the kitchen well equipped and both bedrooms spacious and beautifully presented. It was great to have a second cloakroom next to the main bathroom and a very sunny garden at the front of the property.

Swale dale is extremely beautiful and unspoilt and we loved exploring on foot, in the car and by using the Little White Bus. The range of local walks from Grinton and Reeth were excellent and we particularly enjoyed our walk around Kisdon taking in the villages of Muker, Thwaite and Keld. We would also recommend a trip to nearby Castle Bolton.

Overall a wonderful base to explore the Yorkshire Dales and Richmond.

The listing described the property accurately. The property was clean and well maintained and we would willingly recommend the property to a friend or relative. The gentle walk into Reeth, with its attractions, was enjoyable and gave you an appetite for the good food available at the pubs in Reeth and Grinton. All in all a good holiday!

Very comfortable and well equipped cottage

We had a lovely week in Corner House. A very warm welcome awaited us after the drive up from London. The wine was very much enjoyed. Corner House is incredibly well-equipped and had everything we needed for a very relaxing break. One of the best holiday homes we have stayed in. We had some very good meals at the friendly Bridge Inn, which is just across the road from the house. Beautiful walks in the area with lots of great Inns and pubs. The wild flowers were stunning with wild garlic abundant and therefore, used when dining in! We hope to return to Corner House for another relaxing break soon

May is a lovely month to spend a week or two in Corner House. Besides walking among the Spring flowers in the countryside, you can take advantage of the annual Swaledale Festival, which takes place during the last week of May and the first week of June. The award-winning Festival hosts many musical and other events in and around Grinton and the surrounding villages, and is a big draw for visitors to the Dale. There are other events taking place throughout the year, which we often publicise on our own website for Corner House. Last year, the big event was the Tour de France cycle race passing the front door of Corner House in July. This year, you could enjoy the Reeth Show, which will be taking place on August Bank Holiday Monday, and the exciting Fremington Fell Race that takes place on that day.

Our first stay in the Yorkshire Dales

We have just returned from our first holiday in the Yorkshire Dales staying at Corner House. We have fallen in love with the area and were very sad to leave. The cottage is comfortable and clean with everything a family could need (including wifi for teenagers that cannot survive without access to their social networks!), and is in an ideal situation for access to the Dales. It was lovely to be able to take our dog, a staffie cross, away with us and she loved all the walks we took her on. Being able to put her bed in our room at night was a relief, so many places won't allow a dog upstairs and we know that she would have been distressed and it would have resulted in many sleepless nights for all of us. Fremington Edge is a steep climb but well worth it for the views. The Bridge Inn, a short walk across the road, offers a warm welcome and very good food. Ensure you make a visit to St Andrew's Church, opposite Corner House, it's well worth a look around this lovely church. We certainly hope to return next year!

Superb accommodation!

We couldn't have been more comfortable in this lovely cottage. It is a lovely place to spend a holiday. It was clean and very well maintained and had everything we needed. The website details gave us all the information we required. We received a warm and friendly welcome on our arrival and were lucky with the weather - blue skies for most of the week. The car wasn't needed, as we were able to walk almost every day straight from the front door. The Number 30 bus, which stops just round the corner, also proved to be useful. The meals in the Bridge Inn across the road were lovely, as were those at the Buck in Reeth. We have stayed in this area several times, but this was by far our best experience in terms of accommodation and location. It is our intention to return next year!

Location

From the Owner

We have lived in Yorkshire for many years, near Bedale, known as the Gateway to the Dales. Years of showing the Dales to visitors had brought us to Grinton many times, passing Corner House each time. Most of our favourite places for visiting and pic-nicking, developed over time, are within a few miles of Grinton. When choosing a winter home, and a summer holiday cottage, we were looking for easy access to all the Dales have to offer, and easy access in the winter weather for ourselves. The latter has been quite a challenge recently, but the house has never disappointed us, and fulfils all the criteria we set out for it. Of course, we fell in love with the views from all the windows. Grinton church is a constant delight, and the pub always offers a warm welcome. What more could you ask?

Coast/Beach:

Whitby (70 miles) and Scarborough (approx 85 miles) are an enjoyable 1.5 to 2 hours drive away over the North Yorkshire Moors

Travel:

The closest airport is Durham Tees Valley, about 25 miles away. Count on 50 miles or so for Newcastle or Leeds Bradford. the nearest mainline railway station is Darlington, about 20 miles away.The use of a car is reccommended. Although it is possible to reach the cottage by public transport, there is little access to more than local shopping (on foot) by bus.

Distances:

The delightful village of Reeth with its huge village green is less than a mile away, with a post office, a small supermarket and several amenity shops as well as a Friday open market and several cafes, restaurants and pubs. The attractive market towns of Leyburn and Richmond are less than 10 miles away. Durham and York are approximately 50 and 60 miles away. This is true Herriot country, with many of the locations used in the TV series right on the doorstep.

Further Details:

The local village,Reeth, is known as the capital of the dale, and we walk there often to shop. It has a huge village green,with a Friday market There is a post office and supermarket, several gift shops and a craft market, cafes and restaurants, a garage and a hairdresser! Everything you could hope for in a small town, but set in amazing countryside.

Richmond station has been converted to provide a cinema, restaurant, art gallery and specialist shops.

There is a 24 hour Tesco at Catterick Garrison, and Darlington has all the chain stores you could wish for. The Metro Centre is an hour's drive (past the Angel of the North)

Newcastle and Gateshead provide extra retail therapy or a little culture (The Sage Centre and the Baltic Art gallery).

The Dales Biiking Centre, just a few minutes' walk away, offers bike hire by the day, or arranges more organised tours. The Arkle Moor Trekking centre, 5 miles away, will do the same for horse lovers.

Harrogate 40 miles A spa town to rival Bath. Harlow Carr gardens are a mecca for enthusiasts.

Masham 18 miles. Home of the Black Sheep and Theakstons Breweries, with visitor centres and restaurants

Leyburn 7 miles, with The Forbidden Corner, a garden with a difference and Campbells a supermarket which offers food enthusiasts a special treat.

Thirsk.30 miles, boasts the James Herriot Museum.

Booking conditions: Corner House can be booked only from Saturday to Saturday. The following conditions also apply: provisional bookings will be held for 5 days. A 25% deposit (non-refundable) is required to secure a booking. The balance must be paid no later than 8 weeks before the date of occupancy. Bookings made within 8 weeks of occupancy must be paid in full at the time of booking. It is the responsibility of the client to leave the house clean and tidy, as they would wish to find it.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday, arriving after 4pm, and leaving before 10am.
Short breaks, of less than 7 days, are not accepted.

Notes on prices:
Our prices are for the property per week for two people. For each extra person add £30 per week (for extra linen, towels and laundry). For a pet dog add £15 per week. Only 1 dog accepted.
Pay online to Owners Direct by credit or debit card. Or pay the property owners in sterling through BACS, by bank to bank transfer, through PayPal, or by UK cheque. Discounts are available for bookings of 2, or more, weeks at certain times of the year.. Please ask us for details.

  • Notes on accommodation: Electric storage radiator heating, together with a multi-fuel stove in the sitting room(fuel provided) One well behaved dog welcome. Non-smokers preferred, but smoking is permitted in the porch or garden. A cot will be made up on request for infants and there is a stairgate at the top of the stairs. Cot bedding is not provided. Unlimited Wi-fi internet access available, without charge. Parking is possible on the small village green adjacent to the cottage, or on the road in front of the cottage. Outside: There is a small patio garden to the front of the house. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided. A lockable shed for bicycles is available on request. The tiny village green to the side of the house provides off street parking on a first come, first served basis; when not available, cars can be parked on the street immediately in front of the house. Utility Room: Understairs cupboard in dining room contains iron, ironing board, hoover, cleaning equipment, garden furniture and barbecue. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen, towels and tea towels included in rent, changed every week. All fuel and electricity included in rent. Caretaker prepares house and makes beds before your arrival. She will offer a full cleaning service on departure, on request. Incoming phone.
