About Andreas Wagner

I've been living with my partner in St Chinian now since 1998 and am still captivated by the area. We first came to the area for a long weekend, to visit friends who'd settled here. It was Easter, the weather was gorgeous and we had a wonderful time. At the end our stay we decided to come back later in the year, and booked a two week stay in St Chinian.

Andreas Wagner purchased this house in 1992

Why Andreas Wagner chose Saint-Chinian area

We bought the house during that first holiday in St Chininan - it was very much love at first sight with the village and the area. We were staying across the road and looking from the windows of our apartment we could see this house with a large for sale sign on it. At the time there were no estate agents, so we visited with the local notary who had the keys and took us round. We visited a second time with our friends who lived locally and at the end of our holiday we'd signed for the house and arranged everything - and we've never once regretted it.

What makes this house unique

Acanthus is just a few steps away from the market square, and the house is close to all amenities whilst not being close enough to them to suffer noise. You can get to St Chinian by public transport and if you don't want to stray from the village you don't have to, everything can be found locally. A car will allow you to explore a bit more, and St Chinian is ideally placed to visit in all directions.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Can’t imagine staying anywhere else… Acanthus is gorgeous and welcoming. The hosts are extraordinary with their care and attention, and as a result walking into the house feels like coming home. I’ve stayed there 6 or 7 times now, and each time can hardly wait to get back.

Wonderful holiday home in Saint Chinian

  • 5 of 5

I have had three holiday stays at Acanthus, and I hope to be able to enjoy many more. The location of the house is ideal, only a few steps away from the market square, and the property is absolutely as described.

The kitchen is wonderfully equipped with everything anyone might need to prepare full meals, and the refrigerator/freezer is an absolute bonus, as it is not one of the little below-counter ones which can only accommodate one ice-cube tray!

The house is immaculately maintained, the bedrooms are comfortable, and the main bathroom/shower is fully modernized. The owners are extremely helpful and accommodating, and always willing to recommend activities and places to visit..

The village itself has a number of restaurants and cafes, and the twice-weekly markets are fabulous. I would certainly recommend Acanthus to a friend, and I certainly hope to return.

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

I’ve stayed at Acanthus 6 or 7 times now, and will keep coming back to St. Chinian for the people, the village, the vineyards, the markets, the shops and restaurants, and for the warmth and beauty of Acanthus. The house and its furnishing are beautiful, so comfortable, bright, and inviting. And the village has everything that’s needed for a perfect holiday—gorgeous walks, friendly shopkeepers, amazing plat du jours, local wines and cheeses and fresh produce, markets twice a week, oh, and the patisseries…oh my… I keep going back, and can’t imagine going anywhere else in southern France.

Highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Saint Chinian was wonderful and exactly what I dreamed of. This IS a charming village house and more comfortable than I could imagine. The owners set up just the right touches to make it feel like it was a home away from home...lots of books, magazines, movies to keep me happy. The location was perfect as we did not have a car but we were able to walk everywhere to get what we needed.

Some of our favorite things to do: the outdoor market on Thursdays was interesting and fun because of the food, household goods and clothing sold, going to the Bakery, the butcher, restaurants, and even an antique store in town to name a few. We walked to the Le Madura winery and took several other relaxing walks outside the village.

If you want to experience a true French village, I highly recommend this lovely house and village. I can't wait to go back!

Antony and Andreas (owners) are charming folks who eagerly helped us discover things to do in this enchanting area.

Perfect Home From Home

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a comfortable, clean and well appointed Pied a terre in the south of France look no further. Acanthus more than lives up to the pictures and reviews. It is a charming little house sat on the corner of a quiet street just off the main hub of St Chinian.

The kitchen is spacious and fully equipped with everything you need and a few things you didn't think you would! Two good sized bedrooms and a large shower room on the top floor and below a lovely bright salon across from the kitchen which opens out onto a little balcony just right for two people to sit and enjoy the quiet bustle of the town. A laundry area and second shower can be found on the ground floor and if you need anything your hosts can usually be found in the office behind, formally the garage. This is a real home from home.

St Chinian has many local wineries with free tastings and there are good restaurants to suit all budgets. On Sundays the market is excellent, offering a huge range of food, clothing and household goods. Everything you need is on the doorstep and if you want to venture further afield you are surrounded by beautiful old villages, vineyards and medieval cities such as Carcassonne which is only an hour away.

The hosts have paid great attention to detail with numerous travel guides and booklets for you to browse and they are never far away if you need advice. We came for 8 nights and had a wonderfully relaxing break. Book with confidence, you'll be in safe hands.

Regular visitors

  • 5 of 5

This was the fifth time we have stayed at Acanthus, so obviously we like it. This year we used the off season flexibility to have a ten day break in St Chinian.

There are a range of good restaurants in the main street for an evening meal and many more in the surrounding towns and villages for lunch as you travel round the area. On a fine day lunch sat on the terrace at the Petit Nice in Rouquebrun just 16 km from St Chinian is a regular event for us.

We also visit several of the local vineyards and the only problem is not to buy too much. A favourite is Chateau Belot about 1 km out on the road towards Cessenon.

Acanthus has wi-fi, English TV channels, books, DVDs etc all within an old French house which has been modernised without losing its essential character. The owners live nearby and can be contacted if required - thought the information provided has always been adequate for us.
