Casa da Lucca is a 4 bedroom, detached, spacious villa situated on the Calicas ridge just outside Lagos. It enjoys an elevated position with far reaching views. The villa, built in 2007, is located in a semi-rural setting. Approached by a private drive, the villa sits in a lovely large plot with mature gardens featuring flowering shrubs, olive, fig and almond trees. The situation is secluded and private despite being only minutes away from beach, shops, marina, bars and restaurants.
There are fine, panoramic views from the two balconies with glimpses of the sea & views of the Monchique mountains. The delightful, historic town of Lagos, the 2-mile long sandy beach of Meia Praia and the nearest supermarket are all only 5 minutes drive away. Lagos itself has a wide selection of shops, restaurants and bars.
There is a 10 x 5m pool and a large games room with table tennis, pool table and exercise bike. There are many child and family friendly features which include a free optional Pool Safety Fence.
Jo and I have been restoring property all our married life. We started in the mid seventies with a derelict stone cottage - long before the term 'self-build' had been invented. Our final project in the UK was near Oxford, where we turned a 2 bedroom bungalow into a 5 bedroom house, by doubling the footprint and adding a second storey - all while we were living in it with 4 children!
But we longed for a place in the Sun! For a long time we thought of France but when our daughter moved to Portugal we went to visit her and were blown away by the October sunshine. Since then we have had Christmas lunch outdoors three times or more – once just in shorts and tee-shirts...
Our daughter’s in-laws who run the Ocean Blue villa management company in nearby in Luz look after the villa for us.
Jo Millen purchased this villa in 2004
When we first saw the plot for Casa da Lucca, we nearly didn’t buy it!
There was rubbish everywhere – wire netting, concrete blocks, piles of timber, an old sofa under a tree. We had just finished a self-build in the UK with 20 outbuildings to demolish. We both thought: “No way! Not again!”
The car was in reverse when the owner and his wife appeared. We were shown the house – damp and gloomy - then outside, an area fenced off for pigs with more wire netting and – 20 pig sties?
And then, beyond an enormous carob tree, the unexpected - a wild flower meadow! Suddenly the rubbish, the pigs, the wire netting didn’t matter. Instead what we saw was a beautiful plot with countless mature trees and a most lovely setting. We were bewitched by the magic of the place – and have been ever since.
With such a lovely plot, we knew we had the chance to create something special. We wanted both house and garden to enhance the existing loveliness – not to compete with it and we knew that somehow the pool had to merge seamlessly with the garden.
We chose a traditional style for the villa using soft colours for the walls and roof. For the pool, we had excellent advice from a local company who helped us choose a colour that was gentle and mellow and we did the same with the tiles on the pool terrace. And of course we threw heart and soul into the garden...
Have we created something special? We believe we have. And with so many of our holiday visitors coming back year on year, it seems they think so too.
‘A wonderful gem of a place, beautifully tucked away in lush gardens & lovely scenery. A perfect tranquil hideaway where I could have stayed and stayed. Thank you!’
‘...how wonderful our holiday was, how helpful and friendly all the staff were – the cleaners were ever so sweet and kind. Your villa is an extremely relaxing and welcoming place. Your pool area is superb and gorgeously sunny and open – we loved it!’
‘We had an absolutely fabulous time. The villa was just brilliant. There was so much space for all of us. The kids especially loved the pool and spent the majority of their time in it. We all had the best 9 days and would love to return again in the future.’
‘It was a holiday that we will all be remembering for a long time to come, and hopefully we will be able to repeat it again sometime in the future’.
'Just had the perfect holiday - couldn't get enough of the pool, collecting almonds in the garden and building tree houses, lovely villa. Thanks again.'
Perfect villa for our party of 4 adults and 4 teenage boys. Villa is well designed, very clean with good quality furniture and fittings. The pool area and terrace are beautiful with many flowering and fruiting plants, the games room is large and well equipped and there are many areas of seating both inside and out. It's easy to drive into Lagos with a large free car park by the Marina and the supermarket Pingo Doce is a 5 min drive. The villa was cleaned mid week which was a nice treat and we appreciated the efficient manner in which our booking was handled and the lack of rules and conditions that we've experienced in other villas. Would highly recommend this villa.
We stayed for three weeks here and were very sorry to leave. In the middle of our stay the family joined us for a week (6 altogether) and the villa had everything we needed. The pool and outside area was fantastic, the pool is set in a beautiful garden, the pictures don't do it justice. We would definitely return. For us the walk into Lagos was perfect as we like walking (20 mins). We also fell in love with a restaurant on the beach called Gaivota Branco - best fish ever and the clams were awesome.
8 of us, ranging in age from 20 to 80, had a fantastic week at Casa da Lucca. Everything about the villa was great, from initial enquiry through booking, arrival instructions, welcome pack and, of course, the villa itself. Super pool set in lovely gardens. Spent most of the time either in and around the pool or on the verandah overlooking it. Lagos has changed a lot since our last visit but still not overdeveloped and a lovely town with great nightlife for the younger ones in our party. Only a short taxi ride back from town and only €7 even in the early hours.
Car hire to get from Faro airport and to see the surrounding area is a must. By far the cheapest we found was Zitauto at the airport, and although the set up there is rather relaxed the cars and service were fine.
Thanks for a brilliant holiday!
This well-loved villa was perfect for our entire family of children, teens, twenties and fifty-somethings!
The directions were clear so we found it easily. The first sight of the villa from the gate is glorious. It is surrounded by beautiful trees and plants, yet the building is modern and the pool is bliss. The peaceful, rustic gardens behind the house are perfect for meditation and relaxation.
The generous welcome pack of groceries and goodies was a perfect greeting. We particularly loved the fresh fruit. Thankyou
Beds are comfortable and the whole villa is beautifully furnished and equipped, plenty of hot water and powerful showers.
It did get very hot at night, and the air-con was a wee bit noisy, but we should have left the shutters closed during the day to keep the bedrooms cool.
The games room was a big hit with all of us! There is also a packed bookcase of novels and magazines.
The location is peaceful, yet close enough to Lagos Marina and the town centre to access a variety of restaurants, shops, the charming Old Town, beaches, supermarkets and activities. We tended to drive in, but it would be walk-able if the heat allowed, (bear in mind the steep hill on the return trip)
We found a little cafe-bar (Silva) just 5 minutes walk from the Villa, opposite the Chinese restaurant, whose young English owners are extremely hospitable and helpful, as well as providing delicious food.
We will certainly return to Casa Da Lucca, and are still dreaming of those sunny days in the beautiful pool!
