About the property

Villa Mjesto, Stari Grad, Hvar Island, Croatia. Restored 4 Room House Overlooking Harbour & Old Town. Short Walk From Beaches

The villa is secluded, but only a few minutes stroll from the buzzing heart of the town, which is wrapped around an inlet in the sea. It is the most beautiful and interesting town on the island, and also the best located for visiting other places on Hvar island. It is a fantastic place for a family holiday, or for a group of friends to go.

The harbour is beautiful and always busy with boat movements. There are traffic free quaysides around it with lots of places to eat and drink.

The house is spacious (c.300 sq. metres) and organised over two floors.

The upper floor has a large kitchen that enters out to a terrace that has a beautiful view over the harbour and the historic old town.

The terrace has a table that seats 10 where most guests spend much of their time. There is also a table that can seat up to 10 in the kitchen.

The upper floor also has a lounge, with TV, two bedrooms with large double beds and a large bathroom with separate bath and walk in shower.

There is a large lounge on the lower floor which has sofas and another dining table. It also has a small kitchenette. This lounge stays cool even on hot days.

There are two large bedrooms downstairs.

One has a large double bed and a child's bed. It has its own entrance from outside and has an en suite bathroom.

The other has two large single rooms. It has its own shower room and toilet.

There are four rooms in total, three with double beds and one with two single beds.

The house has been recently refurbished and is attractively furnished.

There is a large orchard in front of the house. The house is in its own grounds, with two parking spaces. There is not much traffic on the road it is on.

Stari Grad, which means "Old Town", is one of the oldest settlements in the Adriatic. It is a World Heritage Site. It has many historic buildings and atmospheric alleys.

There are many places to eat and drink near the house. There is a supermarket, fresh fish market, produce market, and bakers within a short distance.

There is a pleasant beach a few minutes walk away and other nice places to swim within walking distance.

There are walks from the villa through Mediterranean countryside, offering beautiful views. It is ideal for cycling, both around the town and in the countryside. There are way marked walking and cycling trails. There are several places in the town to hire a bicycle.

You can hire cars by the day, including open top VW Beetles. You can alternatively take buses and or taxi buses to places around the island. A variety of memorable day or half day trips can easily be done from the house.

It is also possible to hire boats and, during the season, there is dingy sailing for children.

There is a kids playground nearby and the town as a whole is a great, safe place for kids to explore and play in.

It is easy to get to direct by ferry from Split, and there is also a seaplane service from Split airport.

The villa is ideally located for exploring other parts of the island, which is famed for its beauty. It is easy to organise transport, or hire a car. There are buses to the other main towns on the island.

The villa is ideal for groups because the rooms are organised in three sections each of which has external access.

About David Geddes

The villa is owned by Sue Warren, a New Zealander who lives in England and David Geddes, an Englishman who grew up in Africa. Sue is a tourism consultant who works extensively in the Balkans. David is also a management consultant working in the visitor economy, but mainly in the UK. Sue and David periodically go to check that everything is fine at the house, in addition to using it themselves of course for family holidays, but it is looked after day to day by our excellent house manager. She takes care of our guests while they are at the villa.

David Geddes purchased this house in 2006

Why David Geddes chose Hvar

Sue was working in Croatia and fell in love with the country. She spent a lot of time looking for the perfect house and finally found the villa in 2006. David agreed that it was a beautiful proposition and joined her in refurbishing it. The house is mainly furnished with Sue's furniture from New Zealand, including works of art collected on her travels. It has the feeling of being a true home.

What makes this house unique

Perhaps the nicest thing about the villa is its location. The town is exceptionally beautiful and pleasant. It is of an ideal size - not too big, but big enough to be vibrant and have a good range of shops and restaurants. The harbour is its main asset and is always alive with activity. It is very relaxing to stroll around just watching the activity. For kids, there are four ice cream shops to choose from! For adults, numerous places to have a coffee and watch life go by, and always decisions about which restaurant to go to. Going to the supermarket does not require a big trip - it is just a short stroll away. A short walk along the harbour takes you to very pleasant swimming beaches, or out into classic "Mediterranean" countryside, with beautiful pine forests, olive groves, wildflowers and stunning views across the deep blue sea to other islands. It is the best place on the island for taking day trips and half day trips.

Great location fantastic views

  • 5 of 5

David's communication before we booked, on approach to and during our stay was very useful, and reassuring.

We were met by a local lady with very good English who showed us around and made some good suggestions; she lives locally so we had someone to contact if necessary.

We spent a lot of time on the terrace - it has a fantastic view of Stari Grad harbour. The house was very clean and the bed sheets/ towels were changed at the end of the first week. One of the en-suite bedrooms is accessed from outside, and forms a bit of an annex, which was great for our eldest and partner.

With six of us, cooking dinner was challenging but perfectly possible, but we ate out most of the time - there are many great restaurants in the town which is only a minutes' walk from the villa. We also hired bikes a car and boat in Stari Grad.

We had a fantastic time in Croatia, again. Thanks.

The harbour is a long inlet in the sea, with traffic free quaysides and boats of all sorts lining each side. It is often mirror-like, with buildings and boats reflected in the water. The old town is an atmospheric and traffic free maze of stone built alleys and squares, with interesting churches, restaurants and shops.
