Set in terraced gardens with balcony, terrace with BBQ, orchard and wood. Perfect for mountain walking and exploring Lake Como or just relaxing and enjoying the wonderful views. Nearest airports Milan Linate or Bergamo, both 1.5 hours away by car. Train stations in both Varenna and Bellano. House not suitable for those with stair climbing difficulties as it is reached by an uphill path and steps. Not suitable for very young children as garden is terraced. The lake ferries are a great way to explore. For walkers there is an old silk route pathway on hillside above the house running all along the lake.
We are now retired, so together with family and friends are able to stay at the house several times during the year. I think we have now been there at every season of the year and each has it own pleasures.
It's been fun trying to learn Italian and although I'll never be fluent the local people seem to appreciate our efforts. My latest howler was to ask our local hardware shop for condoms instead of varnish for the walls of our summer house! Of course all young Italians speak excellent English.
Kate Merriweather purchased this house in 2002
Nine years ago I was able to realise my dream of buying a little house among the mountains and lakes of Italy. Since then it has given huge pleasure to family, friends and guests renting it for holiday. For us it is an idea spot as we sail, ski and mountain walk. It has good access to 3 airports: Milan Orio di Serio 70k (best I think), Milan Linate 80K and Milan Malpensa 80k. There is also a railway station in Bellano and ferry stops. There is also a good superstrada from Milan, tunneling through the mountains.
We have wonderful views over the lake and lots of outside relaxing space to enjoy the views: a BBQ terrace with dining space, a balcony form the sitting room looking on to the lake and a kitchen terrace for eating breakfast and facing westward for sunset gazing. I love my garden here and enjoy pottering around. We have about 12 terraces of garden and woodland climbing up the mountainside. The mountain pathway system (sentieri) can be approached from a path near the side of the house. We walk for miles along these pathways, finding villages, restaurants, old churches. Two years ago a new open air swimming pool and jacuzzi opened on the lakeside in Bellano.
Can be supplied on request.
Last year we had honeymooners who were ecsatic about Casa Kate, as well as happy returning guests and satisfied newcomers.
Well-equipped holiday house on three separate levels, right next to Lake Como and with easy access to lovely hillside walks to Bellano in one direction and Verena in the other. Close to lakeside beach with small beach bar and safe swimming. Bellano is 5 minute drive (property has own garage) for morning cappuccino, delicious bakery, weekly market and evening lakeside stroll. Lake ferries run regularly from Bellano to Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo etc. This is a great base to explore a beautiful area, full of history, wonderful walks and delicious food.
You don't step out of your car into the house, though, it's around 20 rustic steps up to the house from the road. We had beautiful views of snow-capped mountains across the lake from the terrace and balcony. You can hear the trains coming past - it's less than 1 hour into central Milan - but don't let that put you off. It's a great spot!
A stunning location overlooking Lake Como. The views from the balcony and terrace are wonderful and can be enjoyed in complete privacy. The house is well equipped and there is loads of space for two. We were surprised to find that the bedroom could only be accessed via an external staircase. Not so good in the rain and rather inconvenient having to lock the house up downstairs before retiring for the night. The garage along the road was brilliant for keeping the car safe and secure. The walk to the ferry takes about 30 minutes but there is no pavement for much of the way and there is a tunnel to negotiate.
