Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here last week and had a lovely week. The cottage is so beautiful and very well equipped, with lovely gardens to rest after a busy day. It was pleasant enough to have a couple of hours with a glass of wine on four evenings, even though it was March!

Caroline and Georges were wonderful hosts, very warm and welcoming, and they were just next door if we needed anything.

The area is wonderful, very close to all the landing beaches, which was why we had chosen it, but also it would have loads to do for kids in summer with great beaches. Nearby traditional towns have traditional shops and large super markets. We cannot recommend this cottage and this area of Normandy enough!

Beautiful Cottage, Wonderful hosts, Fantastic countryside

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in early July and had a wonderful week. The cottage is really beautiful and well equipped, Caroline's gardens are absoluetly beautiful and we ate outside almost every night.

Caroline and George were wonderful hosts they didn't intrude at all but were just next door if we needed anything (tips on local bars, markets, towns and beaches).

The area is fantastic, loads to do for kids, great beaches, lovely traditional towns with thriving markets and good resturants. There's a large super market close by for all the essentials but also great bakers and markets so you don't need to use it if you don't want to. I don't want to over recommend this cottage purely so we don't have trouble when we come to book next summer!

A perfect family holiday - so relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect holiday for us and our 16 month old son. The gite was open plan which made it feel very spacious and the beautiful garden was ideal for our son to play in. Lots to do, all within a short drive including sandy beaches, a lighthouse to climb, the D Day landing beaches and nearby towns with good restaurants. We left feeling relaxed and refreshed. The warm welcome from Caroline and Georges with local farm eggs, bread and homemade jam was a very nice touch. We hope to be back!

Quiet Retreat

  • 4 of 5

This lovely cottage was just what I needed to recharge the batteries after a 7 month assignment in Myanmar. Lovely traditional features with enough modern facilities for even a small family holiday. It's tucked away in the bottom of a small Valley which shelters it from the elements especially in February! The owners are very friendly and helpful but in my case were not in the face which was just what I wanted. It's a superb Base for exploring the Cherbourg Peninsular as well as the Normandy beaches and St Michael's mount. The only downside was no English TV, but was able to keep up with the news over the provided WiFi.

Owner's Response: Dear Beth and all the family, We loved having you and seeing your happy faces coming and going every day. Your children are a delight and we will be very happy to see you all again. This week the DDay celebrations are gathering speed and everywhere is buzzing with trucks and tanks and planes and soldiers. It will be a big day for all our countries and very moving I expect. I hope the clicks are not getting on your nerves! All the best Caroline and Georges

A peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

Our host was very responsive to my numerous questions pre trip and sent us all the information we required. We were warmly greeted and shown around. The cottage is in a lovely valley with beautiful gardens and a very quiet country lane beyond the gated entrance. It had a spacious living, dining and kitchen area. Upstairs were two bedrooms and a large hall for storing things. Our 3 year old loved the garden and fresh air and enjoyed sleeping in a bunk bed. A cot was provided for out 8 month old. A supermarket and baker are a 5 minute drive away. We spent the time with friends and visiting a few local landmarks. A thoroughly enjoyable stay and with the convenience of the ferry at Cherbourg, certainly an area we would like to investigate more. I would certainly recommend staying here if you are a family of 4 and want some peace and quiet.

About Caroline da Costa

to cook and we are happy to advise and help.I am English and my husband is French. The cottage we let is part of our old Normandy house where we have lived for 21 years. We were both teachers, Georges a primary school teacher and I a textile and patchwork teacher. Recently retired we can give more time to our different interests. I love my garden and work in it as much as possible. The vegetable garden supplies us and people in the cottage with wholesome and organic produce. We walk daily with our dog in the surrounding country tracks and lanes or on the wonderful open beaches. Georges paints in watercolours and I use textiles to create hangings which I exhibit regularly. The local seafood and excellent mlisting. Be sure to use 4 numeric characteeat, and the vegetables and fruit in the markets are a delight

Caroline da Costa purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Caroline da Costa chose La Pernelle

We bought our house because my husband had been given a teaching post here. We fell in love with the gentle countryside and the wonderful varied and wild coastline and did not hesitate to settle in a small hamlet where we see very little traffic and wake to the sound of sheep or cows. The countryside is unspoilt and the many hedges shelter a huge variety of animals and birds. Our garden is a haven for all as it is totally free of any chemicals. We find the peace and remoteness from the general rush of life, a very good way to live. At the same time we are only 5 minutes drive from excellent shops and a market, and within 10 to 15 minutes one is in the hustle bustle of a small harbour and onto long sandy beaches. It is an ideal place for small children, and young families feel safe.

What makes this cottage unique

Many of our guests have a feeling of 'coming home' when they return from a day out. The cottage is decorated very simply and the interior is pleasing as well as comfortable and unpretentious. Being cooks, we have provided a maximum of good equipment so that any guest can enjoy cooking the local products. As we have tried to keep the whole layout simple, guests find the cottage easy to keep clean and there is plenty of cupboard and drawer space. The garden area can easily be limited which enables parents to keep an eye on their children, and at the same time to look out on to the bigger garden and enjoy the surrounding countryside. Country tracks and lanes lead out of the hamlet and it is possible to go for a quick or a long walk. A five minute drive brings one to the nearest town.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It's hard to find the right words to tell you how wonderful, better to say more than wonderful ("merveilleux"), our time at your house and garden was. SLC.

'We had the most wonderful time staying in your cottage in Normandy. Not only was the area fascinating and beautiful but the cottage and garden were the nicest we have ever stayed in. The cottage was beautifully decorated and provided everything we needed. We enjoyed eating outside in the lovely garden. The local neighbourhood was great for walks and days at the nearby beach. The D-Day sites and Bayeux were easy day trips away. It was the best holiday we have had in Europe and we would love to return someday.' S and RS

S. and R. Sheehan NZ.

'Congratulations on providing the perfect gite - the combination of a clean, stylish, well equipped cottage and the most amazing garden, has meant that we have loved coming 'home' at the end of each day.' R and SR.

'We are desperate to return after a glorious week in your wonderful gite. AH

Many fine unspoilt sandy beaches on both east and west coasts. Nearest is 10 minutes' drive on the east coast, 1 hour's drive to the west coast. The coastguards' path runs along most of the coastline all round the peninsula. The beaches are extremely varied and most people enjoy taking a new path down to 'La Mer' every day. Detailed maps are provided to help find the small access lanes and roads. The tides go out quite far and at low tide children and adults will enjoy rock fishing.

Nearest airport is Caen (75 minutes drive). Ferry services: Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth and Poole into Cherbourg (30 minutes drive) and Caen (75 minutes by car). LD Lines from Portsmouth to Le Havre (2 hours drive).

The sailing/fishing harbours St. Vaast la Hougue and Barfleur are 10 to 15 minutes drive. The nearest town is Quettehou, 5 minutes drive. Valognes, a big market town with historical interest is 20 minutes drive away. Cherbourg with it's port and Cité de la Mer is 35 minutes drive. Mont St Michel is 2 hours away. Bayeux and it's famous Tapestry is 1 hour's drive and Caen a further 15 minutes. The west coast of the peninsular is an hour's drive and very beautiful and different from the east coast.

Further Details:

In Quettehou, you will find 2 supermarkets, excellent butchers and bakers, a bank and a post office, restaurants and cafes. There is also a covered tennis court. In St. Vaast la Hougue, there is a huge choice of restaurants, bars and cafes on the harbour-side. The famous oysters may be bought or eaten in situ. Gosselin's the very well known shop, with it's exceptional wines and food is a centre of attraction. Trawlers sell their catch on the queyside in both Barfleur and St Vaast la Hougue. There are several fishmongers in both towns selling excellent fresh fish and seafood. Just off St Vaast la Hougue, the Island of Tatihou, where you will find a maritime museum, a dungeon, maritime gardens and a bird reserve, can be visited on foot at low tide or by boat. There are weekly markets in both these towns with vegetables, fruit, fish, cheese, and many other delights. Markets can be found every day of the week except Sunday in towns within easy driving distance. For music lovers there are many concerts throughout the Cotentin during the summer months. It is possible to walk to concerts on the Island of Tatihou and return with flaming torches accross the oyster parks. Children can enjoy a local animal park, trout fishing, rockpool fishing, boat trips, pony riding and much more. Adults will find most water sports available, and the Pont de Saire point is famous as a windsurf spot and both St. Vaast and Barfleur have sailing clubs. For rainy days it is possible to use one of the three covered swimming pools in or near Cherbourg. The Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg is also a great attraction. There is an excellent small local cinema in Réville if you enjoy watching films in French. In the summer season there are many Vide Greniers (car boot sales) mostly on Saturday or Sunday.
