About the property

Villa in Les Castagnes, Nr. St. Julien, Herault, Languedoc Roussillon - Fabulous Scenery in the Heart of the Haute Languedoc

A wonderful place for family vacations! Located in the unspoilt mountain hamlet of Les Castagnes in the centre of the Parc Naturel du Haute Languedoc, this original stone cottage has been carefully restored and extended to provide a spacious villa, with all the conveniences of modern services. The extension has been sensitively designed to complement the original cottage. Local materials and imaginative use of glass has maximised the natural light in the house, which benefits from lovely, unimpeded views over the Avant Mountains and the Caroux Mountains. The interior has been finished in an elegant modern style which complements the beams, hardwood floors and Italian tiling. 10 people can be comfortably accommodated, with a choice of 3 double bedrooms, 1 twin bedroom and a mezzanine bedroom. The Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc is an area of outstanding beauty, with mountains, fast flowing rivers, gorges and forests. Please use the following link for the most recent photos of the property and surrounding area

About Nicky Allen

We lived in Paris for 5 years when our children were little and we bought and renovated the Villa with friends to be our summer getaway.

However circumstances changed and we were moved to Canada with work. I have now lived in Canada for many years but always go back to France and to London every year. My children have lots of wonderful memories at the Villa and my daughter will actually marry there in 2015!

I still pine for Europe, especially in the long Canadian winters and so have held on to the Villa as a place where I can meet up with family and friends.

Nicky Allen purchased this villa in 1995

Why Nicky Allen chose Saint-Julien

So the property was bought initially to be a summer home and there have been lots of renovations to the little place it originally was. If you would like to see the most recent photographs and comments you can go to Facebook and look up French Villa Maison de Lavande...enjoy!

What makes this villa unique

The setting is absolutely stunning ! You swim surrounded by 360 degrees of beautiful mountain scenery in total privacy. The property originated as a small schoolhouse and the schoolhouse is the existing living can check the thickness of the stone walls to see were the newer part of the house was added on. The house has the benefit of sitting in the small hameau as though it has been there forever...but once inside the house it has all the modern amenities. My family have wonderful memories of chasing lizards, lounging by the friends children learning to swim! BBQ's and laying out in the night counting shooting stars! My daughters wedding there last year was the greatest memory for all of really was like a fairytale!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that we thought the house was extremely charming and well appointed, and was just the place for rest and relaxation. It was a nice change to visit a house that contained everything necessary for a wonderful stay, also your house managers, who were extremely efficient and lovely people. We will certainly be recommending the house to friends, family and colleagues."

"Thank you very much for renting your beautiful house in Les Castagnes. We had a great time, mostly relaxing around the pool, but also hiking the gorges, canoeing and seeing the grottos."

"Just to wanted to say that we had a great holiday at your villa. We particularly liked the location and surrounding countryside, especially the Gorges d'Heric. I enjoyed exploring the local trails and climbing the Montahut, and we also did a bike ride on the track from Mons. We've had quite a few holidays in France but your place is the area we'd most want to visit again"

Beautiful quiet location, fantastic for all the family.

Lovely spacious accommodation with beautiful views and large outdoor space, the pool was a great feature and just the right size to cool down with kids and inflatables.

Lovely area and climate, the villa not so great

  • 2 of 5

Loved being in the area, the local town and Danish restaurant were amazing, a couple of lovely days on the beach which is about an hour away. The villa needed some work on it. The pine needles kept falling in the pool so we were constantly trying to clear the pool, the decking was broken and a tad dangerous, many of the sun loungers were broken, the pool was more of a dipping pool. The pool man said he would return with a week left of our stay but did not come back, the pool turned green on our last day so that was a no go area sadly.

The inside of the villa was ok, but our bedroom door was broken and in the end we had to fix it because the pool guy did not return, he said he would fix it but did not. Not enough beds were made so we had to ask for someone to come and sort out. I thought there may have been a book on things to do, where the bins were, villa things etc, nope. Disappointing experience sadly, especially when you consider the price.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry that your experience at the Villa was not all that it should have been. There have been pool issues in the area this year and we have been trying to sort it may be due to a green Algae around this year and it would appear that an Ultraviolet light system should remedy the problem. Paul who looks after the pools in the area has been with me for many years and I think he has been a little overun with difficulties at the houses he looks after - but that is no excuse for him not getting back to you. I apologise for there not being enough beds ready for can be a bit of a guessing game ....5 can mean 2 doubles and a single ...or something completely different - so I do need to ask for more information when people are booking! I am also sorry that you had issues at the house with the door, sadly if things are not reported as they happen it can get overlooked and I will try and find out what it was and why it was not taken care of. Again I am sincerely sorry that your vacation was not all that it could have been but thank you for reporting the issues so that I can have them taken care of. Nicky Allen

Très bonnes vacances

  • 4 of 5
