About Tony Winstanley

We in our 50/60s. After lifetime travelling much of Europe, near and far reaches of the world we decided on Italy for our second home but where? Talking with a waiter in Ischia, an island off Naples we asked about Puglia to which he said it's the 'real' Italy! It satisfies our keen interest in culture, food and history, all of which are in inexhaustible supply there. It's also a wonderful and timeless retreat from our busy lives working in the UK with people with disabilities.

Hope you take the chance and share with us for yourselves what a special place Puglia is for recharging your batteries, visit the markets, sample its fantastic cuisine from local produces and meet the people in this hidden corner of Italy.

Tony Winstanley purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Tony Winstanley chose Brindisi area

The trullo feels deep in the countryside amongst olive groves, yet it is only two miles from the nearest town. Ceglie is famed for its art and gastronomy, its ducal castle is being restored and the old quarter and plaza is a must to explore!

The two seas are less than an hour to visit. Baroque Lecce an hour by modern trains from Ceglie station.

It has everything we need on hand including a chance to relax in its wonderful climate.

What makes this cottage unique

The studio is ideal for older children and teenagers who want to sample some independence from their parents but close enough for parents to keep a watchful eye on them! Both properties have all the amenities for all ages, and equal access to the pool.

The grounds are level except for a little dell at the end all safe for youngsters to play. All stone walls are low enough for children to play safety and a 'kinder' tree opposite to the trullo is suitable for climbing, all under parental supervision.

Immediately outside are many farms, lanes and a forest to explore to work up an appetite for a BBQ meal using the built in facility at the trullo.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wonderful holiday in an unusual house and peaceful setting. Excellent restaurants catered to our needs. One restaurateur opened a local cave for us to explore! Helpful locals and friendly farmer made our holiday. Definitely coming back again next year! Daughter of a guest said - hope my parents miss the plane so we can have another week here. Great place to switch off. Pool's a treat - used it three times a day

Coast/Beach:

By car the Adriatic sand coves are 30 to 45 mins away, with its three fishing ports of Torre Canne, Vilanova and Savelletri, plus Torre Guaceto marine park. North of Savelletri is the Greco-Roman town of Egnazia. Ionian coast with rugged cliffs and sandy beaches are an hour away, plus an acquapark at Pulsano. All the beaches are safe with supervision. If windy the Ionian beaches are sheltered. Plenty of seaside bars and cafes serving excellent dishes in summer on both coasts.

Travel:

Bari airport is 70km (39 miles) away and Brindisi is 40km (28 miles), both are served three days a week by Ryanair from London Stansted. Naples airport is 3.5 hours away and Rome 6 hours. Because of the country location of the trullo and the spread of sandy beaches and places of interest a car is essential. Local buses run from a bus station just over a mile away to all major towns and modern trains run between Martina and Lecce (Florence of the South).

Bikes can be hired from Ceglie.

Distances:

Ceglie Messapica is 2 miles away with its old quarter and ducal castle, with Ostuni, Martina, Cisternino and Alberobello within 15 to 30 minutes away by car. All have their historic centres with restaurants, cafes and bars. Baroque Lecce is best reached direct by train from Ceglie, as parking is near impossible there. Gallipoli and Trani are well worth visiting on a day trip as well as Matera, where 'The Passion of Christ' was filmed. Several local caves are open during the summer months.

Further Details:

Ceglie Messapica has all the local shops, banks, post office, chemists, a hospital, a good sized weekly Saturday market, and ten-pin bowling lanes with own eatery. The town is renowned for fine high class dining establishments. Other local towns has fine restaurants too. The visitors book will give you information on some excellent restaurants found by previous guests. Ostuni and Martina have larger stores for more upmarket clothes for all ages as well as large weekly markets. A mile away is a good 'express' supermarket for your daily needs. Auchan, Carrefour, Leclerc and Cityper are all within an hour away.

Local trains to Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto, plus buses to major towns.
