About the property

House in Bagnols en Foret, between Frejus and Fayence, Var, Cote d'Azur, France - Relaxing, Full Of Caracter, Rural Setting 2km From Village, Near Beach & Lake, 1h To Nice Airport

La Bergerie is a 17th Century, Provencal, old stone house with character and charm, which was originally built for a Shepherd and their herd. Having grown in size (and comfort!) since then, our family house is now ideal for families or small groups and is available to rent all year round. Our charming family home is situated within 5,000 sq/m of private grounds on a slight hill, surrounded by trees with it's own private swimming pool.

Downstairs consists of an entrance hall, cloakroom, kitchen/dining room, hall and office area, and sitting room and large covered terrace. The first floor has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a seperate w/c.

Kitchen: A few steps from the entrance hall lead you down to the large fully equipped kitchen and dining room with terracotta floors. You will find plenty of crockery and utensils. The cherry wood dining table seats 8 to 10 comfortably. Two sets of French doors lead to the outside dining area which seats up to 10 also.

Sitting Room: The sitting room is located off the central hall. With its welcoming open fireplace and old wood beams, it is a cosy place to relax in the winter. During the summer, it stays cool (thanks to it's walls which are almost a metre thick) and is perfect for those looking to escape the summer heat.

The room is comfortably furnished with some antique furniture, including a traditional large "armoire" cupboard, which houses the toys, games, books, CDs etc. There are 2 sofas, chairs and side tables. You will find the television, DVD player and hi-fi in here. French doors lead out to a large covered terrace.

Covered terrace: French doors lead out from the Sitting Room to a peaceful, large covered terrace with a gas Weber BBQ. This is a great area to relax in if you want some shade. Also a good spot to enjoy an evening playing cards, games or just reading. You can even see the neighbour's horses from here!

Hall/Office area: The entrance hall also leads to the central hall with an office area. The desk, which is located just under a window looking out to the rear gardens, is a suitable place to sit for those who need to work whilst away. The telephone and broadband are available for your use.

The First Floor: This is accessed via a staircase, which leads from the central hall. It consists of 4 double bedrooms (one twin & three kings), 2 bathrooms and 1 separate WC.
The twin bedroom, 1 double bedroom and a bathroom containing a shower, separate bath, w/c, sink and ample storage are situated at one end of the 1st floor. Two double rooms are at the other end with a bathroom and separate WC.

Bedroom 1 has a comfotable "Heals" king bed (160cm wide) with a window facing south with views over the countryside and towards the pool. It has a wardrobe.

Bedroom 2 has two single beds and a window facing north towards the rear of the house. It has storage shelves.

Bedroom 3 (the smallest) has a king bed (160cm wide) and south facing views over the dining terrace and towards the pool. There is a very large wardrobe in this room.

Bedroom 4 has a king size bed (160cm wide) and it's window faces west. This is, I think, the oldest bedroom in the house and has slanting ceilings. There is hanging space and shelves for your clothes.

Two travel cots are available upon request and can fit in any of the bedrooms.

Gardens and Pool: The swimming pool area is located slightly away from the house and is accessed via about 10 steps (fairly steep) with a hand rail. The pool measures 10x5 metres and has Roman steps for easy access. An alarm has been fitted to the pool to comply with current French regulations.

The pool house has a hot water shower and WC as well as a summer kitchen area with BBQ, sink and fridge. Sun loungers, parasols and pool towels are supplied for your comfort. Please note that the pool is open from May to September inclusive. Please ask for extended opening times.

The garden is all fenced, so little explorers are safe to roam around. Electric gates give you access to the grounds and there is enough space to park at least 4 cars.

The garden is well stocked with local trees, plants and fauna including oak, olive and pine trees.

General: Bath towels and bed linen are supplied. The beds are made up for your arrival and the house fuly prepped and clean. For those staying more than 1 week, the house will be cleaned weekly and the sheets and towels will also be changed.

The gardener and pool man visit regularly.

Central heating is necessary during the cooler months and there is a fee.

Children are welcome - it is a family house! The elderly or infirm must be aware that due to the age of the house and the terrain, there are a few steps and different levels within the house and gardens. Wheelchair access is not possible unfortunately. 
The house is fitted with an intruder alarm, a safe, smoke detectors and fire blanket.

I was fortunate enough to have spent my teenage years in the "Gard" area and really enjoyed growing up there. I now live in England with my family and try to escape to France as often as possible.

Why Alice Amissah chose Bagnols-en-Forêt

I dreamt of finding an old stone house in this area but didn't think it possible at the time and so was very lucky when I found La Bergerie. I fell in love with the house instantly and after looking at about 70 properties, knew the search was over. I love the old stone walls: their colour, thickness (almost 1 metre in places), texture. I love the location, the light, the colours. I slow down when I am at the house and like to spend as much time there as possible.

For me, the Var area has something for everyone.

It is a stunning wooded area (the second most wooded area in France), dotted with hilltop villages, lakes & amazing vineyards. Great for walks and a whole load of outdoor activities.

Then, it has a a beautiful coast line with a mix of both rugged and sandy beaches.

I love the fact that one can enjoy the beaches, culture, museums, shopping and high life the area has to offer and then step back in time in the small villages and countryside. It ticks all the boxes and suits all ages. Plus it is easy to get to with Nice & Toulon airports under an hour away.

What makes this house unique

I fell in love with the house the moment I set eyes on it. The setting, the old stone, the character...these are just some of the great aspects that make La Bergerie such a special place. Time can almost stop whilst there...

The quiet and idyllic location enables a relaxing holiday but with the option to enjoy easy access to beaches, towns, restaurants, sports activities, Golf, Spas, shopping and a long list of things to do and places to visit.

When I built the swimming pool, my goal was to create an area that would have all the facilities needed so that you could relax without having to keep returning to the house. Hence the pool house with w/c, shower, kitchen area, BBQ and fridge.

Having a House Manager to meet & greet and be a main point of contact was essential for me as I am unable to be on site myself and welcome you to my home personaly.

This lovely charming house was set in large tranquil grounds with a wonderful pool. It's great for sitting around with family and friends and just relaxing. It spacious rooms, pleanty of areas to get the sun or shaded and a lovely pool with great pool house, toilet and Fridge. Also well stocked with things you need for a relaxed holiday, all towels & linen provided and changed every week. we were very satisfied with the level of service and cleanliness. We would recommend the house t others. Thank you!

Notes on accommodation: Double beds measure 160cm x 200cm. Single beds measure 90cm x 190cm. Outside: The house is set within over 5000sqm of land and has an automatic gate to gain acces. At the top of the drive is space to park at least 3 cars (one of which under a covered carport. The grounds are fully fenced off. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The house is fully prepared for your arrival and all beds are made up. A weekly clean is done thereafter along with a full change of clean bed and bath linen. Pool towels are included. Extra midweek cleaning can be arranged and will be payable locally. The House Manager can cook for you upon request. Other: Spacious "Entrance Hall" with window, large coat rack, chest of drawers and cosy chair. Very handy downstairs w/c located off Entrance hall. "Office area" with desk and peaceful views over rear garden.This room doubles as a play area too.

A house with a soul in a beautiful location

We spend a week in the house, but I wish we booked it for at least 2 weeks. Spacious house with everything a family needs for a vacation. Ideal for a family with children. There is a plenty of space outside the house for them to play. The kitchen was very well stocked with cutlery, plates, etc. The house is very close to the village and a supermarket is literally around the corner. The owner provided excellent info about the house and places to visit in the vicinity. I can highly recommend this house.

It was Heaven

Oh! I wish we were still there!

This very attractively renovated farmhouse was great for our family holiday this summer. The location between coast and hilltop villages was perfect for us. For the more energetic in our group, much fun and games were had in the pool and the spacious gardens, whilst those seeking a little quiet time were well catered for the quiet areas and covered terrace.

The house was spacious with comfortable beds large inside and outside dining tables for long relaxed meals. The kitchen was very well stocked with cutlery, plates etc. and the BBQ was used a lot.

The owners were very helpful prior to our arrival and the house was everything we expected it to be. I would definitely recommend this house.

Tranquil Oasis

La Bergerie is one of the nicest properties we have rented. It is a lovely old farmhouse in the hills behind the Mediterranean but with easy access to Nice, Frejus and St Tropez as well as all the picturesque hill villages of Provence. It has a fabulous pool and lovely outside areas for barbeques and relaxing. It has good sized grounds and is very suitable for children. Inside the house is well equipped, clean and comfortable. There are excellent instructions and information on local attractions and places to eat and we were made most welcome on our check-in - and also much appreciated the bottle of wine in the fridge! We were a group of 4 couples and we had a really relaxing, fun time. There are some good little markets nearby and the Boules court in Bagnols must have the best views in all of France! Whether you are a family or a group of adults I can't recommend it highly enough

Peaceful, spacious and well laid out

The layout is ideal for 2 families because each family could have one half of upstairs each. The pool and pool area is amazing and ideal for small children because of the grassy surround that they can play on and because of the Roman steps leading into the pool. The fact that the house is only a 25 minute drive from a lovely beach (the one running west of Frejus) whilst at the same time offering a more rural, mountain location is a big plus too. Also, the fact that it is only an hour's drive from Nice airport. Having all the toys & books in was a bonus too!

There are some wonderful restaurants in the area with such choice from a small cafe to an amazing Michelin Star culinary experience and is generally the case in France, children are welcome.

We had lots of fun at the nearby lac St.Cassien which has some inflatables, pedalos, lovely views and swimming.

Great walking routes in the surrounding forests and valleys.

We were very satisfied with the service we received from the first point of contact to after check out. The Location, House Managers, cleanliness of house and linen, and the property were also all extremely satisfactory.

Bagnols-en-Foret is a typical provencal hilltop village situated at equal distances between the hinterland town of Fayence and the coast at Frejus-St.Raphael. The village is perched in the hills with breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside, most of which is oak forests, broom and wild thyme fields.

There are lots of long stunning walking paths which take you though the forest and hills…heaven for those who love the outdoors and fantastic all year.

Bagnols-en-Foret has a small selection of shops and amenities: 2 Bakeries, Chemist, Florist, Newsagent, Post Office, Hairdresser, cash machine, Estate Agents, Doctor…

A good selection of Bars, restaurants, pizzerias and cafes to choose from when you fancy a meal out.

A new Carrefour Contact supermarket is within walking distance of the house. It has a Butcher, Bakery and 24h Petrol.

There is a twice weekly market in Bagnols-en-Foret and all the surrounding towns have markets at least once a week. One of the main markets is Fayence...well worth a visit.

Just some of the things to do in the local area:

Coast/Beach: The closest beaches are in St Raphael and Frejus, which are about 18km away. Frejus Beach, St.Aygulf, Les Issambres, Agay...

The long sandy beaches of Frejus offer water sports as does the breathtaking Lac St. Cassien - 15 minutes away.

The glamour of Cannes or charm of Antibes is only 40 mins away. Nice or St Tropez under an hour. All great for a day out. You could pop to Italy for lunch or go to the Southern Alps for the day. There is plenty to keep you busy (that is only if you can tear yourself away from the tranquility of La Bergerie!)

Outdoor sports are big in this part of the world. With a great choice from cliff climbing in the nearby Gorges du Blavet, stunning walks, Gliding in Fayence, Karting in Frejus, Mountain biking (anywhere!), horse riding, Fishing, swimming, canoing, padalo and wake boarding in the Lac St.Cassien. Zip wire, trampoling in the treetops (yes!) and of course GOLF. The Terre Blanche offers 2 x 18 holes within a 15 minutes drive and also Saint Endreol just to name the nearest.

If that’s not enough, try the Zoo, Water parks, indoor bowling or trampolining in Frejus. Nightclubs & cinemas in Frejus, St Raphael or St Tropez & Cannes.

So, with walking in the hills, discovering the local wine and food, pottering round the outdoor markets and antique fairs and shops, sailing, fishing, shopping, visiting museums, historic sites of interest, the Glamour of the Riviera...clearly there is something for everyone!

As you can see, Bagnols en Foret is the perfect base for visiting the Riviera and the Var countryside. See you soon at La Bergerie!

Distances: The property is located just 2 km outside of the village. The closest towns are Fayence to the north (about 12 minutes) and St Raphael/Frejus to the south (about 20 minutes).

Nice is the nearest airport (70km) and it takes just an hour to drive from the airport to the house. Car hire is essential. Toulon and Marseille airports are under 2 hours away.

The A8 motorway, junction 38, is just 13km away.

TGV trains to St.Raphael (19km) and Les Arcs under 30 minutes.

Calais is 12 hours drive approx.

Stay tax £1.40 per night, per person. This amount will be due to the owner upon arrival. Does not apply to children under 18 years.

Booking Notes:
A deposit of 25% is required to confirm the booking. The balance (75%) is required 10 weeks before arrival.
A refundable security deposit of 800 euros, payable at the same time as the rental balance, is required to cover any breakages, loss of keys of damage. This will be refunded 2 weeks after your stay

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is usually on Saturdays although we try to be as flexible as possible.
Our House Manager will meet you at the house at a pre-arranged check-in time (normally 5pm) and will also meet you on the morning of your check-out.

We aim to provide a quality service: a clean property on arrival, personnal check-in and check-out, beds made up with freshly laundered sheets, pool and bath towels provided, WIFI and on hand support during your stay.
We can also provide extra cleaning, grocery shopping, babysitting and a chef at home with advance notice.
Do not use pool towels at the beach. Do not use the house towels at the pool or beach. Bring your own beach towels please.

An extra 200 euros per week will be charged when heating is required. Normally required between November and April approximately.

We recommend you take out insurance against cancellation due to unforseen circonstances, dammage, loss of belongings and accidents.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
