Modernised Stone Cottage in Beautiful Suisse Normande

Overview

Property

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Cottage near Clecy, Calvados, Normandy, - Hilltop Location in Rural Surroundings

This is a rural location in a small hamlet, ideal for those who want peace and beauty yet with easy access to activities and sightseeing. Just below the house there are walking and cycle trails. The whole property also contains the owner's house, several outbuildings, a garden and two fields where Shetland ponies are grazed. It is all securely enclosed so safe for dogs or children. The cottage itself is traditional, but has all modernised features including electric radiators for controlled heat in every room. Access to the first floor is by a spiral stair so may not be suitable for very elderly or infirm guests. The cottage is rustic in style with beams but the ceilings are high enough for everyone.

There are three bedrooms that sleep 8 people, and the facilities have been renocated this year to provide one full bathroom with bath/shower, washbasin and toilet, one separate WC with hand basin and an ensuite shower to the main bedroom. So even if you are in a large family or grup of 8, you should never have to wait for the bathroom!

About the Owner

I retired 8 years ago after thirty years in media as a TV journalist, video producer and university lecturer. I was privileged to work in Bosnia for almost ten years, helping reconstruct their TV system after the war. I spent three of those years as Chief Executive of the first postwar national TV network in the country.

Now I love the peace and quiet of the Normandy countryside, occupying myself looking after my animals (ponies and cats) and spending time with the good friends I have made here. I also volunteer at the local cat shelter. The gite gives me a steady stream of new friends, some of whom have made return visits.

I enjoy my flower and vegetable gardens and guests last year benefited from good crops of beans, courgettes and strawberries! And there is lots of fruit to share

'Comfort, and a beautiful and peaceful setting. The superbly equipped gite has everything we look for in holiday accommodation. In two weeks, we have experienced only a fraction of what Normandy has to offer. We'll be back!' ((Helen and Chris, N Yorks)

Lovely and well equipped in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week here. Five of us, 3 adults and two children, comfortably accommodated in a very well equipped and beautifully maintained cottage.

Jenny was on hand to advise on the area and where to go.

In particular we loved "La Guingette" on Monday night at Pont d'Ouilly. You must walk across the rocks to Clecy and for those of an adventurous disposition the Via Ferrata climb and zip wire are fantastic.

The house itself is quietly located but provides easy access to a wide range of activities and days out that we could not possibly cover in one trip. Bateaux and the D Day beaches are an easy hours drive away.

There are a good range of restaurants in nearby Clecy as well as the immaculate Creperie situated in La Pommeraye serving a range of tasty crepes.

The kids loved staying here, making friends with the ponies and other animals (one of the cats in particular), and enjoyed riding both here and at a ranch recommended to us by Jenny.

A lovely and relaxing week. Thank you very much!

A relaxed and well equipped cottage in rural paradise

  • 5 of 5

We received a very warm welcome with refreshments and flowers from the garden on arrival. The owner of the property could not be more friendly and helpful. She arranged horse riding for us and was able to advise us on where to eat, how to obtain a fishing permit etc. nothing was too much trouble. We used her high chair and travel cot for our one year old and she even offered to babysit. The cottage is well equipped with a comfortable lounge, kitchen and dining table downstairs and three bedrooms, bathroom, shower room and loo upstairs. We enjoyed talking to the resident goat, ponies, cats and dog and listening to the dawn chorus of the birds every morning. During a day of beautiful weather we sat outside at the large outdoor table and enjoyed a delicious al fresco lunch, whilst admiring the view. It's a beautiful part of France and the cottage is in a very peaceful part of the Suisse Normande, situated at the end of a no through road. We couldn't hear any traffic noise. Bliss! We could park right outside the door on the gated driveway, which was perfect as we had lots of baby equipment to heave in and out of the car every day. A very enjoyable stay indeed.

Great location, amazing owner!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this beautiful spacious cottage last year after finding it a little last minute. Upon arrival we had a home made cake and bottle of wine waiting for us and it got even better from there on in. You really are in the middle of beautiful countryside with no end of places to visit nearby. Jenny is amazing! She has no end of patience! My daughters would almost every day ask if they could ride the ponies and each time Jenny would say yes and get them ready and also teach the girls how to look after them etc. She would give us recommendations on places to visit that would be suitable for the children, or places to walk. It really was a lovely little break and not too far from Calais. Would definitely recommend, and we hope to go back! Thanks Jenny and sorry its taken me so long to write this!

Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from our second visit here - yet again a fabulous week. Well equipped and spacious cottage with superb views across the valley. The cottage is located in a peaceful hamlet and we found it easy to access a range of outdoor activities (walking - right from the door, canoeing, orienteering and a 'go-ape' style course). We also visited the coast and numerous D-Day museums and sites. Jenny is very welcoming and gave us plenty of suggestions for places to visit. The animals provided plenty of entertainment and are all very friendly.

Beautiful spot

  • 4 of 5

My friends and I enjoyed a relaxing week here. Local from the house we enjoyed walking, cycling, pedal-boating and the sweeping views throughout the area. We we're able to eat out close-by on the Sunday evening which is always a blessing in rural France. We did a lot of cooking ourselves and appreciated the kitchen facilities as well as the local market only a short drive away. Jenny the owner is both friendly and helpful and we never felt short of information needed to organise ourselves while remaining relaxed. There are a lot of pets and animals on site but they are all gentle and playful so as long as you don't mind their occasional cheekiness they are a significant enhancement to relaxation drawing you away from the cares and busyness of the modern world. The silence in the area is broken only by the copious birdsong in the air - air which is clean, fresh and beautifully scented. And finally there are good beds and always a hot bath or shower waiting to be had. Would go back.

Location

From the Owner

It was always my dream to live in France - I fell in love with the country and culture when I was fifteen. And I also loved the Bosnian mountains and rivers when I was working there. This part of Normandy is as close as I could get to finding that here. I have space and safety for my cats and ponies, far from any main road but only five minutes from the shops and bars of Clecy. The house is surrounded by fields and forest, with a small lane giving access to the hamlet, which only has eight houses. At the same time, I am only thirty five minutes from Caen, which has all the delights and amenities of a big city, and fifty minutes from the ferry port of Ouistreham, so there is no long drive this side of the Channel. Paris is only two hours away by train.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Carpiquet at 30 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : La Dame Blanche at 3 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Ouistreham/Caen at 40 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Clecy at 5 Kilometres Nearest Train : Flers or Caen at 20 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : A13 or A88 at 25 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : La |Route des Crepes at 2 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Ouistreham at 40 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

The Normandy beaches, for historical and leisure interest, are about 45 minutes away, where you can find wide golden sandy beaches for fun, as well as the WW11 landing sites. It is also possible to do a day trip to Mont St Michel which is about 2 hours drive.

Travel:

The nearest airports are Caen Carpiquet, 45 minutes drive, or Deauville, an hour and a quarter. It is not recommended to come without your own transport, whether car or bike as it is a 25 minute walk to the nearest shop or bus. The nearest channel port is Caen. Ouistreham, 50 minutes drive. From Cherbourg or Le Havre it is around 90 minutes and Calais is 3 hours away. Paris is about 2-3 hours depending on conditions and route.

Distances:

The nearest village with shops is Clecy, 5 minutes by car and 20 minutes walk along a beautiful clifftop path above the river Orne. For bigger and better shops and a supermarket Thury-Harcourt is 12 minutes by car. The city of Caen is 30 minutes away.

Further Details:

It is an ideal area for activity holidays, including mountain biking, horse riding, walking, rock climbing, kayaking and canoeing. All these are available within a few minutes' drive or even in walking distance. For experienced horse riders who want to try something new, we have an arrangement with a local equestrian centre who specialise in Western riding and can offer trial sessions or trail rides on superb western trained horses at very reasonable rates.

There is also a marvellous health spa only 3 minutes way, with saunas, Turkish bath, massage and aromatherapy facilities, all set in an historical building. There are colourful local markets as well as shops and banks in Conde sur Noireau, Caen and Falaise. For eating out, there are many restaurants and bars along the local river, or on the coast near Caen. Sightseeing can include the Normandy landing beaches and associated museums and cemeteries, the chateaux of William the Conqueror at Falaise and Caen, a Roman villa at Vieux and the cities of Caen, Bayeux and Rouen.

Facilities

From the Owner

When I first came here, I lived in what is now the rental cottage for a year while I did up the adjacent barn, and then switched so that the cottage is now for rent and I live next door. The cottage still has all the conveniences and equipment that anyone could need - I lived in it and I know. The house is at the top of the hamlet, so has the best views over the valley. It is south facing and enjoys sun all day long, though there is shade in the garden. There is no through traffic and only the singing of the birds and the frogs to wake you up in the morning! Children love the ponies, swing set and paddling pool. There is plenty of room to play football or boules, and many wonderful walks that start from the house, over hills and through the forest.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage is centrally heated, but in Summer there are portable heaters and fans available if needed. There is constant hot water. Children and pets are welcome and the staircase and windows are railed in. A stair gate is available for extra safety. There is a pond in the garden, so toddlers should be supervised outside. There is a fence and gates, so it is safe for well-behaved dogs to be let out on the property. As the owner has cats and horses it may not be suitable for those with allergies to animal hair. Outside: There is a lawned area of the garden which is for the private use of guests, with table, recliner chairs and benches. There is also a gravelled area with private BBQ and dining facilities. Children have a swing set and a toddler paddling pool. Guests are welcome to help with the ponies! I have two adult mountain bikes available for guests' use. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, bed and table linen are included and there are spares available. The property is cleaned weekly, more often on request.
