We live in Kent, close to Leeds Castle, as you can tell from our photo which was taken at the Leeds & Broomfield Cricket Club 200 year dinner.

We have two boys aged 24 & 22, and have lived in and around Maidstone since we were married.

Lisa works for Age UK, and Nick is in Software sales.

Nick likes to play golf and follows most motor sports especially F1, and Lisa likes horse riding and anything equestrian.

Family holiday - 2 week stay

This was our 2nd visit to Praia del Rey. Last time we chose a villa package holiday for our family of 5 but felt it was too big for what we needed. This time we decided to book flights and accommodation independently. The apartment was perfect for us. The pool was in full view so great for keeping an eye on the kids. Facilities were excellent. Everything we needed. Very clean too. Lots of tourist information available. Wifi available - seemed to be strongest at the pool area. BBC/ITV TV channels available which was great when kids went to bed ( Olympics was on). We did a run/ played tennis most mornings. Beach was busy at weekends but relatively quiet during the week. Very clean. Sea is not suitable for swimming with children. Paddling ok and use of body boards in shallow water but waves very strong - good for surfing !!! The complex area had a small grocery shop which we rarely used. We found local supermarkets LIDL/ Continente in Peniche and Caldas Da Rainha which were cheaper. Kids enjoyed the kids club too - very friendly staff. The Argento restaurant was lovely - a little on pricey side but great for a treat. Definitely need a car to get about. We love Praia del Rey as it is so relaxed/ family orientated. Quiet. Weather was great. Can be cloudy some mornings but this burns off quickly. Cooler than the Algarve too. Only negative was that it took a while to find the apartment when we arrived as street wasn't signposted so despite having a map with information we had to ask for directions. Other than that will definitely go back again and book this apartment

After spending many holidays in The Algarve, we discovered Praia d'el Rey and quickly fell in love with the region, as it is still largely uncommercial and it's only a short drive from local shops and villages to experience the real Portugal. Lisbon is only an hours drive away for the airport and city shopping and culture.

The Praia D'El Rey beach stretches for miles in both directions and is excellent for sunbathing, walking and surfing. There are parking areas for beach access, or it can be walked in about 10 minutes from the apartment. A 10 minutes drive away finds Obidos Lagoon which is ideal for year-round watersports and swimming for families. Although the lagoon is open to the sea, it's sheltered from the Atlantic waves, making it an ideal location for all levels.


Praia d'el Rey is an easy 1 hour drive from Lisbon airport served by all the popular UK airports including Bristol/Liverpool/Gatwick/Luton & Birmingham (BA/Easyjet/Monarch/Air Portugal/BMI). You can also fly into Porto (Ryanair/Air Portugal) which is about 2.5 hours drive from Praia. Car hire is essential.


The ancient walled city of Obidos is approximately 10 km from development with its beautiful old churches, interesting shops and surrounding restaurants. Peniche is approx 10 km also and offers shopping, beaches and more restaurants. The small village of Serra d'el Rey is 5 km with restaurants and small supermarket. A major supermarket is a further few km away.

Further Details:

Tennis academy with 7 courts a short walk from the apartment, with coaching and tournaments. Activity center (behind the clubhouse) runs various activities for children including quads, surfing and paintballing. There is a large driving range and golf lessons are available. A full sized all-weather football pitch is in place ready for football related activities. This region is noted for it's equestrian facilities, and there are plenty of riding establishments to suit all abilities close by.

Praia d'el Rey is an award winning golf course, and the resort also caters for other recreations such as tennis, cycling and a Spa Hotel. Eating out is very reasonable for families, and choices range from Pizzeria's through to boutique restaurants. The local area is also close to the Red Wine Route, as Portugal is re-establishing its reputation for quality affordable wines. The Silver Coast also has a good reputation within the surfing community, and nearby Peniche and Baleal now host part of the global Rip Curl championship.
