About the Owner

My husband and I were on holiday in Carteret in 2004 and were so taken with the town's charm and facilities that when we saw the house in an estate agent's window we decided to buy it. We are now partly retired so can enjoy coming here out of season, especially at Easter, when we use the whole house for a family get- together! Our daughter and her family live a couple of hours drive away so her two boys have their favourite places and are looking forward to joining the sailing school when they are old enough! Our main home is in the Fens but I was born in Dublin so really miss the sea. We spend alot of our time in Carteret on the beaches, swimming or walking the dog!

A Charming Cottage

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely old stone cottage, on a very quiet road on the outskirts of Carteret which is a very charming fishing village. The cottage is nicely arranged inside. The large bedroom downstairs is nice and cool and has some lovely original features and a very comfortable double bed. The bathroom, toilet and kitchen facilities are quite basic but functional. The upstairs open plan living space and kitchen has a nice feel to it. It is on the small side but was just big enough for the six of us (although there were only 4 dining chairs). The mezzanine where the children slept is very cosy if a little hot although there are velux windows to keep it a bit cooler. The only slight downside is that, to get to the small back yard, you have to go out the front door, which is straight onto the road, and walk round to the back of the house. However, it is well equipped with BBQ equipment, an outside sink and large table and chairs.

The centre of the village and the little harbour are about 15 mins walk from the cottage and it's about 25 mins walk to a very nice and clean beach. There's a lovely coastal walk with amazing views which take you past a small ruined church and leads to a wild beach with a protected area of sand dunes full of butterflies - all within a (long) walk from the cottage. There is a a field with a horse and donkey, which the kids liked, on the way from the cottage into the village.

There is a wonderful market in Carteret on Thursdays and a tourist train which will take you to a market in another, larger seaside town (although we didn't take this).

We had a lovely relaxed holiday. I would recommend this cottage and this area and would happily go back.

From the Owner

Carteret is a holiday town with a large yachting marina but it is also a working port. Winter and summer, the fishing boats go out for lobsters and "Bulots"- the local speciality, a bit of an acquired taste! In summer you can take the ferry over to the Channel Islands. Historically Carteret was once much busier and you can still see the big merchants' houses as well as the little fishermen's cottages like our own. Carteret is surrounded by farmland and the tourist office has promoted the opening up of old farm tracks as footpaths and cycleways. So when you want a change from the seaside you can follow the winding paths through the dunes or up the hillside. We are still discovering delightful hamlets and ports in the rest of the peninsula!

5 minutes walk from the cottage brings you to the modern marina and yacht club. This is at the head of a busy harbour used by trawlers, the Channel Islands Ferry and a sailing school. Another 15 minutes walk along the quayside brings you to the blue flag swimming beach. This is a children's paradise, with lots of sand and rock pools. During the season it is patrolled by life guards , ice-cream and snacks are available from the kiosk or the beachside restaurant, Le Potiniere.

Carteret is 40 minutes drive from the ferry port of Cherbourg. It can also be reached from Caen or Le Havre. There are year round crossings from Portsmouth and Poole, by standard ferry or catamaran. Dinard airport is 2 hours drive away, with regular flights from Stansted by Ryanair.Flybe operate flights from Southhampton to Cherbourg. Use of a car is recommended.

Carteret's twin town Barneville is 5 minutes by car and another 5 minutes brings you to Barneville Plage, a popular resort with a huge beach, offering plenty of water sports and a night club. Portbail, a very old fishing village, is also a short distance away. Bayeux and the D-Day Landing beaches are about an hour's drive away. The Cotentin peninsula has many interesting old towns such as Valognes and Briquebec, while Cherbourg itself is worth visiting for its shops and sea-life centre.

Further Details:

The local shops include a boulangerie and patisserie, a delicatessen and grocery, as well as clothes, book and marine shops. There are also interesting small galleries and a privately operated steam train which runs to Portbail on Tuesday's and Sunday's during the season.

A branch of the tourist office is open near the station, from Easter to October and is manned by very helpful staff, who usually speak some English. There is a Wifi point at the back of the tourist office building which is live all year. The main office (open all year) is in Barneville. The main bank is also in Barneville but there is a cash point in Carteret beside the post office. There is a large supermarket (Carrefour) and Poissonerie at Barneville and a Pharmacy, doctors and dentists. There is also a launderetteand a range of small shops.

On Saturday's throughout the year there is a very popular market in Barneville but there is also a smaller market on Thursdays in Carteret and Tuesday's in Portbail. Carteret and the neighbouring villages are well supplied with places to eat, from Pizzeria and creperies to waterfront seafood restaurants which range from cheap and cheerful to the exclusive Michelin starred Marine Hotel.

From the Owner

After a long tedious journey to Portsmouth it is wonderful to drive off the boat in Cherbourg and know you will be in the house in 40 minutes! If you are not in the mood to cook there is a wide choice of restaurants, from cheap and cheerful to haute cuisine, all within walking distance. However, you come home at night to the quiet of Valnotte! An interest in art runs in my family so I enjoy pottering round the small galleries in Carteret and Portbail. The grand children prefer the cartoon films showing in Carteret's little cinema! Because our grandchildren have been coming since they were babies, we have made the cottage child-friendly, with toys, books, games, stair gates and a high chair available on request.
