About Jackie & Steve Johnson

My husband Steve and used to both fly long haul for a major UK airline, but in 2004 I decided after 20 years it was time to hang up my wings and to come and live full time in our beautiful home here in France .Steve continued to fly as a pilot until recently but now enjoys retirement here with our Golden Retrievers and me.

Jackie & Steve Johnson purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Jackie & Steve Johnson chose Charente-Maritime

We spent a couple of years travelling around different parts of France searching for the perfect home for us ,but something kept drawing us back to the Charente Maritime and when the house came onto the market I was unable to get time off work to come down and view the property ,so Steve came on his own and agreed to the sale without me,but I trusted completely in him and his decision that this was the right place for us .He wasn't wrong!

A fabulous holiday - thank you!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in this beautiful part of France. There were plenty of interesting places to visit; La Rochelle, Ile de Re, St Emillion and Bordeaux to mention a few. The nearest beach was only a short drive away.

The cottage was very well equipped with everything we needed. The garden was gorgeous and the pool was very welcome to cool off in the 34 degree heat. Jackie and Steve were the perfect hosts, not only providing information about the area but also inviting us to taste the local wine - Teddy and Jasmine were very entertaining too!

We have returned home fully relaxed and would definitely recommend to others needing a week or two of R&R.

We hope to return for two weeks next year!

Fabulous time and great hosts

  • 5 of 5

The gite is really well appointed with everything you could wish for. The gardens and pool are great to relax, and Steve and Jackie could not be better hosts.

If you want a relaxing holiday for two in a quiet rural location but with easy access to the sea, vineyards and the major cities/towns of Bordeaux, Rochefort and Royan, then this is the place for you. We hope to be back

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Our nearest beaches are just 40 mins away by car at Meschers. These are small coves with safe, sandy beaches one of which is dog friendly all year round. Five mins further on are the fantastic beaches of St Georges de Didonne and Royan.

Travel:

Bordeaux airport is approx 50 mins away with the cottage being easy to find just 10 mins from the A10 motorway. La Rochelle airport is 65 mins away and Poiters 90 mins. By car we are 7.5 hours drive from Calais or the channel tunnel. 6 hours drive from La Harve or Cherbourg and 5 hours from Caen.

Distances:

The nearest village of St Ciers du Taillon is 5 mins away by car for local shopping bread, meat wine, post office etc. 10 mins away is the market town of Mirambeau with a supermarket and a variety of shops including a baker, butcher, pharmacy, hairdressers, bank and a couple of local bars. We also have a selection of good local restaurants that we can happily recommend.

Further Details:

There are many interesting places to visit the Gironde Estuary is just 15 mins away by car . Also Aquitaine and the Medoc with its famous vineyards (St.Estephe,Latour and Pauillac) to name but a few are in the region. La Rochelle a very pretty harbour town is the second most visited town in France after Paris. Rochefort a maritime town steeped in history. From Fouras take a boat trip to the unspoilt island of Isle d'Aix. Montagne is a charming port on the estuary where you can dine by the water savouring ‘Fruits de Mer’. Cognac several well known cognac houses are open to the public and give guided tours around their distilleries. St Emillion one of our favourites a very picturesque town the home of excellent red wine.

Blaye an old garrison town well worth a visit. Royan has lovely beaches, an interesting yacht harbour .and good indoor food market. Talmont a pretty estuary village with an interesting ancient church.

Bordeaux an impressive city with good shopping and possibly the worlds most important wine centre. A new tram line takes you into the city from the outskirts, avoiding the traffic!
