Luxury 2/3 Bed Country Villa With Large Private Pool, Secluded Garden And BBQ

Overview

Property

Updated: 22-Jun-2016
Villa in Riba de Mouro, Moncao, Costa Verde, Portugal - Tranquil Location On The Outskirts Of Peaceful Rural Village, 5 Minutes Walk To Secluded River Pool

This modern 2/3 bedroom wing within a stylish villa is set on the outskirts of a small hamlet in the foothills of the stunning Peneda Geres National Park. Walk along the wild trails of the mountain, among the wild horses and roaming long horn cattle typical of this region.

Nearby you can walk in winding undulating tracks amongst beautiful, ancient hillside villages. See years of ox cart wheel tracks cut deep into the small granite tracks, almost lost in time, traditional houses built into giant rocks and Roman roads and bridges still in use today, over two thousand years old in this stunning undiscovered area of Portugal. A rare chance to see locals still working the land as their forefathers did centuries ago.

This is a single apartment within the villa which we let therefore the property and the grounds are private to the holiday guests. It is a 2 / 3 bedroom apartment, comprising of two large double bedrooms which sleep 5 and a smaller single room which is optional. The main villa itself is usually only occupied when the owners visit, normally out of season, to carry out maintenance etc.

The property has large, bright airy rooms with quality finish and has central heating. There is a large indoor log fire/ BBQ in kitchen which is on the ground floor. 2 large bedrooms with option of 3rd bedroom if reqd, bathroom with shower and a cosy sitting room with glass door to large veranda with fantastic views over the fertile valley below on the top floor. Home cinema with picture projected onto sitting room wall with complete surround sound bringing the big screen cinema into your sitting room. Internet and Sat TV. Large lawns and rose garden. 11 x 4 heated private pool. Laundry and toilet/shower next to kitchen on ground floor. Large games room with table tennis and darts.

About the Owner

We love the outdoors, cycling, walking and helping out the locals, harvesting the grapes and corn. We could not think of a better place to stay, a real step back in time. The weather and scenery are fantastic and the local people are so friendly and welcoming, always ready to help if needed. We really enjoy the quality of life as it should be without the stress and complications of modern day living. To relax by the pool and enjoy the barbeque is such heaven surrounded by beautiful scenery and sunshine!

Highlight of holiday was meeting Jim, Eileen and Zoe and especially Poppy.Weather was beautiful and the area was fantastic. Will return.

Local bars, shops etc very friendly and very helpful to us non speaking Portuguese. Local people were a joy to meet & share time with. Will be back next year.

Trevor and Maggie Grice and Paul and Judy. Wolverhampton.

Everything was excellent for us as a family with five children. Private pool fantastic. Plenty of space outside for the kids to run around on the well kept lawns and around the pool.

Loved the privacy, riverpool with the huge rocks my older boys loved to dive off, cafe Cruzerio, Home Cinema big hit with the teenage children.

Many thanks, Mary and Joe O'Dwyer.

Had a wonderful stay. Highlights were the playroom, your wonderful daughter and your kind hospitality. Steak in St Antonio brilliant, great prices, fantastic chef.

Kids loved the garden with loads of space.

Will be back.

Mecheline and Bram, Netherlands.

Beautiful place, away from the crowds and hustle and bustle. Loved exploring the mountains, with the abundance of wildlife and endless trails. The weather and scenery was fantastic. Pool and BBQ area was perfect and really enjoyed dining outside in the evening sunshine.

Gorgeous views

We had a fantastic stay. The pool was superb and the views stunning. We loved our meal in the restaurant in San Antonio. The villa was clean and spacious. We loved eating at the table on the balcony at the very top of the villa. The views both at breakfast time and at sunset were sensational. The local villagers were very friendly. We had wonderful weather all week. Although the villa is up in the hills in a very rural setting, it was only a 15-minute drive from the main road. We went on day trips every day. We would highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: I am delighted that you had a fantastic holiday in our villa. Everyone gets blown away with the amazing scenery. We were so lucky to find such a special place being so rural and yet have all the amenities on the doorstep and with picturesue principal towns as close as 20 minutes away. Glad you made it up to the St Antonio Restaurant, we love it there and Fernando, the chef makes you feel so welcome not to mention the wonderful steaks.

Location

From the Owner

We love this area which has so much to offer up on the outskirts of the National Park. The Villa is on the outskirts of a small hamlet so we have both the peace and tranquillity of the countryside but yet also close enough to the cafes and stores to walk so we are not too remote. We are 10 miles equidistant from the two main towns and also both of these towns are on the border to Spain. The countryside is similar to the west coast of Scotland being quite rugged and green but it is alot warmer, drier and not windy. It is easy to drive from the UK, catching the ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth and sailing overnight to Santander in Spain with an 8 hour drive through beautiful scenic countryside on quiet dual carriageways to Moncao or Melgaco in Portugal.

Special interest holidays:

There is a large outdoor pool and small children's pool across the bridge from Moncao (20 mins drive) in Salvaterra Spain also a large play area with lots of slides, swings and climbing equipment. There is also an outdoor gym park across the fence where the adults can try their hand at the huge range of outdoor exercise equipment. There are also a small farm with various animals, birds and a horticulture display.

For those wanting to become a bit more involved with the locals and their lifestyle we can arrange for you to assist in the harvesting of the grapes or the corn, depending on the time of year.

Either on foot or by bike you can explore the countryside in more depth and off the beaten track where you may encounter the wild mountain ponies and the long horn cattle grazing in the mountains. You could even cycle along the beautiful eco-piste from Moncao to Valenca along the riverside, picnicing along the way. Why not visit the nearby riding school and go trekking.

Coast/Beach:

Vila Praia De Ancora an hours drive away is within a 50km stretch of safe, clean beaches, some sandy, rocky, surfing, family or romantic. Portugal offers the best warm surfing in Europe with over 500 miles of consistent waves and sunshine with surf school and lifeguards. Peneda Geres National Park is a 5 mins drive. Beautiful streams, rivers and waterfalls run through the valleys. Walk over miles of untouched countryside, try a cheeky dip in the many secluded river pools.

Further Details:

Families with young children are very welcome . Suitable for mountain biking, hiking, bird watching and nature enthusiasts. Also nearby there is quad bike experiences, white water rafting, horse riding, surfing, fishing or maybe you want to have a go at grape picking. Just let us know what your requirements are and we will do our very best to accommodate. There are four small grocery stores, three cafes/bars and a butcher nearby and we also have daily deliveries of fresh bread and fish. There is also an all weather football pitch 10 mins walk away. This area is renowned for its festas (traditional music, costumes, singing and dancing) weekly throughout the season with fantastic fireworks day and night. Often there is BBQ food (no burgers just real meat) and wine on offer, all free. The locals are very friendly, family orientated people and include their children in all their outings and celebrations. They will make you all very welcome and are very helpful people. Eating out here is very cheap. You can eat out here in various restaurants (our local being a 10 minute stroll down the road). Very popular is the "plate of the day" (usually choice of three main dishes) soup, bread, main dish with rice and chips, dessert, wine, coffee and a spirit and all for around 7 euros! and that will be more than you can eat. Don't order for your child just ask for another plate (it's expected). Should you want to chill out by the pool all day without the hassle of cooking then you may call the local restaurant and have your meals delivered to your door. A morning coffee and fresh pastry or cake will cost about one euro. You may also book a dinner and dine with a local family, a unique chance to experience the traditional way of life of the Portuguese, enjoy their food, wine, their cosy open fire kitchens and of course their charming company. Prices available on request.

Facilities

From the Owner

We love sitting outdoors on the upper veranda and look out over the small fields which surround us and watch the world pass by. There is so much to see each day as the locals tend their crops and lovingly care for their vines. The views are fantastic down into the valley which is lush and green with the river snaking its way along through the pastures below and the forests above teaming with wildlife. We can cycle and walk from our doorstep and spend hours enjoying the countryside and abundant wildlife or we can enjoy the back garden where we have the BBQ and swimming pool and is totally secluded from the front of the villa. We have an excellent butcher shop, open 8am to 8pm, with an english speaking assistant, a 15 min walk away. The local restaurant, run by two Portuguese sisters, is only a 10 minute walk away, serving excellent lunches and dinners at a very reasonable price and are open every day except Sundays. There are also two excellent restaurants 10 km away up the mountain.
