About the property

Mill Lodge in Mesnil Clinchamps, Calvados, Normandy, France - Gorgeous Location Set In Peaceful Village But Just Five Mins From Busy Village Of Saint Sever

Enjoy a warm French welcome at our beautifull Mill cottage set in a really pretty French village on the outskirts of Vire and Saint Sever.

The cottage is a lovely 2 bedroomed cottage suitable for 5 persons. The cottage is set in 6 acres of land which boasts a good sized fishing pool. It has a seperate enclosed garden and decked area with swimming pool . The Decked area has a number of sunloungers and umbrellas plus a covered pagoda with wicker furniture, this is great for reading and relaxing in the shade. Just below the swimming pool in a seperate area of the garden is a dining area with a large permanant BBQ for al freco dining. .

The Mill is situated in the middle of the village and is only a 30 second walk from a bar, restaurant The village also has bakers for all those cakes, bread and croissants, Seven minutes walk from the cottage is a wine shop selling the most beautiful wines and norman cidre. The owner makes his own sparking wine which is like champagne. He also sells Calvados which is the aperetif of our area, this should be drunk before a meal to aid digestion. The village also has a very busy hairdressers which is very popular with our guests.

There are beautiful walks around the village and as the village is only situated five minutes from St Sever it is ideal to sample the local bars. the forest is also in Saint Sever where there are wondeful lakes and forest walks that are well signposted. there is also a lovely farmers market every Saturday morning which is just five mins from The Mill.

Just 10 minutes from the village is Vire this is a large town with its famous clock tower. In Vire you will find many shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. If you want a nice treat have a meal at The Hotel de France.

There is also a new chinese buffett, Mcdonalds, Bowling Alley, Aqua Centre and cinema which shows English as well as French films. Just opposite the cimema is a great bar and cafe which is ideal for a drink and snack before the film. There is so much to see and do in the area our guests just seem to run out of time.

About Julie Williams

We are a family business, Simon, Julie Tom and Ellie

own Gite Holidays Normandy. Simon and Tom renovate the properties and Ellie and Julie do all the interior design and bookings. We love living in France

and have lived here now for nearly seven years.

Julie Williams purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Julie Williams chose Calvados

Whilst we were on holiday in my friends cottage, we saw this property for sale, We were totally wowed with how lovely itwas and the village location suited us perfectly, it was only three houses from a lovely bar

and just one minute from the bakers, the other thing that attracted us was it was only 10 minutes from Vire and 4 minutes from Saint Sever. We also loved the terraces and the view of the grounds at the back. It is two houses each with their own entrances so perfect for a gite. Simon and Tom also loved the fishing pool.

Since owning the property we have added a new garden with a swimming pool plus a pony ménage. We also have sheep Lolly and Pop who love being hand fed.

What makes this cottage unique

We think Le Moulin is quite unique, it offers a bit of everything. You look out from the terrace and see beautiful views, horses and fishing pool, at the side of the property the gite has its very own garden and a play area for the children We also have sheep at the cottage which love to be hand fed by the children. The terrace has its own stone BBQ and seats and sunloungers, ideal for having your breakfast or that late night drink the views are lovely.

If you love animals and the countryside this is the place for you, Our younger guests love looking after the rabbits and feeding the donkeys, also fishing in the pond.

The bar up the road is offer free drinks to our guests the food is really fantastic, if Mum and Dad want to chill out and have a meal we offer a babysitting service, or an Art and Crafts/ French lesson for the little ones.

For 2017 we are working with other bars/cafes/attractions to save our guests money.

Fantastic winter stay at Moulin Lodge

  • 5 of 5

A great winter stay in the Beautiful French countryside with my family. We arrived to a lovely welcome pack including French wine and cider and fresh Coffee that was bubbling away when we entered the cottage. Julie and her family were very helpful in telling us where to go and what to see although we spent most of our time relaxing in front of the log burner which was a real treat. We visited The restaurant in the village twice during our stay, as the set menus were lovely and at a great price. My childrens highlight of the stay were the two friendly donkeys in the field behind us, Who they gave carrots to every morning. An overall lovely break and we Will definitely be back again.

Lovely village but property need some tlc

  • 3 of 5

The house is split into two and if you are two families together one of you will get slightly less quality accommodation. Some effort has been made here but a long time ago and although the house inside was nice the kitchen could have done with a deep clean and the outside has been left to fall into disrepair. The swimming pool didn't get cleaned for the two weeks we were there, the fences are falling apart and forget pony rides or boat ride on the lake (there's a hole and my husband fell in!). That said, there were plenty of fish and the kids still had a good time. Village remote but pretty and nearby bar was great. Photos do not show the best side of the house. WiFi sketchy. Julie and husband did come when we called and were very helpful but the details advertised do not accurately reflect the property and they need to do some maintenance here.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your feedback.I am very sorry that you found certain areas of the Mill not to your liking, but I would like to raise a couple of points, the guests that had just left before you arrived had used the pool considerably and hence it had become cloudy with sunproducts as soon as we realised this it was treated and was back to normal within a few hours, I also understand that one half of your party was not happy because she had the smaller of the cottages, this I am afraid I can do nothing about. The outside of the Mill is a working farm with 4 donkeys and ponies plus sheep and rabbits at certain times with that amount of animals, straw, hay etc we are not able to keep the working areas like ornamental gardens it is not possible, our guests however have lovely terraces and swimming pool area where there are not animals permitted, If I had known about the boat or that you thought the kitchen was not cleaned I would of addressed this issue by asking my cleaning staff to return to the property. The Village is just a four minute drive to the next small town of Saint Sever and just !0 minutes from the larger town of Vire so I feel that it is not remote, I also feel that it would of been nice if you could of discussed these issues with me at the start of your holiday as you led me to believe that you had had a wonderful holiday at the Mill. Thankyou,

Lovely stay at Mill Logde!!

  • 4 of 5

A lovely relaxing time a Mill Lodge!! We all enjoyed the pool and the kids enjoyed exploring the grounds where they played with their kites etc. Julie was great in recommending places to go and eat and helped us out with a problematic car that we had. Nothing was a problem.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it as a holiday destination!!

We look forward to coming back and staying again soon.

Le Moulin

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time, though the weather was not very conducive to swimming which was a shame as the pool is lovely. A good size and sparklingly clean. The trampoline was much used though. We particularly enjoyed watching the various animals in the fields and all the birds opposite. Peacocks, turkeys, geese, chickens etc. Really rural life in the French countryside.

A couple of small problems were dealt with very promptly and Julie also arranged a vet appointment for our dog which was very helpful. I was very pleased that she was prepared to offer ten day stays so we avoided the Saturday crowds on our return.

I would recommend it highly.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here. We had 4 adults and 7 children across the two properties and everyone enjoyed themselves. We thought the children would be occupied by the swimming pool and a bit of fishing, but the fishing was the best attraction with everyone wanting to fish more and more. We must have caught well over 20 fish on the first day. We went to some nearby beaches and they were desolate and lovely with the sea being surprisingly warm. We ate out in the local town most nights which is a short drive away and there is a lovely boulangerie in the village.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your lovely review. We are so happy that you had such a wonderful time at Moulin. It was fantastic to see your children enjoying themselves so much with the fishing and of course taking such good care of Ronnie the Rabbit. Hope to see you all again in the future. xx

Delightful stay in the Mill

  • 4 of 5

We had a really good time. Julie is very helpful and seems to know just about everything about the area and what is going on as well as being very friendly, always available and extremely helpful -= can provide something if wanted.

The Mill is comfortable and large with good, separate space if a bit of quiet is wanted (by grandparents for instance!). Plenty of parking.

The children were very happy with the swings, pool, donkeys and boat on the lake. We caught some fish too.

Barbecue is good. Main house lounge and kitchen is big enough to seat 10 of us easily.

Area is quiet and peaceful .... an occasional car or tractor.

Would recommend any time!

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

We are able to offer free pony rides for children, plus help with fishing.

Horesriding lessons can also be arranged at the stables.

Coast/Beach:

The glorious beaches of Granville and Julouville are only 40 minutes drive away. The D.Day landing beaches are approx 1 hour away. Granville is a cosmopolitan town with many ‘Tres Chic’ boutiques. Why not stroll along the harbour and try one of the many delightful fish restaurants. If you fancy a day trip to Jersey or a tour around the Chanel Islands you can catch the ferry in Granville. The ferry is very good value and the shopping in Jersey is wonderful.

Travel:

The nearest Airport is Dinard. Ryan Air operates flights from Stansted, Bristol and EastMidlands. The distance from Brouains is 1 hour 20 mins. Car hire is available, however, airport transfer is possible, this is worthwhile if you are planning a cycling or walking holiday at the cottage. In addition Taylor Made holidays can be arranged including Taster days and French Tuition. Alternatively if you wish to bring your car then the nearest ports are Caen or Cherbourg.(1 hour approx).

Distances:

Soudeval 5 mins drive. Vire 10 mins drive. Mont Saint Michael 40 mins drive. Granville 40 mins drive.

Further Details:

The pretty willage of St Sever is only a 5 min drive away from the cottage and on Saturday morning it holds a lovely farmers market where the local farmers come to sell therir delicious normandy produce, the food is very fresh and tasty but also excellent value Tuesday mornings selling lots of delicious Normandy produce. Also visit the huge Depot Vente in Saint Sever which sells 2nd hand furniture, ornaments and other fascinating things. The town of Vire is only 10 mins drive which is a large town boasting many fantastic shops. Why not try a trip in November and December and visit the quaint Christmas Markets. The restaurant is open both for lunch and evening meals.

In the village of St Sever which is 10 minutes from the cottage there is a large open air swimming pool and again many bars. You cannot however, come on holiday to Normandy without visit to Mont St Michel which is approx a 40 min drive away. The Mont has been named by the Guardian Newspaper as one of the top 10 romantic places to visit in the world. I don't think they are wrong. If you have teenagers or a feeling like a daredevil why not visit Hackets Adventure Park. You could try Bungee Jumping from the viaduct that was designed by Gustaff Eifel (guaranteed to blow away your cobwebs).
