About the property

Romantic Belle Epoque Villa with Pool, Tennis (shared:2 courts) in Hyeres, Var, Provence, France - Beautifully Restored Part of a Romantic Belle Epoque Villa with Idyllic Gardens

This advertiser joined Owners Direct in October 2006, and has advertised this property with us since January 2008. 8 years successful letting guarantees your security when booking. If in doubt, check directly with Owners Direct.

The villa is in an exclusive, private domain of 65 hectares (162 acres) overlooking the sea, with 2 excellent tennis courts. Miles of clean, sandy beaches and sparkling clean water. Hyères is one of the few 19th century resorts on the Côte d'Azur to have preserved its original charm: the old medieval heart of the town, with a number of market squares, towers and a castle, is surrounded by the Victorian houses and gardens that were built for the large English population in the second half of the 19th Century. The outstanding climate - very dry, warm but with a light sea breeze - continues to contribute to the charm of this very typical French Mediterranean town. Our self-contained and very private ground floor accommodation offers 2 bedrooms, an elegant living/dining room, shower room (separate wc), well equipped (small) kitchen, 2nd summer kitchen under the pine trees by the pool with BBQ. Exclusive use of very private pool (12x6m).

The very thick stone walls keep the accommodation cool, even in the middle of summer. Outside: Private garden patio next to kitchen, second tiled patio (also for your exclusive use) under the pine trees by the pool. Outdoor furniture (not shared): 4 sunbeds, 8 dining chairs, 2 dining tables. Forming part of the private domain are 2 excellent tennis courts. Pool alarm. Utility Room: Kitchen also includes our own olive oil, plus vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar, tea, coffee, fresh herbs (laurel, thyme, rosemary in garden). All cleaning products + personal soap, toilet paper, provided at beginning of stay. Hair dryer, iron, & board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are included. Beach mats are also provided. Maid service upon request. Other: Second summer kitchen, totally private, under the pine trees by the large pool. Weber BBQ. Dining furniture. Boules behind the pool.

At last: my idea of luxury!

  • 5 of 5

Singing cicadas, a small pine forest, lazing in the sun next to a huge pool - all to ourselves - oh dear! time to drag ourselves away to another idyllic spot in the garden for a glass of champagne - total privacy - ths is my idea of pure luxury.

The house itself is gorgeous, fully equipped down to the latest designer fans (which we didn’t use - the stone walls kept the interior just right). We stayed 7 idyllic days in August and couldn’t believe the difference in tempo between here and just down the hill, at the beaches. These are as beautiful as you could hope for, with miles and miles of white sand, but unless you want to be surrounded by all of the cote d’azur it’s best to avoid them after midday and before 4pm. We slipped into a geared-down routine of late breakfast on our upper terrace - flowering oleander, lavander and hibiscus, with a view of the sea - then an hour or so on the beach where the kids snorkelled and chased fish - then a quiet time by the pool, lunch on the lower terrace (you can chase the sun or the shade, as you prefer - there were 4 different dining areas, just for the four of us), reading or playing boules on the boules court (of course!) next to the pool.....when we had rested enough we played tennis before a last swim, shower and dinner. The local restaurants were good, especially kind to children, lots of fresh fish. We used the BBQ here for grilled meats and fish. Excellent shopping everywhere - supermarkets open until 9pm, markets full of stunning local produce - a Luna Park which had the kids enthralled - we even caught the ferry to two of the islands - very beautiful but also crowded in high summer.

Unanimous vote: the best holiday yet and we’ll be back next year!

Coast/Beach:

Miles of sandy beaches ("Almanarre") are a pleasant 2km by foot, 4 km by car. The 3 islands off the coast are accessible by regular ferry transport. Wind-surfing is available at Almanarre.

Travel:

The Toulon-Hyères International Airport is situated 4 km to the southeast of the town centre, on a sandy plane near the coast. There are scheduled flights to and from Brest, Bordeaux, Brussels, London, Lorient, Paris, Rome, Rotterdam and Stockholm. It takes about 10 minutes to drive to this airport from our property.

We are also equidistant (approx 90mins) from Nice and Marseille airports.

A car is recommended.

Further Details:

Things to do - Some suggestions among many:

* Explore the coastline on foot by following the shore (start on our private beach) or one of the many paths along Giens.

* Take a ferry to Porquerolles or Port Cros, unspoiled islands with wild flowers & 300 species of birds

* Go to the local markets and rediscover what food used to taste like.

* Long, lazy lunches (and dinners) outside: by your private pool or on your terrace

* Lose the extra calories by cycling on the cycle path that follows the coastline

* Antique and bric-a-brac hunting at Hyères, Toulon, St Tropez, .

* Bump into Princess Caroline at chi-chi St Tropez.

* Learn to paint sunflowers.

* Picnic in the chestnut forests outside picturesque Collobrières.

* Walk to the top of our hill and let the Var and the Med take your breath away.

* Marseille, 1 hour away, is France's most exciting city, and home to the world's best bouillabaisse. Totally renovated port area with cafés and restaurants, art galleries, good shopping.

* Nice, 1 hour away, is a lively city still showing its Italian origin, with fish markets, restaurants, art galleries, museums, great shops.

* Go wine-tasting at the local vineyards (wine domaines at Hyères, Pierrefeu, La Crau)

* Day trips to Monte Carlo, Nice, Cannes, Aix-en-Provence, Italy.

* Children like to make a list of all the animals and insects they see, sometimes keeping a diary with drawings, lists, leaves and petals to remind them of Provence.

* Just read..... and read....... and read.
