About the Owner

Mike and I retired from teaching at the end of 2002 and moved to the property at the beginning of 2003. As an art teacher and artist Mike was drawn to the proportions of this 19th century property. For Chris it was an opportunity to continue her love of the French language. In Bournemouth we had welcomed language students into our home for a number of years. We were just continuing the work here in Normandy.

Now ten years plus later we are still going strong and have added 'The Lodge' to our accommodation, a small gite for four.

Chris now leads the local choir and I am almost free of DIY, just the green house to go!

Beautiful, welcoming B & B

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 nights here at the tail-end of our trip to Normandy. The owners Mike and Christine were warm, welcoming and easy-going. The standard of decor and the room facilities are superb, the prices are great and the location ideal for exploring the Cotentin peninsular, within easy reach of the D-Day beaches and museums. Thoroughly recommended!

I spent three nights during the D Day 70 commemorations. I found the owners to be very friendly and the standard of accommodation to be very high. Good value for money! I would definitely stay again!

Owner's Response: Thank you Charlie, you were a great guest. We try very hard to make all our guests welcome in our home. Don't forget that apart from the D Day beaches this part of Normandy, La Manche, has lots of other attractions! Sporting activities include walking cycling horseriding sailing golf etc. See you in La Manche!

From the Owner

We had no previous knowledge of this part of Normandy before buying the property, but realised almost immediately the advantages of living in a village and within striking distance of both east and west coasts. We have come to know and enjoy the area enormously for it's history and varied scenery. On the one hand there are the marsh land with their flora and fauna, then there are woodlands and last but not least the beaches. On the east coaast there are the historic Dday landing sites with museums and cemeteries and on the west coast the bathing, sailing and exploring beaches.Easily accessible by major but quiet roads from Caen or Cherbourg.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

We offer painting and drawing activities on site and in the locality. Sessions led by Mike Clench, previously an art teacher in England.

French lessons offered by Chris, a qualified language teacher.

East coast beaches (D-Day landing beaches) are between 20 and 40 minutes drive away. They are flat and sandy.

The west coast has sandy coves with rocky pools and beautiful views to Jersey and is about 30 minutes by car.

The headlands further north are rugged and indented with small bays.

A car is necessary to visit the area. The port of Cherbourg is 40 minutes by car, Ouistreham (Caen) 80 minutes and Le Havre 2 hours.

The nearest airport serving the British Isles is Dinard, a drive of 2 hours.

Sainte Mere Eglise is 8km from Pont L'Abbe,

Cherbourg 30km.

Bayeux, for a not to be missed visit to the tapestry is 45 minutes away and in the other direction, also not to be missed, is Le Mont St Michel, which will take 2 hours in the car.

The Natural Marshland Park surrounds us and its visitors' centre is 12km away. In the season a boat will take you up the river and point out the flora and fauna.

Further Details:

The village has all you may need in the way of banks and shops. For a more extensive choice Carentan and Cherbourg can provide.

The village has 1 restaurant but there are many others to chose from serving excellent menus of local seafood and other local specialities.

For the sportsman and woman, there is the possibility to ride, sail or sand yacht, play tennis or golf in the area. There is a small local swimming pool, but larger facilities particularly for the children at St Lo and Cherbourg. There are many walks both coastal and country with the possibility of taking a tour on a donkey.

There are a number of interesting fairs throughout the year, including the Medieval Fair at Bayeux in July, the Candlemas Fair in February at Montebourg and our very own Joan of Arc Fair here in the village in May.

There are museums of all kinds. In Sainte Mere, Carentan and Utah and Omahah Beach you can learn all about the part the Americans played in D-Day.At Colleville-sur-mer is the large American War Cemetery. In Bayeux and Arromanches you will find museums dedicated to the English and Canadians.

Other museums show how the French lived during the war, and other local history including cider and calvados making.

There are chateaux and manor houses and abbeys galore!
