About the property

B&B in Picauville, Nr. Sainte Mere Eglise, Manche, Normandy, France - Near D-Day Beaches

The property dates from 1850 and was fortunate to escape damage in 1944. It sits back from the main street of the village behind a courtyard available for guest parking. Steps lead up to the first floor and into the large entrance hall. The living room, dining room and guest kitchen are on this floor. A staircase takes you to 2 bedrooms on the 2nd floor and a further 3 bedrooms on the floor above. Behind the house is an extensive terrace and garden, available to guests.

About Michael and Christine Clench

Mike and I retired from teaching at the end of 2002 and moved to the property at the beginning of 2003. As an art teacher and artist Mike was drawn to the proportions of this 19th century property. For Chris it was an opportunity to continue her love of the French language. In Bournemouth we had welcomed language students into our home for a number of years.We were just continuing the work here in Normandy.

Now ten years plus later we are still going strong and have added 'The Lodge' to our accommodation, a small gite for four.

Chris now leads the local choir and I am almost free of DIY, just the green house to go!

Why Michael and Christine Clench chose Manche

We had no previous knowledge of this part of Normandy before buying the property, but realised almost immediately the advantages of living in a village and within striking distance of both east and west coasts. We have come to know and enjoy the area enormously for it's history and varied scenery. On the one hand there are the marsh land with their flora and fauna, then there are woodlands and last but not least the beaches. On the east coaast there are the historic Dday landing sites with museums and cemeteries and on the west coast the bathing, sailing and exploring beaches.Easily accessible by major but quiet roads from Caen or Cherbourg.

What makes this guest house unique

The village itself has everything you need in the way of commerce. Butcher, baker etc. A restaurant within walking distance. Coast, historic sites, museums, none are more than 1 hour away except for the Mont St Michel which needs one and a half hours drive! Although in the centre of the village we have ample parking space and quiet gardens to the back of the property.

We spent 2 nights here at the tail-end of our trip to Normandy. The owners Mike and Christine were warm, welcoming and easy-going. The standard of decor and the room facilities are superb, the prices are great and the location ideal for exploring the Cotentin peninsular, within easy reach of the D-Day beaches and museums. Thoroughly recommended!

D Day 70

I spent three nights during the D Day 70 commemorations. I found the owners to be very friendly and the standard of accommodation to be very high. Good value for money! I would definitely stay again!

Don't forget that apart from the D Day beaches this part of Normandy, La Manche, has lots of other attractions! Sporting activities include walking cycling horseriding sailing golf etc. See you in La Manche!

Notes on accommodation: Our guest kitchen on the ground floor is available to guests and has fridge, microwave and tea and coffee making facilities. The house benefits from central heating. Children and animals are made most welcome. Outside: To the back of the house is a sunny courtyard and a walled garden provided with garden furniture, table tennis, pool table and barbecue.
