About the property

FR3083 Font Remy, Mortagne

Welcome to Font Remy - the former Manor House of Le Petit Village, a peaceful hamlet 2km inland from the pretty fishing village of Mortagne-sur-Gironde, just south of the seaside resort of Royan. The property has been tastefully converted into four very spacious, fully equipped houses sleeping 10, 10, 6 and 6 and is set in a walled garden of 2 acres with views of the vineyards beyond. There is a 15 x 8m fenced and heated swimming pool, plus swings, table tennis, pool table, boules pitch, badminton, plenty of space for ball games. Tennis, go-karting, horse riding, golf, sailing, boat hire are all available locally. Mortagne has bakers, butchers, a small supermarket and bars and restaurants overlooking the boats in the port. Numerous sandy beaches are 20-30 minutes drive away and there are many historic towns to visit within an hour or so - La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Saint Emilion, Cognac, Saintes. For kids there is the best zoo in France (La Palmyre), an excellent Aquarium at La Rochelle and an indoor aqua park in Jonzac. Great for families - or groups of families holidaying together.

Toddler friendly - this is a great base for a family holiday in France - and we have cots, highchairs, stairgates and an essentials baby pack, available at no extra charge. We have kids dvds, toys, games and books too and new for 2016 will be a new climbing frame and swing set.

Wifi, large screen satellite tv (French and English) in each house.

Please see our website for more details and pictures.

This is a great area for cyclists (good cycling countryside around) and bird watchers (especially down in the estuary in Spring and Autumn). A great place to come and relax.

About Cathy Thomas

Hello! We are Huw and Cathy Thomas. We live in England with our two children and golden retriever. We all love France, the relaxed way of life, the markets and the restaurants.

Cathy Thomas purchased this house in 2003

Why Cathy Thomas chose Mortagne-sur-Gironde

We bought Font Remy back in 2003 because we love France and wanted to have a place where we could holiday regularly, not too far from the beaches and local markets, within walking distance of a village with bars and restaurants but with a sense of getting away from it all. The feeling of space in the gardens is just so relaxing. There are lots of places to visit within an hour or so drive - Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Royan, Cognac, St Emilion, to name a few. There is a different beach for every day of the week - the nearest (20 mins) are sandy, safe with great beach bars. We love hanging round at Font Remy during the day - walking to the boulangerie for croissants, eating lunch on the patio, swimming and then heading off to the beach late afternoon for beach cricket and a glass of wine.

What makes this house unique

We wanted to offer not just a well-furnished house, but also one with plenty of activities for children as we have two ourselves. The first thing we did was heat the pool (v. important for me!) and then, in 2008, we built the games barn and put in table tennis, table football and a pool table. There is satellite tv too plus lots of books, board games, dvds and videos too. In 2009 we also added WiFi so Huw can work when he is out there and so we can stay for longer!

Our kids love playing cricket and badminton in the garden (when they are not in the pool). Huw loves challenging anyone who will listen to a game of boules and I love lying on my sunlounger reading my latest novel whilst sipping a glass of pineau (the local speciality).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Rose was stunning, spacious and probably the best equipped holiday home we have ever stayed in. The design was perfect with 5 double bedrooms and nearly every evening on the patio watching the sun go down and enjoying the BBQ. It was safe for our 3 year old granddaughter who loved the pool, and playing with the children in Wisteria!

We had a day in Bordeaux, and we also all visited Saintes and Blaye. Several picnics on various beaches, and easy cycling into the village and locally. We walked along the estuary, ate pizza in the harbour and visited the thursday evening wine tasting. And not to mention the weather - warm and sunny most of the time.

Any small housekeeping problems were passed on to Grant, the manager who had everything in hand.

We all agreed it was a fantastic place to stay.

One of the things which distinguish the houses at Font Remy from most other gites is the marvellous feeling of space, both inside and out. All the houses are generously equipped. All houses have individual terraces with pergola, barbecue, table and chairs and sun loungers. The games barn has a pool table, table tennis and table football, board games and books - great if you want them to get out of the sun for a while. In the garden there is a boules pitch and badminton set and plenty of space for cricket and football. Large walled garden of 2 acres. Plenty of room for ball sports. Football and cricket set provided. Boules pitch. Swings. Heated 15x8m swimming pool with roman steps into shallow end. All properties have their own patios and garden furniture, plus gas BBQ. Games barn with table tennis, pool table and table football. The pool will be heated from 1st May to 31st October. Heating can be arranged outside these times for an additional charge.

High-quality accommodation in beautiful surroundin

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed with everything at Rose Cottage. As a multi-generational group of ten, we felt that a spacious and comfortable property was of importance to us and Rose excelled our expectations; having four bathrooms, two of them ensuite, was a definite bonus. The pool is a very good size and the surrounding garden provides both sun and shade.

The property was immaculate on arrival and the owners obviously pay attention to detail when it comes to furniture and equipment. As a large group and with three young children we appreciated the dishwasher, washing machine and drying facilities. The kitchen was particularly well-equipped.

The property manager was on hand if we needed her and, even though we were only there for a week, she cleaned the pool during our stay.

We had such great weather that we didn't stray far from Font Remy, but we did spend an afternoon at a lovely beach in St Palais sur Mer about 40 minutes away - good beachside cafe/restaurant too. Foodwise the supermarket at Gemozac ten minutes away provided everything we needed and there were local shops in Mortgagne if we ran out of anything - excellent boulangeries too for our daily croissants! We had a barbecue most evenings then headed to the games room for pool or table-tennis.

We have already recommended Font Remy to lots of friends. In our eyes, it was a great find!

Another wonderful stay at Font Reemy

  • 5 of 5

Another wonderful 2 week holiday staying in Rose at Font remy.

Our second trip to Font Remy, this time with my sister and her family as well (6 adults and 4 children). This property is the best we have stayed at in the area over the last 6 years. Even though there were 10 of us it never felt that way. Big open rooms which were appriciated by all when it was above 38 degrees in the middle of the day on several days.

Bedrooms are big and having 4 bathrooms makes it fantastic as the kids can have their own.

The pool is fantastic and nevr felt crowded even when all 4 houses were cooling off with more inflatables than we could count!! The children said it was there best holiday ever and insisted that we book for 2017 (which we have done) as there is still so many things for us to explore in the area.

It is an hour from La Rochelle, 45 minutes from the Atlantic coast where we had amazing fun in the waves on a beautiful golden beach, plus there are smaller beaches closer (15 mins).

They loved the pool which is ideal for all ages with a good sized shallow end to give the younger ones confidence but also a good deep end for diving and jumping in, the pool is also fenced so little ones can not get in on their own. The houses sit in a huge walled/thick hedged garden which allows adults to relax as the kids from all the houses play together knowing they are safe.

The games room was frequented most evenings by young and old as well as the front lawn making an excellent cricket pitch in the evening for the adults to get together for drinks and a chat while umpiring the dads and kids playing.

Font Remy delivered everything we wanted; amazing accomodation, fantastic pool, other families with children so you get a break yourself!! The children will never get bored with so much to do! Which means you get time to relax yourself...

Lovely property in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous properties in a rural location, but within walking distance to the local village with shops & restaurants. We spent week 1 in Wisteria & week 2 in Rose. Both were lovely properties and very well equipped. The pool was excellent and our toddler enjoyed all the children's toys that were provided for use & loved the play barn. A truly relaxing holiday for all. Highly recommended & hope to return soon.

Excellent house, wonderful service too

  • 5 of 5

I thoroughly recommend this property. Information in advance was helpful and comprehensive. Directions to the door were very welcome. The house is cool, beautifully decorated , and very well equipped. The pool is large, clean and secure. The garden is spacious & well-maintained. But it's the little things that show how the owners and manager go the extra mile...quality bedding, gas bbq, information about the area, changing the swing for a baby swing, & the tea/coffee/etc in the cupboard. This property has spoilt us, for all future holiday homes can not compete with Rose! Thank you to all for a wonderful stay!

Ideal for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

I would definitely recommend this as a good place to take a family holiday. There is plenty to do on site whether it is the Play Barn for children, the pool for swimming or the rear patio area on which to relax with a book and a glass. Good fare is available at a wide range of restaurants in the area. The property was clean and well maintained as was the extensive garden area around it. The surrounding area offers plenty for bird watchers, walkers, those with an interest in history and those with an interest in products of the vineyard. A visit to the covered food market at Royan was one we recommend. We look forward to going to stay at Font Remy again.

Beautiful area - filled with vineyards and sunflowers. Quiet country lanes - great for walking and cycling. Bikes can be hired locally if you don't want to bring your own. It is a 5 minutes cycle or 20-30 minute walk into Mortagne in the mornings to collect your bread. In the evenings it is great to go down to the port for a glass of wine or beer. There are bars and restaurants overlooking the pretty port. We recommend visiting Bordeaux, La Rochelle, St Emilion, Saintes and Cognac - and exploring the coast with it's gorgeous sandy beaches. And the stars at night time are amazing!

20 mins drive to the 3 small sandy coves in Meschers. All have good snack bars where you can enjoy a beer or kir royale while watching the kids play. 25 mins drive to Saint Georges - fabulous long sandy beach with high wire zip park in the pine forest behind. Blue flag. 30 mins to very long beach at Royan. Great for teenagers. 40 mins to St Palais (our favourite) - sheltered cove, good coastal walk and two very good bars on the beach. 45 mins to Cote Sauvage - great surfing.

5 hours drive from Saint Malo. 7 hours from Calais (tunnel). 1.25 hours from La Rochelle airport (Easyjet, Flybe and Ryan air). 1.25 hours from Bordeaux airport (Easyjet and BA). 1.5 hours from Poitiers airport (Ryanair). Car hire is essential. Local taxi service is available.

La Rochelle 1.25 hours. 1.25 hours Bordeaux. 25 minutes Cognac. 20 minutes Saintes (roman town with amazing amphitheatre). 1.25 hours Saint Emilion. 25 minutes Royan. 10 minutes Talmont. 5 minutes Mortagne (for local provisions).

Further Details:

Lots to see and do. Over 15 Michelin recommended restaurants within 30 minutes. Great place for a relaxing holiday but with plenty for the kids to do.
