About the property

FR3083 Font Remy, Mortagne

Welcome to Font Remy - the former Manor House of Le Petit Village, a peaceful hamlet 2km inland from the pretty fishing village of Mortagne-sur-Gironde, just south of the seaside resort of Royan. The property has been tastefully converted into four very spacious, fully equipped houses sleeping 10, 10, 6 and 6 and is set in a walled garden of 2 acres with views of the vineyards beyond. There is a 15 x 8m fenced and heated swimming pool, plus swings, table tennis, pool table, boules pitch, badminton, plenty of space for ball games. Tennis, go-karting, horse riding, golf, sailing, boat hire are all available locally. Mortagne has bakers, butchers, a small supermarket and bars and restaurants overlooking the boats in the port. Numerous sandy beaches are 20-30 minutes drive away and there are many historic towns to visit within an hour or so - La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Saint Emilion, Cognac, Saintes. For kids there is the best zoo in France (La Palmyre), an excellent Aquarium at La Rochelle and an indoor aqua park in Jonzac. Great for families - or groups of families holidaying together.

Toddler friendly - this is a great base for a family holiday in France - and we have cots, highchairs, stairgates and an essentials baby pack, available at no extra charge. We have kids dvds, toys, games and books too and new for 2016 will be a new climbing frame and swing set.

Wifi, large screen satellite tv (French and English) in each house.

Please see our website for more details and pictures.

This is a great area for cyclists (good cycling countryside around) and bird watchers (especially down in the estuary in Spring and Autumn). A great place to come and relax.

About Cathy Thomas

Hello! We are Huw and Cathy Thomas. We live in England with our two children and golden retriever. We all love France, the relaxed way of life, the markets and the restaurants.

Cathy Thomas purchased this house in 2003

Why Cathy Thomas chose Mortagne-sur-Gironde

We bought Font Remy back in 2003 because we love France and wanted to have a place where we could holiday regularly, not too far from the beaches and local markets, within walking distance of a village with bars and restaurants but with a sense of getting away from it all. The feeling of space in the gardens is just so relaxing. There are lots of places to visit within an hour or so drive - Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Royan, Cognac, St Emilion, to name a few. There is a different beach for every day of the week - the nearest (20 mins) are sandy, safe with great beach bars. We love hanging round at Font Remy during the day - walking to the boulangerie for croissants, eating lunch on the patio, swimming and then heading off to the beach late afternoon for beach cricket and a glass of wine.

What makes this house unique

We wanted to offer not just a well-furnished house, but also one with plenty of activities for children as we have two ourselves. The first thing we did was heat the pool (v. important for me!) and then, in 2008, we built the games barn and put in table tennis, table football and a pool table. There is satellite tv too plus lots of books, board games, dvds and videos too. In 2009 we also added WiFi so Huw can work when he is out there and so we can stay for longer!

Our kids love playing cricket and badminton in the garden (when they are not in the pool). Huw loves challenging anyone who will listen to a game of boules and I love lying on my sunlounger reading my latest novel whilst sipping a glass of pineau (the local speciality).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Spacious, well equipped, 'character' property, perfectly equipped, with all amenities, great location, beautiful massive pool, lovely maintained gardens front & rear, big covered drive.

In addition, a big airy well equipped games room that gave the children hours of fun, as did the DVD library & the collection of age appropriate books & toys (we enjoyed playing pool).

I was asked by Nikki to suggest improvements, & there is a comments book, but frankly we cannot think of any. The essentials e.g. olive oil, salt, washing products, were even present.

There is also an easy to use gas barbecue & we were delighted after travelling to find some red wine awaiting us. The location is peaceful but not deserted & is often maintained.

Cathy (owner) & Nikki (local agent), are Brits but with detailed knowledge of the area & are very helpful (providing info sheets, swift instructions, & timely local recommendations).

Cathy told me most of her business is repeat business, which is totally credible. I know we will certainly be looking to return, & frankly the service we've received has been faultless.

Thank you Cathy & Nikki

One of the things which distinguish the houses at Font Remy from most other gites is the marvellous feeling of space, both inside and out. All the houses are generously equipped. All houses have individual terraces with pergola, barbecue, table and chairs and sun loungers. The games barn has a pool table, table tennis and table football, board games and books - great if you want them to get out of the sun for a while. In the garden there is a boules pitch and badminton set and plenty of space for cricket and football. Outside: Large walled garden of 2 acres. Plenty of room for ball sports. Football and cricket set provided. Boules pitch. Swings. Heated 15x8m swimming pool with roman steps into shallow end. All properties have their own patios and garden furniture, plus gas BBQ. Games barn with table tennis, pool table and table football. The pool will be heated from 1st May to 31st October. Outside these dates additional charges will apply if heating is required.

Fabulous Font Remy

  • 5 of 5

Although the weather wasn't as good as expected, we had a most enjoyable stay in Wisteria. The house was wonderfully equipped and very comfortable with every amenity for a good holiday.

As we have stayed in this area before, we didn't explore very much, just relaxed and enjoyed the local wines and food. We had a lovely meal at Chez Gigi and also enjoyed the pizzas at Chez Feu Feu.

A stay at Font Remy is definitely recommended.

Nicely presented and furnished. Good quality.

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to escape and relax - but with lots of attractions and things to do within an hour's journey - so was perfect for our group of retired teachers. There is something for everyone - although quite a few of the group were simply happy to stay at Font Remy - table tennis championships and pool competitions - and a great selection of dvds. Wisteria is a lovely house - nice to have such a beautiful bathroom - and a spacious kitchen.

Great relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a great holiday at Fort Remy. The swimming pool and the games room were a big hit with the kids. Beautiful countryside with quiet roads surrounding the gites, perfect for biking. There are several vineyards just a few minutes away and plenty of fun day trips. Would recommend and hope to return one day.

Fabulous gites and fabulous holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Just back from our sixth summer holiday to Font Remy - the gites are of an exceptionally high standard and the pool/gardens are stunning. It's just a short cycle/drive through the vineyards/sunflower fields to the nearby village for croissants/baguettes to enjoy back on the patio. Good choice of restaurants dotted around the port which is a lovely setting for lunch/dinner. Can't fault it - it ticks all the boxes for us.

Beautiful area - filled with vineyards and sunflowers. Quiet country lanes - great for walking and cycling. Bikes can be hired locally if you don't want to bring your own. It is a 5 minutes cycle or 20-30 minute walk into Mortagne in the mornings to collect your bread. In the evenings it is great to go down to the port for a glass of wine or beer. There are bars and restaurants overlooking the pretty port. We recommend visiting Bordeaux, La Rochelle, St Emilion, Saintes and Cognac - and exploring the coast with it's gorgeous sandy beaches. And the stars at night time are amazing!

20 mins drive to the 3 small sandy coves in Meschers. All have good snack bars where you can enjoy a beer or kir royale while watching the kids play. 25 mins drive to Saint Georges - fabulous long sandy beach with high wire zip park in the pine forest behind. Blue flag. 30 mins to very long beach at Royan. Great for teenagers. 40 mins to St Palais (our favourite) - sheltered cove, good coastal walk and two very good bars on the beach. 45 mins to Cote Sauvage - great surfing.

5 hours drive from Saint Malo. 7 hours from Calais (tunnel). 1.25 hours from La Rochelle airport (Easyjet, Flybe and Ryan air). 1.25 hours from Bordeaux airport (Easyjet and BA). 1.5 hours from Poitiers airport (Ryanair). Car hire is essential. Local taxi service is available.

La Rochelle 1.25 hours. 1.25 hours Bordeaux. 25 minutes Cognac. 20 minutes Saintes (roman town with amazing amphitheatre). 1.25 hours Saint Emilion. 25 minutes Royan. 10 minutes Talmont. 5 minutes Mortagne (for local provisions).
