About the property

Watermill near Grazalema Andalucia - Situated in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park

The mill, El Zurdo a restored 17th century watermill is situated in an outstanding valley in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park between Grazalema, a picturesque and lively pueblo blanco (approx 6km) and the dramatic historic town of Ronda (approx 15km). El Zurdo, meaning left handed, was the only 1 of the 13 mills in the valley which turned anti-clockwise. It sleeps up to 6 people and is in a secluded rural position at an altitude of 600m private and separate from the nearest neighbour El Pastor

,. The mill has been sensitively restored and retains most of its original features such as the mill race, grinding wheels and crane gantry. It is simply furnished in a rustic fashion and was featured in the Spanish magazine 'Casa y Campo'. El Zurdo is partially built into the cliffs of a small gorge and has a natural plunge pool and waterfall which is perfect for swimming in on hot summer days

The accommodation is simple and typical of farmhouses and mills in the area; not much has changed from 50 years ago when they were worked and lived in. We have installed what we consider to be the basic necessities (electricity, running water, flushing loos, showers, refrigerators, cookers) but have tried not to let them spoil the very special Spanish character.

To reach the mill, you first follow a short bumpy track into the parking area. You then cross the river over a small bridge and walk down the path to the house.

You enter the sitting/dining room and two steps up take you into the mill room where you will find the grinding wheels and crane gantry. The latter was used to replace worn stones, which were then used for flooring.

The kitchen is a step down, which is equipped with refrigerator, cooker, breakfast table, worktops and double sink

There are two bedrooms upstairs, each containing a double and a single bed. The shower room and toilet are outside across the patio. From there a path takes you to the river (which powered the mill), where a waterfall has created a natural plunge pool.

This mountainous area is perfect for walking, cycling and bird watching. Scops Owls, Golden Oriels, Griffon Vultures, Black Kites and Bee Eaters have all been spotted close to the mill. Guided walks are popular with visitors.

Stunning place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We love something out of the ordinary and this place is out of the ordinary. Our thing is beautiful countryside and walking and we had both on the doorstep. The house is hidden deep in a river valley which once supported 14 watermills and is pretty much as it was as working mill - if you're looking for luxury probably not the place for you - but adequate in terms of facilities (cooking, shower, etc). It has a fantastic atmosphere and the setting is just stunning - we simply loved it. What more can we say!

Notes on accommodation: As El Zurdo is built of stone, it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Due to uneven surfaces and the location of the property, young children would need to be supervised. Outside: The original cobbled pathways around the mill form part of the medieval drovers road system in southern Spain. The patio has table and chairs and a built-in barbecue. A natural plunge pool and waterfall are situated yards from the mill. The mountain water is always cold. Access to the plunge pool is shared with El Pastor, another house situated below the mill. There is a parking area close to the mill at the end of a short, bumpy track. The mill is a short walking distance from the parking area. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen provided, properties are cleaned weekly or after each letting. Towels are provided.
