Restored Farmhouse with Private Pool and Panoramic Views

Overview

Property

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
Farmhouse in Castel Rigone, Umbria, Italy - Secluded and Peaceful Location in the Heart of the Umbrian Hills

The farmhouse sits in nine acres of countryside and has been restored to the highest standard using traditional materials. The 12m x 6m pool has an infinity edge looking over the valley to the south-west. The property is totally secluded and private with access from the village of Castel Rigone 2.8km away via a country track. Inside, the house is fully furnished and extremely well equipped with everything required for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. Many of Italy's most beautiful towns such as Cortona, Arrezzo, Siena, Assissi etc are within easy driving distance. The local village of Castel Rigone is a typical Umbrian hill-top village of largely medieval stone houses with breathtaking views of Lake Trasimeno some eight km distant. The village contains basic amenities such as small supermarket, pharmacy and two bars. Nearby Passignano on the shores of Lake Trasimeno contains a range of excellent restaurants and there is a regular ferry service to the islands on the lake.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Dear Bill

Charlie and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday at your beautiful home in Castel Rigone. The house is so beautifully comforatble and the views were breath taking. We did very little other than relax by the pool as the weather was very hot. It was idyllic!"

"Dear Bill

We had a truly wonderful break in your beautiful home. Alfio, despite our lack of Italian was extremely helpful in settling us in, the position of the house is perfect, we spent hours just gazing at the vistas both front, back and sides.

You were quite right in respect of peace, not a peep from any quarter. We had an aerial display one morning by (I think) a hunting Goshawk, stunning."

"Hello Bill And Margaret,

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at

your beautiful Casa Elceto with Norman and Angela. The facilities were more than

adequate and very charming. We could have stayed another week! June even

took a dip in the pool."

Two weeks of beauty and quiet in Elceto

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two wonderful weeks in Elceto and enjoyed it very much. The house is beautiful, inviting and fully equipped. The owners have left well planned instructions so that we felt comfortable using every area of the house as well as the infinity pool and the pizza oven outside. We had a chef come and teach us a cooking class in the well equipped kitchen which was a fabulous experience. The views are stunning and sunsets were truly beautiful. There are hiking paths nearby and the gravel road (about 3 km) from the house to the charming town of Castel Rigone is about a 30 minute walk. The owner was responsive to our questions and made us feel very welcome.

AMAZING!

  • 5 of 5

Julie summed it up nicely! A 5-STAR property with all the comforts.

We are a Canadian family of 6 and had enough space for each of us. The pictures truly do not do the house justice as it has been made warm and welcoming with furnishings and pottery, fiction and non fiction books to read. We have rented many Villas over the past 5 years and this one is on our repeat list. I dare say we want to rebook now for next year for fear of waiting too long and missing out.

We arrived well after supper (Due to flight delay and Google Maps misleads) and Alfio was waiting patiently road side. The welcome package of Prosecco and basic necessities he brought was heaven after our long day. Marcello the local store owner stayed open for us so we could pick up things we would need for our evening.

The grill and pizza oven were well used and late night swimming under the stars was a daily event to end our evenings after long days of touring Cortona, Siena, Florence (go by train!) and other local areas.

Thank you Bill & Margaret for this amazing week and sharing your "paradise" with others to enjoy.

Stunning!

  • 5 of 5

The photographs simply cannot do this home justice. It is without question the nicest Italian villa we've stayed in (and we've stayed in many). From the spacious, cool, clean interior to the acres of garden with its superb infinity pool with unparelleled views, and the wood fired bbq and pizza oven. There are simply not enough superlatives to describe Elceto. It is remote so privacy is ensured whilst still being ideally located for jaunts to some of the most beautiful towns and villages in Umbria. There are local markets a-plenty (get there early) and restaurants in abundance. There are plentiful fish restaurants around the lake, and our particular favourite is Trattoria Del Pescatore in Passignano. (booking recommended) But to be honest, you'd struggle to get a bad meal in this area. But for us, unquestionably, the highlight is cooking at home on the forno, watching the sun set, the fireflies flutter and with a hefty glass of red! I'm almost reluctant to leave a review as I want to keep this plot of heaven our secret!!

Most memorable family vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at the villa during the summer of 2014. Every aspects of the vacation surpassed our expectations and was absolutely outstanding. Bill was extremely helpful with all his instructions and recommendations, which we are extremely grateful for. The views are unbeatable - waking up to the infinity pool and panoramic views were just breathtaking.

While the villa itself is secluded allowing for the utmost privacy and tranquility, the location is ideal for making day trips to other areas which gives it the perfect balance for an unforgettable vacation.

We made day trips to areas like Florence, Pisa, Cortona - visiting Montepulciano is also a must!

The villa and the grounds are extremely well maintained. Couldn't have asked for anything better - would love to visit again. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a scenic, tranquil getaway in a gorgeous rustic Italian setting.

Umbrian paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a gem! Lost in the rolling countryside is the lovely Elceto farmhouse. Well equipped for all eventualities, tranquil, gorgeous views and sunsets. All supported by the diligent Alfio and his family.

The perfect holiday if you want to get away from hustle and bustle.

Good restaurants and a charming local shop cater for most eating needs. We wanted a tiramisu but the shop didn't have any so the enterprising shopkeeper called his wife and the next day she had made us a huge tiramisu which lasted three days! They don't do that at Sainsbury's.

Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

A gorgeously located property on the top of a hill with breathtaking panoramic views. Lovely place for recreation. The large terraces, the infinity pool and an own olive grove as well as the surrounding forests invite to linger. The house is spacious, stylishly furnished and has a professional kitchen. The house equipment offers all you could ever need.

Location

From the Owner

We bought the house in Umbria because of the rural nature of the area, the peace and tranquility and the fact that it is less heavily "touristy" than Tuscany. Having said this however we are only just over the border from Tuscany and many places of interest such as Cortona, Arrezzo etc are only a short drive away. The local people in common with most Italians are extremely friendly and hospitable and the produce available including food and wine is invariably top quality. Over the years we have become friends with many families in the area which we regard as a particularly special privilege, especially with Alfio and his family who look after Elceto when we are away. Another friend Gianni who built the wrought iron gates to the property was the last person to be born there.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Perugia at 40 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Umbria lies in the heart of Italy so a drive to the coast would take up to 3 hours, however a 15 minute drive takes you to Lake Trasimeno and the numerous small towns and villages on it's shoreline. Passignano in particular is a delightful town with numerous restaurants and bars.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Perugia (Ryanair from Stansted) which is a 45 minute drive away, however Ancona, Bologna Forli and Rome are only a 2 hours drive. Use of a car is essential due to the track to the house from Castel Rigone.

Distances:

The nearest village Castel Rigone is 3 km up the track but notable towns such as Assissi, Perugia, Cortona etc are within an hour's drive and Siena within 2 hours.

Further Details:

Basic necessities can be obtained from the village supermarket, however for larger shopping needs there are large supermarkets, hardware shops and department stores in nearby Magione. Village markets such as at Magione and Tuoro are open on various days to supply top quality local produce. The are 3 "Cantinas" close by where you can buy excellent local wine at a range of prices direct from the producer!

Facilities

From the Owner

Elceto is in a rural setting off the beaten track and it is therefore extremely quiet and peaceful. We enjoy 360 degree views and no matter how many times we go to the house we never tire of the views over the valley in front and the hills beyond. There are around 60 olive trees close to the house and a stroll through the olive grove is a very happy and rewarding experience. It takes around 10 minutes to drive up the track to the village of Castel Rigone which is a beautiful typically Umbrian hill top village with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside and lake Trasimeno and also has a magnificent church. The music festivals in the village and also at nearby Preggio have provided some memorable moments too. In short Elceto is a magical, beautiful oasis of tranquility.
