About the Owner

We are a recently retired couple with a grown up family and grandchildren living in England.

Susie is a painter and John says he is a gardener and as Puglia is 'the garden of Italy' both of us find plenty of opportunity to hone our skills.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Quotes from our visitors' book 2013.

'Casa Settembre has been the perfect place to relax, unwind, and forget our hectic lives back in the UK. John and Susie are wonderful hosts - unobtrusive, yet always welcoming when we had a question. We would highly recommend Casa Settembre to any of our friends wanting to explore this wonderful part of Italy' (Alison, Chris, Rebecca and Ben)

'We have stayed in many villas over the years and this has been voted the best by the whole family. It has everything you need to make a lovely, relaxing family holiday including excellent hosts!' (Liz, Mark, Isaac and Esme)

'We have had a wonderful two weeks. We have done less exploring than we first planned, preferring the immediate and tranquil surroundings of Casa Settembre. We cannot fault it. The swimming pool is magnificent.' (Steve, Clare, Henry and Felix)

Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time in Italy and we chose to do a 2 centre holiday.

We visited Rome for a couple of days, crazy but excellent. Then we wanted a week of relaxation.

And if you are looking for shear relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life then John and Suzies Trulli is absolutely the place.

The Trulli is gorgeous, loved it.We wanted to stay in one of these traditional houses, and we were not disappointed.

It is a home from home. Everything you need for a great holiday is provided.

A really well equipped kitchen, again, everything you need. The living area is very comfortable we a great choice of books(one of which I have since purchased since I came home)

We spent a lot of time by the beautiful pool, and If you are traveling with children you will struggle to tear them away from here. It's a great size with a diving board to boot!!

John and Suzie are the perfect hosts, always there if you need any support about the local area, or suggestions for restaurants etc. Genuinely lovely people(with some great bread making skills, thank you)

We had such a wonderfully relaxing holiday in your Trulli, thank you.

If you are reading this review and considering going to John and Suzies Trulli, we absolutely recommend you do. You can't fail to come away relaxed and wanting to move to Italy.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you had such a relaxing holiday and enjoyed staying at Casa Settmbre. We think that Puglia really is a very special area and clearly you did too. We still have guests swimming in the pool (mid October) in this little slice of paradise. Thank you for leaving the villa so clean and tidy. Come back soon!

A wonderful, countryside oasis!

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful week on this property. The traditional style vacation home was immaculate and well equipped with everything we needed. There was much attention to detail and we felt like we were at home! John and Suszie were gracious hosts and very helpful when asked about exploring the area. We are so grateful we found this little jewel. Thanks again!!

A stunning villa, absolutely perfect for a family holiday or a trip with friends. Beautiful location too, nice and rural and the nearby town was a fun day out as well.

Property was well looked after and we had no problems whatsoever. If you're looking for somewhere to escape to then this is ideal!

What an amazing place....

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fantastic week in Casa Settembre with our two teenage sons and have to agree with all of the previous comments made, this is truly an amazing place to stay and un-wind. The villa is beautiful, far bigger than the description suggests, immaculately clean and extremely well equipped. The welcome pack, including home made bread and local wine was a very nice touch. The villa is located a few kilometres from the centre of Martina Franca in a very quite, peaceful rural area. John and Susie were most welcoming, the perfect hosts, on hand to offer friendly advice. The large pool, table tennis table and the wifi kept our boys entertained. The gardens around the villa and pool are beautifully kept. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: We are really pleased that you enjoyed your holiday. It's great that we have such lovely families coming to stay. Yes, many guests have said that the villa is far bigger than they expected from the description and photographs. Maybe we need bigger photographs.

Quiet retreat close to an interesting town

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 2 weeks at this comfortable house, which has been developed from a typical trulli dwelling. The house is full of character with high domed ceilings with arched supports and very thick walls .It is well furnished and has a well equipped kitchen, with a large patio for outside eating. It was clean and well maintained. Most of the outside space was available to guests, and we had exclusive use of the pool and most of the garden. The owners, John and Susie, had their own garden area, entrance gates etc. and so we only saw them when needed. They were most helpful with local information but were not intrusive. There was a lovely welcome pack on arrival, including home made bread, local wine, and provisions for an evening meal. The pool and pool area were large and private. The location of the house, several kilometers from Martina Franca, meant that there were lovely walks in wooded surroundings in the immediate vicinity but was close enough to the town for the market, shops and the evening stroll in the most interesting town centre. We thoroughly recommend this holiday venue.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. Yes, Martina Franca is a very interesting town, steeped in history and adorned with beautiful architecture. The intriguing maze of narrow lanes in the old town hide superb restaurants. We particularly love walking in the nearby forest in spring and autumn. It's also great to walk for miles along the beaches when they are virtually deserted out of season. It is now mid November and the days are still warm and sunny. Yes, we love it here.

Absolutely Perfect.

  • 5 of 5

The villa is exactly as described and it really does provide five star comfort. It is spotlessly clean, immaculate in every respect and extremely well equipped. The photos don’t really do it justice, it is much larger than we expected. The extensive gardens and wooded areas are glorious. It really is an oasis of tranquillity. We found it very restorative. What better way for stressed out commuters to recover their equilibrium. The water in the magnificent pool sparkles a clear duck egg blue. The trulli in this part of ‘The Shire’ are magical. We half expected to meet Bilbo Baggins striding down the country lane outside the villa.

Our hosts, John and Susie, are extremely discreet and unobtrusive, in fact we only saw them when we wanted help with local knowledge. They clearly know the area well and were very helpful.

There are loads of excellent restaurants in and around the elegant town of Martina Franca. Our favourites were Torre di Angelucca and Osteria del Coco Pazzo. We also loved the Gran Caffe as it is a perfect place to watch the world go by whilst sitting in the sun having our morning coffee.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. We also think that Martina Franca is elegant and it is really vibrant when it comes to life in the evenings. There are so many wonderful restaurants that it is always difficult to decide which one to choose. We are glad that you found the villa quiet and peaceful.

Location

From the Owner

We moved to live permanently in southern Italy in 2006 and chose Puglia for its friendly people, delightful trulli, peaceful rural life and wonderful beaches. We love it here. The local wines from Salento and Maduria as well as the fresh fish, cheese and meats and the abundant, local vegetables and fruit of our area are delicious. The famous, regional dish of fave and cicoria is not to be missed! With easy flights into the two main airports of Bari and Brindisi we often see our family, two grown up sons and two grandchildren. Our grandchildren can never wait to be here. We are not quite sure if we are the attraction or the pool is! Our property is on a plateau, the Murge, well above the summer baking plains of Taranto and Fasano so we invariably have a gentle, cooling breeze.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bari and Brindisi at 50 Miles Nearest Barpub : Martina Franca at 4 Miles Nearest Ferry : Brindisi at 50 Miles Nearest Golf : Savelletri at 15 Miles Nearest Train : Martina Franca at 4 Miles Nearest Motorway : Taranto at 14 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Martina Franca at 4 Miles Nearest Beach : Lido Azzuro at 18 Miles Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Lovely beaches and lidos either on Adriatic coast - about 20 miles away, or Ionian Sea, again about 20 miles away.

Travel:

Car essential. Two international airports, Brindisi or Bari, both within easy distance. Car hire available from either and car can be collected from one and dropped off at the other. Some guests find flights to Rome or Naples more convenient and drive from there.

Distances:

The centre of Martina Franca is about 3 miles away. It is a beautiful Baroque town where you can sit with a coffee or a wine and watch the world go by. There is a magnificent cathedral, excellent restaurants and lovely shops. Alberobello, a must, is about 10 miles away. There are wonderful walks through the Bosco delle Pianelle nature reserve 6 miles away.

Further Details:

Martina Franca boasts small supermarkets, fruit, vegetable stalls, pizzerias and a wide range of restaurants in town as well as excellent shopping for stylish Italian clothes and shoes. One can dine in any one of the many restaurants in Martina Franca cheaply and extremely well. For example the top end restaurants, with food all locally sourced, will cost around €30 per head including a litre or two of the wonderful, local Primitivo wine. One of the best pizzarias in Italy serves piazza by the metre with a choice of three flavours on it and charges around €10. Good fun and great for children. There is a weekly enormous, bustling market on Wednesdays full of every conceivable type of goods; clothes, shoes, meat, vegetables, fish and dairy goods. There is a beautiful, newly renovated hotel and restaurant a few minutes drive or walk up the road. For those who enjoy exploring the historic centres of the local hilltop towns or a visit to the vast Pianelle Forest is a must. The forest is particularly wonderful in Spring and Autumn. We can provide maps and compasses. Sturdy shoes are essential. You can hire bicycles from the visitors' centre for just €3.50 per hour. Abandoned farmsteads and ancient trulli, alongside caves that were inhabited by stone age man and more recently local brigands, can be discovered along the tracks. A large water park is about ten minutes drive away. There is a really good go-kart track which is also about ten minutes drive away. To explore the enchanting Valle D'Itria electric bicycles, with a maximum speed of 25 kph, can be hired in Martina Franca. Cycle hire and horse riding are available for the more energetic. The whole area is steeped in history, mystery and legend.

Facilities

Although in the country, we are five minutes by car from one of the loveliest towns, Martina Franca with its many restaurants, shops and cafes. The villa has cool, tiled floors throughout, two trullo cones and high barrel vaulted ceilings to keep you cool. Clean white walls, crisp white sheets and fluffy white towels help to keep guests comfortable. The villa has been renovated to a very high standard and is very well equipped. Our secure parking, boule court under shady trees, outdoor table tennis and a bigger than usual private pool, means that we offer our guests the best facilities.
