Apartment in Villecroze, Salernes, Provence, France - Peaceful Location with Beautiful View to Rear

The property is on the third floor of an old village house which was formerly a monastery. It was tastefully updated and converted into apartments approx. 20 years ago. The apartment itself is on 2 levels with an interior staircase and a small roof terrace with views over the surrounding countryside. Although central to the village it is very peaceful and the other apartments are generally quiet. The whole apartment is simply but tastefully furnished, giving an ideal and comfortable base for getting to know this area of Provence.

My husband, Peter, and I live in Kings Langley, Herts but spend as much time as possible in Villecroze in the Var, South of France.

We are both busy people but are now of an age where our work commitments are lessening so we are able to spend holidays of a reasonable length in Provence and also to snatch the occasional long weekend.

The village is a dream. We were delighted by its charm and the atmosphere. This lovely apartment is everything one can wish for a happy, comfortable and memorable stay. We will remember especially the view from the roof. Such holidays could be everlasting.

French delight concealed in Villecroze old town

This apartment really was a delight - as was the village and the area of Provence it provides access to. It felt charming and French although had up-to-date amenities including a new washing machine. The fact that this is the third year I have stayed in this lovely apartment says a lot. Its location is perfect for pottering round the village, getting fresh bread in the mornings and relaxing in the village square over a glass (or several) of wine in the evening and a meal.

There are several small towns within easy access and the wonderful Roman river to swim in at Salerne, or you can venture a little further afield and drive to the lakes (less than an hour) for more swimming and some amazing views of the Gorge. You can take a pedalo or canoe up the gorge. We went earlier than usual this year so the heat was not so intense, therefore we did several walks including an amazing walk high above the Gorge du Verdon.

Coming back to the apartment, it was perfect for what we wanted and I have already asked to go back next year. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

La Gardenia

This a beautiful flat in a tranquil village. The flat itself is very comfortable with all necessary equipment you could wish for your stay. We love the roof terrace - a great place for a glass of wine at any time...!

The description of the flat was accurate, the property clean and all instructions were clear.

The village is small (plus point!!) and has a couple of bars and restaurants in the square, and others in walking distance.

The Grottes are well worth a visit as are the Grottes and the Gorge du Verdon.

I believe the greatest compliment about a place is whether you would return there. We never tire of going back to the flat. It is a great place to unwind.

I recommend it unreservedly.

Owner's Response: The apartment is in an old village building and has many features typical of the period and style. It is not a modern box so do not come here if that is what you want. Do come if you want a typical Provence residence with some quirky features. We look forward to receiving your enquiry.

perfect combination

The combination of this atmospheric appartment and the village of Villecroze is quite delightful.

The apartment is well equipped to either self catering or use as a base to explore the surrounding countryside. Most mornings and evenings you can see swallows wheeling around and in the evening watch the sun set behind the hills to the west.

The village is beautiful. A large square with a boules pitch, shaded by plane trees and overlooked by restaurants. Another 100 metres and you are in a very nice park with a backdrop of caves and a waterfall. Suffice to say that we have stayed there for the last five years.

Location

From the Owner

I bought the apartment in October 2004, having had to sell the village house (a few hundred yards away) which I had owned since 1986 with my first husband, who had sadly died suddenly in June of that year. My daughters and I could not bear the thought of not having a base in Villecroze as it has a very definite charm as a village and we have many friends here. Hence the purchase of the smaller and more manageable apartment. My second husband immediately fell in love with the village when he visited it for the first time and was determined we should have a villa with a pool, which we bought in 2007. This is just outside the village. We have however kept the apartment, should we need it for extra accommodation or for rentals.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The beaches of the Cote d'Azur are under an hour away. Sainte Maxime and Frejus are attractive seaside resorts. There are shops and restaurants and a newly built port in Frejus. The beaches along this stretch of the coast range from sandy shores to rocky coves.

The Lac de Sainte-Croix has facilities for swimming and boat hire and is a calmer alternative to the busy coast. The Gorges du Verdon are breath -taking in their beauty.

There are various local pools and swimming spots.

Travel:

Toulon, Marseille and Nice airports are all within easy driving distance. Nice is approx. 65 miles (under an hour and a half).

A car is desirable in this village although it has all essential amenities.

Free parking is found in nearby car parks.

Distances:

The village is 20 kms north-west of Draguignan and is close to Salernes where there are plentiful shops and banks. Markets take place frequently in neighbouring towns and villages.

Further Details:

The village has a baker's, a general store, Post Office, antique shops, restaurants and bars. There is also a cash machine. Supermarkets are a couple of kms. away in Salernes. There is a Music Academy which arranges concerts in a local old chapel from time to time. Market day is Thursday. There are various Wi fi hot spots locally. In summer there are often village fetes and other activities.

Facilities

From the Owner

The apartment is very central to the village and is excellent for exercise as it is at the top of 46 steps. The views from the windows are stunning due in part to it being on the third floor and overlooking beautiful countryside to the rear. These views are even more spectacular from the small roof terrace. The village is typically Provencal and has everything one needs in the way of shops and restaurants. In the height of summer there are local fetes and other activities and often small bands playing locally in the bar. Local markets abound in Aups, Salernes, Lorgues and Cotignac. We enjoy meeting people who rent the accommodation if we are around (as we often are) and we invite them to swim and spend at least one afternoon with us if possible.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Electric heaters are used in winter and there are fans for summer. Outside space is very limited and therefore would probably not be suitable for children who wished to play outside, although the village generally is regarded as a safe environment which older children could be left to explore. The roof terrace is accessed from Bedroom 2 so small children might be safer sleeping downstairs. Sensible older children would be fine upstairs. The apartment has recently been redecorated and we have upgraded a number of the facilities including a new and comfortable settee and a flatscreen TV with French channels. There is also a DVD. This year we have converted the wifi to a hotspot system. Although not superfast, this seems to be a reliable connection for checking emails and using the internet via smartphone, laptop etc. Mobile reception is good. Outside: Roof terrace with small table and 2 chairs. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen and towels are provided. Cleaning takes place between bookings. Towels for swimming are not provided. Other: The roof terrace is small but is a useful outdoor space. There is a table and 2 chairs.
