House in St Georges des Agouts, Charente Maritime, France - Peaceful Location

Where the vines of Bordeaux meet those of Cognac, in the gently rolling hills above the Gironde estuary, our typically ‘Charentaise’ holiday home is waiting to welcome you. Outside, you will find a small garden in front of the house, and behind it a terrace for breakfast with steps leading down to a lawn and then to the pool, (which you will occasionally have to share with us who live just next door). The house is surrounded by fields of sunflowers, corn and of course vineyards. There is so much to discover in this calm and unspoilt part of France that you won’t have time to get bored. The Romanesque churches of Saintonge, fishing ports on the estuary, Blaye and its citadel and then there are all those wines to taste. We are situated only 10 mins drive from exit 37 of the A10 motorway, within easy reach of La Rochelle, Saintes, Cognac and Bordeaux, not forgetting the Atlantic beaches.

About the Owner

Claude, my french husband, and I came to this region in 1997 and now really feel that we belong here. We ran a B&B for 10 years and have now retired, just keeping the house next door as a gite. We love to welcome people here and to show off the beauty of the area and help you to get to know the regional specialities like the seafood, the cognac and the pineau. this part of France is not well known in the same way as the Cote d'Azur but has a distinct charm of it's own and a gentle rolling landscape with distant views of the Gironde Estuary. Claude was a journalist and has all the natural curiosity required for that profession, so between us we can give you lots of information and help you discover lots of things to do whilst you are here.

From the Owner

The house is a typical Charentais farmhouse, with high airy rooms full of light, wooden floors and simple farmhouse furniture. We bought the house for our four children to be able to come and stay during their university vacations as the house where we live next door was full of Bed and Breakfast guests. They love the house and spent wonderful times here with their friends. They played ping pong under the open barn late into the night, barbecued in the garden, and spent hours in the pool. When my son was married last year they all came back and slept in their rooms again, it was just like old times!

Large sandy beaches at St Georges de Didonne 40km which takes about 40 minutes. Further north is the Côte Sauvage with miles of empty beaches and waves to surf.

Gironde Estuary only 10km at Vitrezay, nature reserve, fishing and birdwatching plus boat trips. A large aquatic centre in nearby

Jonzac perfect for kids with the added attraction of a sauna, hammam and Roman Bath for parents, the water is naturally heated by local hot springs.


1 hour from Bordeaux and La Rochelle airports.

One and a quarter hours from Angouleme train station.

Car hire available at all the airports and the station. Approximately 7 hours from Calais, 5 hours from St Malo and Caen and 6 hours from Dieppe.

A car is essential in this part of the world.


Nearby villages, St Thomas de Conac, St Bonnet sur Gironde, and St Ciers du Taillon, all at approximately 4km have shops, bars and restaurants. Mirambeau, 8km has a large supermarket, banks and a weekly market on Saturdays. Jonzac has a large market, a chateau and aquatic centre, wavepool and thalassotherapie.

Saintes, La Rochelle, Rochefort and Blaye are all places with lots to see.

Further Details:

The estuary of the Gironde is a fascinating place for birdwatchers, and nature lovers, which can be explored by bike or on foot. The many Romanesque churches in the area are well worth discovering, and the nearby towns are steeped in history, with museums to visit and old streets to wander around. There is fresh local seafood to taste and of course all the local wines and cognac, you can even visit a local distillery and learn how cognac is made.

Booking Notes:
Please contact us either by email, telephone, or fax to make a booking. We shall ask for 25% of the total when the reservation is made and the total at least 2 weeks before the start date of your holiday? Upon arrival we request a deposit of 300 euros either in cash or in the form of a cheque against any possible damage to the property or breakages, this will be returned at the end of your stay if there are no problems.

Changeover Day:
During the months of July and August bookings run from Saturday to Saturday, at other times of the year we can be more flexible. Arrival time 4pm and departure time 10am.

Notes on prices:
Prices are for the property per week in Euros.
Please contact us for more information for weekend stays and long lets out of season. For groups of less than 4 people prices are negotiable, except during July and August.
There is a cleaning charge at the end of your stay of 30 Euros

Payments are made by transfer to our account in France. 25% at the time of reservation and the remaining 75% at least 2 weeks before the start of the holiday.

From the Owner

The two houses fit into the contours of the surrounding countryside, the views are breathtaking from the little breakfast terrace, out over the pool, to the vines and the distant woods. The local stone is easy to work, so most houses are built with stone quarried locally and the rooms are high-ceilinged with large windows and stay cool in hot weather.

  • Notes on accommodation: There is good heating for out of season use, including a wood stove, an open fire and efficient electric radiators. Outside: Private mature garden with shrubs and lots of flowers in front of the house with table and chairs and barbecue, with good shade. Small terrace behind overlooking the pool, sunny for breakfast and shady thereafter. Lawn with fig trees and steps down to the pool, which is shared occasionally with owners. Around the pool there are sunbeds, parasols and deckchairs in the shade. Utility Room: Washing machine, sink, iron and ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and all linen are provided. Towels are provided in quantity and can be changed when necessary. Linen can be changed once a week and a full cleaning service can be provided also. We do ask for 30€ towards cleaning at the end of your stay. Other: Wi-fi is available in the garden near the pool.
