About the property

Les Fougeres is in the hamlet of La Coupaudais, which is situated just outside the village of St Hélen in the region of Cotes d'Armor, Northern Brittany. Surrounded by beautiful countryside but also well placed for the local towns and cities. It is ideal for a relaxing holiday as well as being near to lots of interesting places to visit and explore. The medieval town of Dinan and port of Dinan is just 10 minutes drive with lovely cafes, bars and restaurants. The port of St Malo is 20 minutes away which lies at the mouth of the river Rance. The coastal seaside town of Dinard is approx 20 minutes drive and has magnificent beaches. Dinard also has an airport with daily flights to and from Stansted. The city of Rennes is about a 25 min drive, excellent for shopping with designer shops and wonderful restaurants. Rennes also has an airport with daily flights services by Flybe.

Our detached cottage dates from the 1900s and has been tastefully restored and decorated. It sleeps up to five people in three bedrooms

We can also provide a travel cot for a baby that doubles up as a playpen, there is also a high chair and stair gate to keep the little one safe.

The cottage has full central heating throughout and a small log burner which means the cottage is great for cosy nights in during the autumn and winter months.

The open plan lounge/diner has a pine dining table and chairs, sofas, and a television with video, DVD and CD players. The TV receives all free to view channels so you can keep up to date with your favourite programmes. There is a large selection of videos and DVDs and a wide range of family board games and books for all ages.

The well-equipped kitchen has been fitted with modern units, including a dishwasher. For cooking there is a large range-style cooker for those who want to practise their French cuisine skills! A large selection of quality kitchen utensils, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and serving dishes are provided.

In the bathroom there is a toilet, a large sink, a small bath and a shower cubicle. The bath also has a shower attachment.

Two of the bedrooms have pine double beds with matching wardrobes and side cabinets. The other bedroom has a pine single bed with a set of pine drawers. The baby’s cot can be placed wherever is suitable.

The large garden to the rear of our self-catering properties has been laid to lawn and contains a 15ft round, above-ground swimming pool. The garden is enclosed with gates at the entrances.

At the front of the cottage is a gravel driveway with a parking area to the side. Beyond the driveway is a two-acre meadow for all guests to roam and explore. This leads on to the Forêt de Coëtquen, where you can find mapped out trails to follow.

Our gite was a residential property until 1936. After that, it was used by a local farmer to store his cider barrels and apple press. We renovated it in 2004 and turned it in to a self-catering holiday gite that sleeps up to five people in two bedrooms. Like the cottage, the gite has full central heating throughout and has a large log burner, making it suitable for holidays all year round.

There is an open plan lounge/diner with a galley-style kitchen area. The focal point of the room is the large original fireplace.

The lounge area has comfortable sofas, while the dining area has a pine table and six chairs. The kitchen has fitted units with an integrated dual fuel cooker. There is also a refrigerator with a freezer compartment and a large selection of kitchen utensils, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and serving dishes.

As in the cottage, the television in the gite receives all Sky free channels. There is a DVD and video player and a selection of DVD's videos, games and books.

A patio door leads to the rear garden, where there is a garden table and chairs.

The bathroom has been fitted with a large shower cubicle and a sink. There is a separate toilet next to the bathroom.

One bedroom has a large oak double bed, with an oak wardrobe and side cabinet. The second bedroom has a pine single bed which can pull out to a double if required and a set of pine bunk beds with a pine wardrobe and chest of drawers.

For our smaller guests there is a baby bath, travel cot, stair gate and high chair if required.

At the front of the gite there is a gravelled area which incorporates an ancient bread oven, with a walled pergola.

Outdoor games and equipment are provided, such as a paddling pool, badminton, tennis, soft ball, cricket, footballs, frisbees etc.

We have also converted a small barn between the gite and cottage into a utility room that houses a washing machine, chest freezer, a sink, an airer, and an iron and ironing board.

Barbecue equipment and garden furniture are provided for the use of guests.

Little Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We (couple in our 50's) stayed in the gite with our dog Harvey for two restful weeks in September. From first booking the gite to our departure the service from the owners Jim and Jo was exceptional. En route to the gite we received a welcoming text from Jim advising that it was now ready. Upon arrival they were there waiting to welcome us and showed us around the gite they then left us alone to settle in. The gite is attached to the owners property in a beautiful stone house adorned with window boxes, there is a large secure garden at the rear laid to lawn, perfect for our dog. Jim and Jo's knowledge of the local area was so helpful; advising of local shops, bars, restaurants and good walks for us and our dog. Their dog Patch is the most chilled canine - so tolerant with our excited cocker spaniel. The weather was a bit mixed but when sunny it was lovely to sit out in the garden on the patio area. The gite is fully equipped with everything needed for a self catering stay and there is Sky TV should you want to catch up on the news. A separate utility with freezer, washing machine etc is also free to use for guests. We ordered a first night meal from Jo (quiche, salad and sticky toffee pudding) which was delicious as we didn't want to cook on our first evening. Les Fougeres is set in a small countryside hamlet of about 10 properties however large supermarkets, local bakers etc are only a ten minute drive away. At night there is no light pollution and you will be amazed at just how many stars you can see. Jim and Jo are the perfect hosts - not intrusive but always available for help and advice, they even book your dog's vet appointment for the return to the UK. We would have no hesitation in highly recommending both the hosts and the property to future holiday makers - you'll love it! (Thanks for the chutney Jo!)

Lovely quiet place to relax

  • 5 of 5

The place is great to relax and very quiet. You only might hear a car passing by sometimes and think that you are in a very remote place. On the one side this is true but on the other side it takes you less than 10 minutes drive to the very nice ancient town of Dinan and a big supermarket and less than 5 minutes to the motorway which brings you to St. Malo and to the coast.

Except for the owners and maybe guests in the other house they rented you won't see anybody if you don't want to.

Jo and Jim are great and very helpful. One minor defect with the shower we mentioned had been fixed immediately. The two give you the feeling that you are more a friend visiting than a guest who paid for.

The pool, table tennis, dart and the big lawns are perfect for children. It was no problem that your dog emptied their dog's feeding dish in their kitchen several times or that we dried our big rubber dinghy on their lawn.

The house was equipped like advertized. In general everything was perfect (except for the weather ;-) )

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

On arrival we were met by Joanne & Jim and made to feel very welcome. The cottage was very comfortable and had all the amenities for an excellent stay. The cottage is in an idyllic position with some fantastic walks and cycle rides. Should you prefer to sit and relax the lawns and garden are superb.

All the beaches and historic towns including the famous Mont St Michel are just a short drive away.

A fine supermarket with some wonderful foods fresh fruit and fish just 10 minutes away.

We had a very pleasant and rewarding holiday and we will certainly visit the cottage again.

Beautiful set and well equipped Brittany cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is a wonderful place for a restful holiday and we were fortunate in the Spring weather. The house is beautifully set and the sunny table in front (see the photo) keeps the evening sunshine which meant that a drink outside even on early May evenings was still a pleasure. It is a fantastic place for a dog as there are terrific walks on the doorstep and the immediate area around the cottage is well away from the road. Patch the resident dog is also very welcoming! Joanne and Jim, who Patch keeps an eye on, are tremendous and helpful hosts providing a wealth of information on the area and - particularly significant for us - great guides to local restaurants and markets. They arranged our visit to the local vet before returning to the UK with our dog and overall could not have been more helpful. This part of Brittany is a delight. Dinan the closest large town is wonderfully atmospheric and walks along the Rance from it are fantastic after lunch. Cancale on the coast is glorious and a must for anyone who likes oysters. The astonishing number of 'wild' sandy beaches along the coast, set in glorious scenery are fabulous. I am sure in July and August the roads and towns are more crowded but we found traveling about easy and pleasant. And the bright, cosy, cottage is a great place to chill out - very comfortable, clean and well equipped. The only thing I would point out is that the bathroom is on the ground floor and the bedrooms upstairs. This was not an issue for us but I can imagine it might affect those with mobility problems. We have rented gites, flats, cottages and houses in Britain, France, Italy and Spain for some 30 years and I would unquestionably put this one in the top 5%. We look forward to returning.

You can do as much or as little as you want. Some guests like to laze around in the gardens, taking lunch here and having a glass of wine or two. Others like to go through the entire tourism office catalogue of attractions. To help you find your happy medium, here are just a few things you can do in the area . . .

COBAC PARC is a day out for the whole family but the kids will especially enjoy it. There is so much to do, from swimming to mini golf. The park has a boating lake, bouncy inflatables and large water slides. If this all sounds too much you could just relax or sunbathe in the fabulous grounds.

MONT ST MICHEL is a small island about 45 minutes’ drive away, just across the department border in Normandy, and is an absolute must to visit. There you will find its celebrated Benedictine abbey. The monastic buildings date from the 13th century and are considered to be outstanding examples of Gothic architecture.

CHATEAU/ZOO are set in a beautiful wooded area with wonderful gardens, where you can walk around and picnic there. There are daily guided tours around the Chateau. The zoo contains exotic and rare animals from all over the world, and there are live birds of prey shows every day.

GOLF Dinard Golf Club is located in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, and was founded by a small colony of British residents living in Dinard at the end of the 19th century. Dinard Golf Club is set in a sensitive natural environment that is home to a number of rare animal and plant species. It has therefore been subject to a range of special protection measures, all of which are compatible with the game of golf.

DINARD is known as the city garden by the sea. It has a superb seaside location with magnificent beaches. You can visit the beautiful gardens where the plants and flowers are from the Mediterranean. Dinard is not the only lovely beach — the coast line is littered with them.

DINAN is one of the finest of all Brittany's towns and contains much of architectural interest. There are many half-timbered houses and Romanesque and Gothic churches. It also has an impressive castle, which overlooks the River Rance. You can walk down the steep and cobbled Rue du Jerzual to the port of Dinan. There you will discover an ideal place to eat al fresco as there are riverside cafes and restaurants to suit all pockets.

The most attractive part of Dinan is arguably its port, which is where you’ll arrive if you take a boat from Dinard or St Malo. The quay is lined with old stone houses, many of which are now waterside restaurants and chandlers’ shops. Take a walk along the old towpath or cross the 15th-century stone bridge to Lanvallay to find out about life on the river in the Maison de la Rance discovery centre. Wherever you are, you won’t miss the 131ft (40m)-high viaduct.

The medieval town of Dinan and port of Dinan is just 10 minutes drive. Port of St Malo is 15 minutes away. The coastal seaside town of Dinard is approx 20 minutes drive. City of Rennes is about a 20 minute drive.
