About the property

Cottage in L'Etang Bertrand, Nr. Bricquebec, Normandy, France - 30 minutes drive to the Normandy D-Day landing beaches. An hour's drive to the Bayeux tapestry.

Maison Bernard is a traditional stone cottage with many exposed beams which has been tastefully and fully modernised. Centrally located the cottage is 30 minutes drive from the ferry at Cherbourg, and 20 minutes from the beaches on the west or east coast. The views to the rear are of farmland and the charming, quiet, village has a church, an old mill, and an inn with a restaurant and bar. The tranquil River Douve runs through the village and the water meadows are particularly attractive. It is a perfect area for walkers, cyclists and young children. Step outside the front door and there are endless country lanes where in spring and summer the hedgerows are full of flowers.

The property has full high speed internet connection, but if you prefer you may browse our varied collection of books. Every room has electric central heating.

About Kit Jackson

The cottage in L'Etang Bertrand was where my mother lived for her last 10 years. After a life in publishing in London she moved to France to be halfway between us in London and her sister who lived in Provence.

When we later took over the property we upgraded and modernised it to suit our family of 2 daughters and ourselves. We still all use the cottage when we can get away. We'd like you use it as well.

We have always enjoyed the village, its people and the surrounding countryside. We hope you do to.

Kit Jackson purchased this cottage in 1990

We have just returned from 8 nights at this wonderful cottage in a beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very clean and well equipped with everything you and a family could ever need! It's beautifully decorated with a lovely feel that my whole family enjoyed! The location was perfect for us, gorgeous countryside, very peaceful and a lovely place to return to after a day on the beach or exploring the local towns, villages and museums. We found a couple of lovely restaurants a short drive from the house. We would highly recommend this house as a lovely place to explore Normandy from!

A charming and peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely two weeks at Maison Bernard. The cottage has been beautifully restored and is very comfortable, with a lovely homely atmosphere. The kids loved playing in the garden and we all enjoyed eating out on the patio listening to the church bells and the birdsong... wonderful!

Wonderful home from home

  • 5 of 5

Everything that you would need is there. The location is beautiful, to be able to hear the birds and watch the horses was magical. The walks from the cottage are lovely and you are not far from Bricquebec which is a pretty little town and Valognes which is also lovely. Will be back definitely

Car: necessary

To the west Carteret is 20 mins away with unspoilt sandy beaches, perfect for children. There is also a long-established sailing school and many seafood restaurants and bars. The rugged north-east coast is famous for oysters, while further south are the historic D-Day landing beaches and war museums. Especially interesting is the Airborne museum at Ste-Mère-Eglise, with original gliders and wartime equipment on view.

Further south west is the 8th century monastery of Mont St Michel.

L'Etang Bertrand is a half hour drive from the Cherbourg car ferry, and an hour and a half from Caen. We would say a car was essential as there is no shop in the village, although bread and croissants can usually be ordered from the local bar.

Our local town, Bricquebec, is a 5 minute drive or a peaceful half hour walk away. Market day is Monday morning and not to be missed. The larger town of Valognes where the train from Paris stops is a 20 minute drive away and has a market on Friday. The famous town of St Mere Eglise, the first town to be liberated, is only 25 minutes away, and the historic D-Day landing beaches and museums are a 40 minute drive. The tapestry in the picturesque town of Bayeaux is an hour's drive away.

Further Details:

Bricquebec has restaurants, cafes, bars, bakeries, butchers, banks and small shops. There is a large fish market. It also has 2 large supermarkets. Other restaurants and shops can be found in Valognes or Barneville-Carteret. It is a thriving, pretty town clustered around the high walls of a medieval castle. Within the walls is a charming hotel and top-quality restaurant, with an extensive wine list, in the old banqueting hall.
