About the property

Chalet in Les Correardes Sud, Nr. Lus La Croix Haute, French Alps - Idyllic Location, Close to Village, Restaurants

Situated close to the picturesque village of Lus la Croix Haute, with stunning mountain views and set in 2 acres of open garden and forest. Spring, summer, winter or autumn, there are always things to see and do. Ideal for families and energetic children, and anyone who enjoys the great outdoors!

Very well furnished and equipped 4* French Tourist Board Rated Chalet, located in Haute Provence within the Vercours National Park and set in 2 acres of Land.

Idyllic location, close to village and restaurants. Sleeps 7 (3 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms).

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, usually long hot days in the summer and skiing only a 5 minute drive away in the winter, you really can have the best of both worlds.

The village is a 2 minute drive or 10/15 minute (flat) walk from the house. There is a general store, butcher, bakery, 2 hotels/restaurants/bars and a local produce store. Generally you can get all you need in the village, however, there are 2 good supermarkets in Veynes (Super U and Dia) which is only a 20 minute drive.

There are several good restaurants in the village, but, Les Pervenches is only a 5 minute walk from the chalet and Nadine and Gilbert serve wonderful home cooked food, in a traditional French setting. If you have a moment, look on Trip Advisor at the reviews.

All the rooms are well heated with electric radiators and of course the wood burning fire in the lounge. The house is fully approved by the French Tourist Board and has a 4 star rating.

Bed linen, towels, electricity, wi-fi and wood for the fire are all included. There is a telephone for emergency use only.

The main living area is on the first floor which can be accessed either externally via steps (see photos) or internally from the 3rd bedroom also via some steps. Given the mezzanine floor and steps, we would suggest that the accommodation is not really baby or toddler friendly. Although having said that, we have had several guests and young children who have managed just fine. Utility room washing machine, tumble dryer, ironing board, vacuum cleaner.

Cleaning/towels/linen/maid service

Bed linen and towels are included. The house is very easy to keep clean, however, a cleaning service is available by arrangement.

The conservatory is great in the Spring, Summer and Autumn as the doors all slide open to allow uninterrupted views of the surrounding scenery and provide access to a cooling breeze. It gets a bit chilly in the winter, but doubles up as a really useful storage area for ski's and snowboards etc.

Underneath the lounge is a separate games room with a table tennis table, tennis and badminton rackets, boule, an archery set and a selection of games and toys.

Kitchen and dining

Very well equipped open plan kitchen (see photos) with cooker, hob, grill, microwave, coffee-machine, slow cooker, electric mixer, fridge/freezer and enough plates, glasses, assorted serving bowls etc to open a restaurant..! Generally, everything that you would ever need if you want to take advantage of the local produce and cook.

The dining table on the mezzanine floor seats 8 (although we have squeezed 9 in) In the summer though, the conservatory with its large sliding doors, is the place to eat.

There are 2 bbqs to cater from a feast to a more modest meal for 2...!

Living rooms

The lounge area has leather settees and a fantastic log burning fire for the winter. Wi-fi French/English Freesat tv. Flat screen tv with a very effective surround sound system for both the tv and music. Dvd, cd and MP3 player, telephone. There is a selection of dvd films, an extensive cd music collection and a bookcase full of holiday reads.

Bedrooms

Notes on bedrooms:

Bedroom 1, king size double bed.

Bedroom 2, 2 single beds and a captain's bed sleeps 1/2.

The captain's bed in bedroom 2 is a double mattress and will sleep 1 or 2 depending on size/age e.g. we have had 2

smaller 12 year olds or an adult and a child share, but not at the same time! If you need any advice on suitability, just ask. This is a good sized room and there is plenty of space for an additional inflatable bed on the floor if needed (can be supplied).

Bedroom 3, double bed and en suite bathroom.

Bathrooms

En suite bathroom to bedroom 3 with wc, large shower cubicle and basin.

Large main bathroom with wc, separate shower cubicle, basin and a proper full size "soaking/relaxing" bath.

Heating

All the rooms are well heated with electric radiators and of course the wood burning fire in the lounge.

Entertainment

Wi-fi French/English Freesat tv. Flat screen tv with a very effective surround sound system for both the tv and music. Dvd, cd and MP3 player, telephone. There is a selection of dvd films, an extensive cd music collection and a bookcase full of holiday reads.

Garden and outside

The chalet is set in 2 acres of land, mostly grass, so there is plenty of space for outside games, football etc. There are 6 sunloungers and a selection of games, boules, tennis rackets, archery set (child safe) etc.

There are 2 bbqs to cater from a feast to a more modest meal for 2...!

Parking and garages

With 2 acres of land, parking isn't a problem.....

Visitor suitability

The main living area is on the first floor which can be accessed either externally via steps (see photos) or internally from the 3rd bedroom also via some steps. Given the mezzanine floor and steps, we would suggest that the accommodation is not really baby or toddler friendly. Although having said that, we have had several guests with young children and babies who have managed just fine. Stairgates, high chair, travelcot available on request. Wheelchair access is very limited.

Information about any additional facilities

The village has a Tourist Information centre.

About Duncan & Sarah

I live in Warwickshire with my wife Sarah and two teenage daughters Lucy and Emma. We both work, so that, combined with Lucy and Emma's social and sporting commitments means that life is pretty hectic and normally runs at about 100 miles per hour (like many families) It's probably why we just really love any time we can get in Lus La Croix Haute, it's peaceful, but with plenty to see and do.

Duncan & Sarah purchased this chalet in 2003

Why Duncan & Sarah chose Lus-la-Croix-Haute

We had rented properties in France for several years starting off in Cognac and each year we moved further and further south for more reliable summer weather. When we found ourselves in a position to think about buying somewhere, I trawled the internet and just by chance came across a website which talked about the Drome/Northern Provence area (we are right on the border). We had already realised that we couldn't afford somewhere in southern provence, but prices were far more reasonable in the Drome and it seemed that not many people were aware of the area. So, usually good weather in the summer and skiing right on our doorstep in the winter seemed a "win win" solution. All I can say is that we have never regretted our decision. The area and scenery is just stunning and never dissapoints.

What makes this chalet unique

We bought Maison La Clairette because it ticked all the boxes..(apart from the cost of a complete refurbishment..!) Just over two acres of land, mostly grass but a good bit of forest as well. Walking distance to the village where you can get just about everything you need and a 5 minute walk to the nearest family run restaurant. With 4 proper seasons, we like going at any time of the year, as there is always something different to see and do. The chalet is flexible as it is not too big for 2 to share or too small for say 2 families to share (which really does make it good value) something that lots of our guests have commented on. If you have children there is plenty of space for them to play, explore or kick a ball about.

'We had a lovely week and all agreed that you have a superb chalet in a fantastic setting with amazing 360 degree views - couldn't praise it too highly. Jeremy Falle-Jersey.

“Just a short note to say that we all had a great time in your beautiful home. From start to finish, we had a relaxing and stress-free time, even with a 2yr and 3month old in tow.! The chalet is gorgeous and the village is really sweet, as are the locals. The surrounding area is great for walks & activities. Louise was really friendly & helpful as well. Loved it.”

Gary & Janette O’Hagan-N Ireland.

'We had a lovely holiday and the scenery and wild flowers were just stunning, it was lovely to see the wildlife in the area, birds that we don't see here and deer, marmots and what looked like red squirrels. The house had everything that we needed and we would certainly consider a return trip' Mr and Mrs Ward-York.

An enjoyable family stay at Maison La Clairette

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic half-term stay at Maison La Claret. The house was very comfortable and plenty of space for our family of five. The kitchen was well equipped. The open plan living dinning area worked very well for our family. The family enjoyed use of the table tennis table and archery set in the games room. The location of the house was perfect :- a short walk to the village shops and a family friendly ski resort only minutes away by car. Communication was excellent with the owner who could not be more helpful and informative. It was a great family holiday and hope to visit soon. The Dodgson Family

Wonderful chalet, great location!

  • 5 of 5

Cracking chalet in a great location. Well equipped and very comfortable. Nice and clean with everything we needed to make the stay pleasurable. No snow at Jarejarette, but good skiing on Super Devoluy which was less than an hours drive away with some breathtaking scenery. The chalet was always nice to come back to, especially with the fire and the logs which are provided. Some lovely walks around, and a wonderful restaurant in the village where we went twice because it was so good and Marie looked after both of our familes so well. Many thanks to Duncan and Sarah and Louise for making our stay so enjoyable...we have already booked again for next year!

Wonderful mountain chalet

  • 5 of 5

The property is a modern chalet which is well appointed with comfortable bedrooms, wood burner (with dry logs provided) and everything you need including a games room, wifi and even 2 barbecues. Location is stunning with easy access for walks or skiing. Less than 2 hours from Lyon airport. We had a lovely holiday, going for long walks, road trips in the mountains and visits to nearby towns. Excellent local restaurants. Excellent service with all our queries answered immediately.

Review of Maison La Clairette. Lus La Haute

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks in a gorgeous setting.

The chalet is well appointed, equipped, comfortable and with plenty of room for our family of four plus pooch to escape each other if needed. The balcony/conservatory is ideal for meals and playing games as the sun sets.

The views are stunning and the chalet is within easy access of the myriad of walks, climbs, tree wire walking, down hill biking and other activities which are on offer. The village pool was clean spacious and pretty much empty even on the weekends. There can't be many pools which allow you to scull about lazily whilst looking up at the mountain backdrop. The village is a short walk and quiet with a fun market twice a week and some nice bars and restaurants. A quiet location which is still within easy reach of transport networks to visit other parts of the region.

Would definitely return.

Fantastic retreat in beautiful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful family holiday in the chalet. The area surrounding Lus la Croix Haute is truly breathtaking. The chalet itself has everything you need for a relaxing holiday and was very clean when we arrived. The beds are very comfortable and though on several days the temperature reached 30 degrees we were never too hot in the evenings as the chalet (as long as the shutter are shut in the day when we were out) keeps nice and cool, though fans are available if needed.

We especially enjoyed walking up to Les Pervanches restaurant in the evening and sampling local produce cooked to perfection, and with a four course meal for 18 euros we could not have asked for more. We visited Gap and Die and especially loved the lake at Veynes and the natural plunge pool just a ten minute walk away. There is more than enough to keep you occupied in the area but if you are just feeling lazy then the chalet has 2 acres of grounds, a table tennis table and sunbeds.

The chalet was everything we were hoping for and Duncan could not have been more helpful, always replying to queries however trivial within just a few hours in many cases.

We will certainly be recommending the chalet to family and friends.

Owner's Response: Hi Jo, I think you have pretty much summed it all up in your review, so pleased that you all had such a good time as a family. Les Pervenches is our favourite restaurant, only 5 minutes walk from the chalet and while the last bit might be up hill on the way there, the important return bit is all downhill..! Traditional French home cooking at it's very best and great value. Thank you for your comprehensive review which we really do value. Thank you. Duncan & Sarah

Beautiful location, clean, comfortable house.

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we first enquired about this property, Duncan was v helpful, welcoming of questions and quick to respond. The house itself was v comfortable and clean and it was lovely to walk the 10 minutes to the village to go to the bakery or eat in one of the local restaurants. Would definitely recommend staying here if you simply want time and space to relax and get away from it all.

Owner's Response: Hi Fiona, Really pleased that you all enjoyed your time at the chalet and in and around the village and area. There is certainly no shortage of things to do, from the very active, to the glass of wine and reading a book on the balcony and everything in between...! Thank you for taking the time to submit a review, which is really appreciated. Duncan & Sarah

Location

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

From Lus la Croix Haute you can drive to the Mediterranean coast in around 2.5 hours.

Travel:

If you want to fly and drive, Lyon or Grenoble airports are the nearest. We favour Lyon as there are more flights and choice of car hire companies. From Lyon (St Expury) it really is a very easy drive to Lus la Croix Haute and will take under 2 hours. The drive from Calais to Lus is also very easy with motorways all the way except for the last 40 minutes as you climb into the southern alpes. We allow 8.5 - 9.0 hours including a couple of breaks for the journey (with children..!).

Distances:

The village is a 2 mins drive or 10/15 mins walk from the house. There is a general store, butcher, bakery, 2 hotels/restaurants/bars, bank (only open on certain days) post office and local produce store. Generally you can get all you need in the village. however, there are 2 good supermarkets in Veynes which is a 20 minute drive. The nearest large town is Gap which is just under an hours drive from Lus as is Grenoble and Sisteron which is also worth a visit.

Further Details:

The area around the house and generally is perfect for those who enjoy being outside, so, ideal for families, couples and anyone else, with some breathtaking walks, mountain biking, climbing, acro buech (climbing around on wires in the trees at La Jarjatte) canoeing, down hill biking (La Jarjatte - August only) hot air ballooning and gliding to name but a few. From the house there are literally miles of marked walking and biking trails that take you through the forest and up through the mountains. You can walk to the top of the Chamouset or to the ‘lake on top of the mountain’! From a gentle ramble to the near vertical there is something for everyone. We enjoy mountain biking along the marked forest trails, the air is clear and just so peaceful it really is fantastic. The village also has a large outdoor heated pool which is open from mid June - August the last time we were there the water was a very pleasant 26 degrees. If you drive to Serres (about 30 minutes) there is a huge reservoir which also incorporates a large swimming and sunbathing area together with pedalo/boat rental. It is a good day or half day excursion and not expensive. Even closer in Veynes (20 minutes) is a large lake, great for swimming and free. The village also has a tennis court which you can book at the local produce store...of course! In the summer, there are two markets a week in the village and if you are there at the right time, sometimes a fun fair or circus. If you don't feel like cooking or BBQing, there are two restaurants/hotels in the village. However, our favourite eatery is a 5 minute walk from the house. Les Pervenches serves fantastic homemade food with most of the ingredients grown in the garden. With the house wine at around €4.00 a bottle, the food and wine bill won't break the bank! Outdoor activities are not compulsory and chilling out with a good book in the conservatory or garden are just as effective from a therapy point of view.
