Heckbarley is our individually designed, detached cottage, situated in the heart of the village of unspoiltEnnerdale Bridge. Bright and airy inside, it is comfortably furnished and well equipped, with fell views and a pleasing rear outlook over fields to the River Ehen. Enclosed South facing garden. Lounge has Sky TV and mixed fuel burning stove. New bathroom, also ensuite shower. Pub and children's adventure playground just down the road. Situated within the Lake District National Park, 1 mile from tranquil Ennerdale Water - the only one of the larger lakes with no road along its shoreline. Strolls along the shoreline or walks up into the high fells. Also cycling, riding, fishing, golf. Visit the landscapes of Beatrix Potter: Loweswater, Crummock Water, Buttermere within easy reach; historic towns of Cockermouth and Whitehaven within 10 miles. A bonus is that its only a short drive to the coast at St. Bees with its sandy beach and clifftop walks. We now also have internet access.

Nice, tidy,

Very spacious nice and tidy house. Provide all for our big family. All different age groups found what they like. The location is so good. Although it is bit far from the centre of the Lake District but it was so nice to have a quite real holiday. Views around the nearest lake is so good.

Owner's Response: We do have a good location in the Lake District National Park. The property lies in a quiet village and within 200m metres of two pubs, yet within a mile of Ennerdale Water, unspoilt and fantastic walking - paths and tracks for walkers and cyclists alike. It doesn't have the queues of Windermere, and it is because we aren't in the centre of the Lake District that the village is quiet and valley of Ennerdale is unspoilt. These are worth a look: http://www.wildennerdale.co.uk/ https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/wild-ennerdale-cumbria We aren't far from Buttermere , Loweswater and Crummock Water - three more Lakes if you wish to see other local beautiful places in the National Park. Areas including these were in the Beatrix Potter Films. We are within 30 minutes drive of the West Coast of Britain. Go to the beach at St Bees. So the best of both worlds - Mountains , yes, and the Coast -easy to get to.

Location

This is a wonderfully tranquil and beautiful part of the Lake District National Park. You are close to a fantastic Lake - Ennerdale Lake which is as clear and clean as you can find anywhere. Ennerdale has forestry tracks and which is great for cycling. You have great views of Pillar, you can see down in to Buttermere valley from the tops, and Red Pike, High Stile, and many others provide great walking. The walk around the Lake provides a taste of what lies further up Wild Ennerdale valley. If you like the beach, you are less than 25 mins from the coast by car. You do not get traffic jams on the roads or queues of walkers up the fell paths. If you have not tried this part of the Lake District you should come and have a look!

For outdoor sports enthusiasts the opportunities are endless.

Walking: Strolls along the shoreline of Ennerdale Water, along Wainwright's famous Coast to Coast Path, or up into the high fells - Great Gable, Pillar and the High Stile Ridge all form part of the Ennerdale skyline. Only a short drive to the nearby lakes of Buttermere, Crumnmock Water and Loweswater.

Climbing: The classic climbs of Pillar Rock, Kern Knotts, Napes Needle and Burtness Combe are within easy reach.

Cycling: Whitehaven to Ennerdale cyclepath, a 10 mile long surfaced route, with unique sculptures providing interest along the way. This is part of the Coast to Coast cycle route, the jewel of Sustrans national cycle network. For more off-road cycling, Ennerdale forest offers rides on sheltered, low level forest tracks and Whinlatter Forest Park also has a network of surfaced trails.

Horse Riding: Trekking for all ages and abilities available at Ennerdale.

Fishing: Available on several local lakes.

Coast/Beach:

For a trip to the seaside we recommend St. Bees Heritage Coast, with its lovely sandy beach and Priory Church. You can also walk the first portion of the Coast to Coast Path along the 300ft high cliffs which afford spectacular views and the chance to glimpse rare seabirds as this is an RSPB reserve. If you are feeling energetic, you can follow the path all the way to the lighthouse at North Head.

Further afield is the Solway Coast, an AONB for Silloth and Alloby beaches.

Distances:

A little over a mile takes you to Ennerdale Water. Picnic area at Bowness Knot with gentle strolls along the shoreline and marked forest trails. An entire circuit of the lake shore takes several hours, a highlight being the traverse of the rocky outcrop, Anglers Crag.

Historic towns of Cockermouth and Whitehaven within 10 miles - 15 mins drive (both have larger supermarkets) and Keswick 30 mins drive.

Landscapes: There is plenty to see beyond Ennerdale, visit the landscapes of Beatrix Potter, featured in the recent movie "Miss Potter" - nearby Loweswater and Whitehaven have starring roles. Wasdale has England's deepest lake, Wastwater, and highest mountain, Scafell. Neighbouring Eskdale is a real contrast with sleepy villages, lovely low level walks around the River Esk and Stanley Ghyll Force, as well as the wonderful Ravenglass and Eskdale steam railway, which will delight children. Muncaster Castle has beautiful gardens, famous for rhododendrons, the daily owl show and medieval castle.

Nearby towns include; Cockermouth:- Visit Wordsworth house and Jennings Brewery. Boutiques, antique shops and galleries and you can stroll by the river in Memorial Gardens. Trotters World of Animals is good for families. Whitehaven:- The Beacon at the regenerated harbour and The Rum Story. St. Nicholas Church is set in beautiful gardens. Keswick:- a tourist magnet on wet days with all the outdoor shops you could dream of; indoor swimming pool with flumes and wave machine; Museum and Art Gallery, Puzzling Place, Cumberland Pencil Museum and Cars of the Stars. Egremont:- Traditional lakeland town with Egremont castle and Florence Mine.

Within an hour and a half's drive you can visit almost anywhere in the Lake District, for example the well known attractions of:

Grasmere and Wordsworth's homes Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount. Windermere with steamboat and watersports. The Beatrix Potter attraction 'The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends' at Bowness. Ullswater and Aira Force waterfall. Rheged Centre at Penrith with giant Imax Movies, National Mountaineering Exhibition, shops selling local crafts and food. Grizedale Forest with its theatre, sculpture trails and the adrenaline pumping 'Go Ape' aerial zip slides, rope bridges and scramble nets on a continuous trail up to 18m above the forest floor.

On departure, the cottage should be left in a clean and tidy condition, and any breakages paid for. £300 breakages deposit required as a deposit against such circumstances and will be returned in full on satisfactory vacation of the cottage.

Changeover Day:
A week’s let commences on Friday at 4pm and ends the following Friday at 10.30am. 2, 3 or 4 night short breaks available all year - Friday or Monday start days.

From the Owner

The property is a minute from the pub, which does good food too. You are still have great views looking on to fields and the River Ehen. We like looking at the horses when and sheep when they are grazing there. The garden is South facing and enjoys the sun all day. You see the sun set over the back, and it gets dark at 11pm in the summer, so can enjoy the conservatory till late. The property is modern and spacious, sleeps 10 and our children enjoy the table tennis, snooker and sky TV

  • Notes on accommodation: Heating is provided by electric night storage heaters. Children are welcome (cot, high chair and stair-gate available on request). Garden is gated. Lovely children's adventure playground just down the road. Outside: For warm summer evenings, the lounge doors open onto a west facing patio where you can enjoy the sunshine, and overlooking a field with horses grazing and The River Ehen. The large south-facing conservatory opens onto the private lawned garden. Many people like this especially to relax in early sunny mornings and in the evenings. Utility Room: Washing machine in kitchen (and condenser dryer in garage). Iron and ironing board Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Coal and wood provided for stove. Cleaned weekly on departure. Linen is included. Please bring your own towels. We have a local housekeeper and cleaner. Other: South-facing conservatory. Games facilities: board games, snooker table and table tennis in garage, parking for 1 large car in our drive, plenty of parking for cars also on quiet road in centre of village (all within 20 metres)
