About the Owner

We live in England and have two grown up daughters, three beautiful granddaughters and an adorable black Labrador. We enjoy our time so much at the house, we feel we can escape from the busy lives we lead at home. We particularly enjoy it when our daughter's and their families come down and we spend time all together. We thought for several years about buying a second home abroad and in 2006 we took the plunge.

Totally out of character I said to my husband I wanted the house before I had even been inside. The views from the patio are beautiful and I could just imagine sitting there watching the world go by, and it was snowing at the time!

We refer to our house as our little piece of heaven on earth.

We enjoy being able to just walk out the door and take our dog for a lovely long walk, sometimes not meeting anyone all day. We also enjoy going for scenic drives, maybe when the legs are aching a bit from the mountain walks!

One of our favourite drives is through Gorges des Gats, an absolutely amazing drive, it took our breathe away the first time we did it and still does 9 years later.

The cottage was in good order and well stocked. The views and surrounding area was outstanding.

We had a fantastic time and the owners were extremely helpful. We are planning on going back. The village has good supplies and a lovely little market. The cottage is beautifully situated with walks all around and stunning views.

Well equiped and very comfortable

We enjoyed our stay, the property was comfortable and well equipped. There was wifi and freestat television. On our first day we drove 10 miles to a supermarket, but the mini market, baker and butcher in the village was able to supply all additional food.

We enjoyed the numerous mountain walks in the vicinity, many of which there was no need to drive a few miles to a car park.

Owner's Response: We love the village shops, especially the butcher, his meat is very good quality. We were reluctant to have the internet for a long time but we are pleased we had it installed as it is very welcomed by our guests.

a very comfortable property in a stunning location

The property was just what it said it would be - comfortable, well-equipped, and surrounded by amazing alpine scenery. The flower meadows around the bungalow were stunning. The owners were very helpful and the administration of the booking etc was very efficient.

Lus is a pleasant village with all the necessary basic amenities for a self-catering holiday. We had hoped to do some walking in the area but the weather was so hot we took to more relaxing activities and gentle strolls around the village.

We were lucky enough to travel through Diois during the Fete de la Transhumance - enjoyed the festival at Die on the Saturday, en route to Lus, and then encountered the flocks of sheep on the move at Luc en Diois later in the week.

We treated ourselves to a lunch cruise on Lac de Moneyard - a very special day -a two and a half hour cruise with good food, spectacular scenery and some special wild-life.

A visit to Gap was well worth the journey and the free park and ride was an unexpected bonus. (in fact all local buses in Gap are free!)

If you are interested in flora, fauna, geology, social history, walking there is plenty to interest you in this area in summer.

A mixed bag ....

This little house is in a glorious position overlooking a valley and surrounded by mountains. The owner, Sue, was very responsive and helpful to my inquiries before booking (and before we left the UK), and thanks to her we did a couple of magnificent drives that I would have hated to have missed. The house itself is tiny and the fittings are very basic but there was everything we needed there. I have to say though that it was really disappointing to discover on arrival that it's semi detached with a shared patio area. We were lucky in that there was no-one in the other half while we were there, but I would not have booked it if it was made clear in the details that we could potentially have been in such close proximity to other people.

We took two well behaved spaniels with us since the house is dog friendly, and they enjoyed the beautiful walks that one can do from the house. However there is no fenced in area where dogs can be outside securely .... this was very much the way of things in the village, and I have no issue with that at all, it's just not necessarily what we and our dogs are used to. Again, it would have been helpful to know this before I booked.

Overall it was a good holiday in spectacular scenery ... the Alps are a living geology lesson and there is an ooh aah moment round virtually every corner.

Relaxing idyll

A clean, well-maintained property.Comfortably sleeps 4-6

Property had everything you needed and an excellent powerful shower!

Views were ever changing in the wonderful mountain light and the sky at night was breathtaking.

Well appointed for walking trails and for all levels of walker.Very friendly considerate neighbours and an inquisitive cat.

Lus La Croix Haute has all you could want for. The Boulangerie/Boucherie/Cave provided wonderful delights;great bread, superb meat,jams,wine and homemade cakes.There is a good local supermarket too and excellent markets.Restaurants all appeared good and were well used by locals and tourists.

Did not feel the need to travel too far as everything on your doorstep.

What a Gem!

You read accommodation reviews before you go but there is always that nagging feeling that it all sounds too good to be true. Well, in this case, all the reviews are spot on!

What a find. A great base for walks, both easy and challenging, and we would imagine good for nearby skiing come winter time. We also found it ideal for exploration by car of the locality with the towns of Die, Gap, Sisteron and Grenoble all within an hours easy drive [aren't the French road surfaces so much better than the English ones!]. And it is so easy to just stop off in any of the sleepy small villages and communities to appreciate their history......and enjoy a coffee!

The drive west to Chatillion [and Die] is amazing, by the way. Nothing in the British Isles touches it!

As stated before the accommodation and its facilities were very good and spotless so full marks to the local lady who manages the property for the owners. The village itself is close by for provisions so you could so easily stay 'local' and chill out completely surrounded by the mountain scenery.

We motored down from Gloucestershire over two days, using the keenly priced DFDS Dover - Dunkirk ferry and a mix of National and motorway routes. An overnight stay each way at a vineyard in Trefoil in the Champagne region was good value, especially with a hearty breakfast and vineyard tour/tasting thrown in. A good way to see the real France.

PS: Since returning to the UK some research has confirmed that you can leave London nine'ish in the morning by Eurostar, swop terminals in Lille or Paris for an afternoon TGV service to Grenoble, then a local train onto Lus itself, and you are there for evening dinner! It appears so easy so we will be trying it on our next visit.

From the Owner

We primarily bought the house as a place to relax and enjoy ourselves but also as an investment. We love the area because life is a much slower pace, the village is a nice size as it has all the amenities but it is not too large. We didn't want to live in a village that was too remote because of the heavy snowfall in winter but we wanted somewhere we could go skiing and not travel too far. We enjoy our house with our family and friends and have many happy memories. Now we have the added joy of enjoying the house with our little granddaughters. We hope you enjoy our house as much as we do!

The ideas listed below are some of our favourite things to do when we are at the house. This is my no means a definitive guide, just some of our ramblings to give you some ideas. Enjoy!


After 10 years of visiting the area twice a year, this is still my favourite drive and enthralls me everytime. Go out of the village towards Grenoble on the D1075 and take the turning on the left for Col de Grimone and stay on this road all the way to Chatillon-en-Diois. First of all you will climb up to Col de Grimone and then start to descend into beautiful countryside and eventually an amazing gorge. After several miles of gently descending you enter the town of Chatillon-en-Diois. This is a beautiful little town which is worthwhile having a stroll around, maybe stopping for lunch or a drink. You will notice the architecture has become more Provencal and the weather is generally drier and hotter. If you then drive to Die you will go through vineyards. You can either retrace your route or drive to Luc-en-Diois through to Apres-sur-Beuch and back to Lus-la-Croix-Haute. Please visit www.chatillonendiois-tourisme.com for more information.



There are so many beautiful old hilltop villages in and around Provence it is difficult to say which one is the best. We personally like Rosans, it is one of the more popular ones, but not overcrowded. It’s a lovely place to wander around and see the old buildings perched on the hillside. As you go into the village by car watch out for birds of prey soaring around catching the thermals. Please visit www.rosans.com for more information.


Walk around Lac de Monteynard

When you are coming from our village, go north towards Grenoble and when you get to the roundabout just before you get on the motorway, instead of going on the motorway take the next turning and go down into Monestier de Clermont and follow the signs to Lac de Monteynard where there are several car parks.

There are several routes you can take around the lake using La Mira (the boat) as well. We have walked from Treffort which is where the boat pier is and walked along to Passerelle de l‘Ebron, one of the suspension bridges. We intended walking to Passerelle du Drac, the other suspension bridge and then walk down and catch the boat back from Les Champs. We did it at the end of July and it was just too hot for us to be out in the sun, so we retraced our steps, of lot of which was in the shade. There is also the opportunities to experience water sports on the lake but we haven’t tried them. For more information please visit www.lac-monteynard.com


It is about 2.5 hours by car to the South of France.


Nearest airport is Grenoble approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, Lyon and Marseille airports are both about 2 hours. Car hire is available from all airports. The use of a car is recommended although there is a train station nearby giving access to Marseille and Grenoble. There is a taxi available in the village. The village is about 600 miles from Calais, motorway from Calais to within 20 miles of the village.


Two minutes walk to the village to get your croissants for breakfast, the nearest town is Veynes which is 26km (2 large supermarkets). Half and hour from northern part of Provence.

Further Details:

There is a lovely very French family restaurant in Les Correades, which is walking distance from the house. Advanced booking is necessary as it gets booked up very quickly. On your walk back to the house you can see so many stars as there is no street lighting along the road.

There is a good restaurant in the village owned by an English couple. They have themed evenings which makes the dining experience more interesting. Further details on request. 23/5/16 this has been taken over by a French family. We are visiting at the weekend so we will pay it a visit and update the details on our return.

  • Notes on accommodation: The property meets all safety requirements by French Tourist Board and has a 2 star rating. Dogs are welcome with own bed and by prior arrangement with the owner. Outside: The outside of the property has a large sunny patio with panoramic views. The grass is kept tidy around the property with plenty of space for children to play safely. The field is not mown on a regular basis as we let the farmer use the land. However if it is laid to grass and you are quite welcome to use it. We have a patio set which will seat 6 people and barbecue. A washing line is around the side of the property. We have a cellar where skis, bikes etc can be stored. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Excess cleaning will be charged at £15.00 per hour. Bed linen extra.
