Holiday Homes in Valdottavo, Nr. Lucca, Tuscany, Italy - Peaceful Woodland Setting, 5 Minutes Walk to Village Centre
La Fornace and Casa Fiona are 100 year old, fully restored traditional Tuscan houses: bathrooms and kitchens and all services are new, whilst the character has been retained.
'La Fornace' takes its name from the nearby brick kiln, from which the houses were built, and which housed its workers' families. The ground floor of La Fornace was the cantina, where animals lived, and the restored space retains its historic character from rough stone and brick walls and chestnut beam ceilings. It contains a spacious kitchen with all conveniences, and large and beautiful dining room. Adjoining the front terrace, it is an ideal space to enjoy the cool in the summer heat, or feast in the evening.
On the first floor is a spacious and well lit living room, opening at the back on to a terrace with views over the valley. A wood stove, and Tuscan terracotta tiles, yellow wash walls and dark chestnut beams combine here to create a warm and characterful space to read and relax in. Along the corridor, the master bedroom is the most peaceful and magical room in the whole house, its tiled floor, beamed ceiling and brick walls all original, with a balcony overlooking the surrounding woodland. Opposite is a modern bathroom (bath, shower, toilet, basin).
On the second floor are three further bedrooms. The second master bedroom is large with a high ceiling and its chestnut windows giving on to woodland. Another double room at the back of the house has extensive views over the valley, and the fourth bedroom can either be a comfortable adult single or childrens' double. All are decorated in local style. There is a shower room with toilet and basin.
'Casa Fiona' adjoins Casa Fornace and is a gem of a cottage for a couple plus child (or two smaller children). The floors and ceilings had completely collapsed when we bought this property, but walls and roof beams are original and have been tastefully incorporated into the restoration which uses local chestnut from the Garfagnana national park around.
The front door is accessed from the main terrace. On the ground floor there is a living and eating area with galley kitchen, which includes gas hob, electric oven , and large 'Belfast' style sink. Windows look on to the pool and garden.
Upstairs a stunning and spacious double bedroom with high ceiling includes access to the back terrace, a lovely spot to catch the early rays with a coffee and a book. The second bedroom offers plentiful room and comfort for another adult or two children. Both rooms enjoy a glorious view over the garden and pool.
The peace and beauty of the houses, garden and pool in their woodland surroundings, the convenience and friendliness of the village and the opportunities presented by the nearby cities, beaches and hills of Tuscany. A holiday to cherish.

Guestbook comments from the owner
'I would like to thank you for the wonderful week we had at your house. The house is fantastic, clean and in such a lovely location, and beautifully restored, it's just as we imagined Italy would be. Our children enjoyed the pool and we couldn't get them out of it! We loved Tuscany and I would have no hesitation in recommending your accommodation to friends and family.'
'We had a wonderful holiday and just wanted to say how much we all enjoyed being in your 2nd home! It was so beautiful there and was so ideal for my family. I now have to see if I can find away to repeat it all, perhaps in 2 or 3 years time, so we can look forward to it all over again.'
'Just wanted to let you know that we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Valdottavo - the villas were just ideal for us.'
From the Owner
“Wake up in the morning surrounded by woods and birdsong. Catch the early sun at the back terrace, enjoying the views across the valley whilst you wake up or read. Take a stroll to the village to have a coffee and 'dolce'. Return for a dip and relax on the pool terrace or front terrace. Repeat all day / every day as the children demand, or ... Decide which day you wish to visit the seaside, experience mountain scenery, or sightsee Tuscany's stunning towns and villas, all within a hour's drive. Pop into Lucca for lunch, cycle round the city walls, shop, enjoy fabulous food, or just mosey around. Enjoy superb local cuisine for a very modest outlay, or cook a meal or barbeque by the pool. Sit out in the balm of the evening watching the fireflies in the garden.”

“The property lies on a rise just 5 minutes walk from the centre of Valdottavo, a traditional working village. Local people are welcoming and friendly, especially in the two local cafe bars and family owned food shops. Ask for home baked bread, local tomatoes, olives and fresh produce. It is possible to while away the holiday by the pool, eating delicious local food. A number of nearby restaurants serve delicious pizza, pasta, seafood and hearty Tuscan cuisine at very reasonable prices, the closest of which is 1km away. Nearby Lucca is only 20 mins, en route 'Esselunga' supermarket whose deli counter is the stuff of dreams. Lucca is a walled medieval city to cycle or walk around, and whose alleys and piazzas, cafes, restaurants and shops, Roman amphitheatre and Renaissance cathedral offer wonderful family days out without crowds, stress and too much expense. Pisa and Florence, the lesser known Pistoia and Prato, and Tuscany's many villas are an easy day's excursion, as are the elegant Art Deco seaside resorts of Viareggio and Camaiore. Hire a beach umbrella and deckchairs for a day and enjoy the fresh seafood and ice cream. The Garfagnana National Park is all around and its steep wooded slopes, hill villages and stunning views are to be explored. 2000m peaks of the Appenine range offer superb hiking, sub-alpine flora and breathtaking views, above all in spring and autumn when the natural beauty is at its height.”
