House in Los Urrutias, Nr. Los Alcazares, Costa Calida, Spain - Spectacular Views over the Mar Menor from Secluded Roof Terrace

The property boasts gorgeous views across the Mar Menor from both the front patio and the roof terrace and, with the beach just a few paces away and no road to cross, provides the base for a wonderfully relaxing and safe holiday. Even the more reluctant bather will enjoy the calm waters of the Mar Menor, which has water temperatures often several degrees above those of the Mediteranean and gently sloping sand underfoot. Casa Maria is a very comfortable little house; it is furnished to a high standard and well-equipped. It has air-conditioning to keep you cool in the summer and underfloor heating to warm you during the winter evenings.

Hi, I am Mary (hence Casa Maria!) Day, and I live in a small village in a house with a lovely view just south of Bristol.

Why Mary Day chose Cartagena

We were on holiday in the area and loved the beach front promenade in Los Urrutias. There was a run down house for sale right on the water, five yards from the front gate to the sand, and no road to cross! We took a deep breath and embarked on the purchase and complete renovation of the house.

What makes this house unique

The roof terrace that we added now takes advantage of the great unobstructed view over the beach, Mar Menor and islands, and no one walking past knows that you're there! The extended family, including our two grown up sons, go there as much as we can, but in between our visits, our house has proved to be popular with couples and small groups who want a non-tourist location with no noisy beach front bars, whilst not being in the middle of nowhere. If you want a dip in the Mar Menor, you don't have to pack anything for the trip - you just walk out the door and you're there!

Notes on accommodation: The lounge has two full-double sofa beds in addition to the kingsize bed in the bedroom, making the house comfortable for up to 4 people. There is full air-conditioning, all windows are double glazed, and there is underfloor heating for the winter evenings. A safe is installed for your convenience. Cots can be hired locally; please ask for details. This is a non-smoking house. Pets are not permitted. Outside: Outside, there is an enclosed 18 x 12 front patio, directly off the seafront promenade. Casa Maria's crowning glory, however, is the full-width, private roof terrace from which you can gaze out over the beautiful Mar Menor with its many islands and La Manga strip in the far distance. The partially-covered terrace is ideal for sunbathing, enjoying a romantic evening meal or just relaxing in the shade with a long cool drink. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen and towels are provided for your use. (Not beach towels - please bring your own.) Other: Laundry - washing machine, clothes line, steam iron and ironing board.

perfect beachside house

The owner Mary Day always replied promptly to our e-mails and her advice and directions on how to drive there were invaluable. The house was spotless and the rooftop area is the best we have ever had. There are many other beaches around and taking the train from los Nientos station to Cartagena only takes 1/2 hour (easy parking in the station car park).

Lovely sea front property would have given it five stars if there was sun beds

The property was in a good position for local shops and bars could stay with out a car would be nice to have sun beds the only done side was we were asked for a 67€ cleaning charge when we arrived which we did not know about

Location Location Location

This was an area of Spain we had not visited so this year we decided to take a look at it. We enjoy self-catering, and we really do self-cater, so a fully equipped kitchen is critical. This holiday there was to be just two of us so wanted one (double) bedroomed accommodation. Casa Maria matched our criteria and had the added benefit of being on the front line, literally just off the beach, with a large solarium, accessed via spiral stair, in addition to a patio at the front of the property. The property also has a large lounge which could accommodate more guests if necessary which we used for our evening meal, after the sun had gone down.

We woke each morning to the sun rising over La Manga with Heron and Egrets “breakfasting” just in front of us. The weather the first two days permitted us to have breakfast on the roof with the dramatic view and warm sun. We were out exploring from early morning until late at night but anyone wanting a more relaxing break would be able to enjoy the patio and solarium to the maximum as the solarium is in the sun the whole day. Los Urutias is a quiet village with a couple of shops selling the basics and a few bars and restaurants. We shopped at Lidl and Consum in Los Alcazares a 10 minute drive away, they are next door to each other so very convenient.

The location was perfect for us, good road links, enabling us to get to Cartagena and Murcia which were both enjoyable to visit for the architecture and history, they also have good shopping areas. Our real delight was the countryside and wild flowers which were in abundance, the old road to Puerto de Mazarron from Cartagena was very picturesque but the highlight of our holiday were our visits to Calablanque! La Manga is all high rise, from the road, but reportedly has beaches on both the Mar Menor and Med, though apart from a visit to Punta Risi and Cabo de Palos (opposite ends of the strip) we did not have time to explore further.

Our holiday was a great experience and the week was not long enough to see all there is in the area, with Casa Maria providing a comfortable home to return to at the end of each enjoyable day. Michael and Mary were very helpful, providing information by phone and e-mail prior to and after booking. They arranged for our meet and greet at the property, which was very efficient and helpful as Mary (one based in Spain) had a lot of local knowledge and Michael and Mary were swift to refund the “damage deposit” almost before we arrived home.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice review. Calblanque is a favourite day out for us too. Even some locals seem not to have heard of it! The tracks within the park are quite rough, but it's worth the effort. Out of season, the lovely beaches are pretty much deserted, and on a breezy day the waves are quite a contrast to the tranquility of the Mar Menor.

another delightful week...

We said we would return and we have! Again what a delightful "house on the beach" which served us so well. Everything went according to plan from our first booking enquiry to walking out the door of Casa Maria on our last day. It was a very hot week so it was lovely to sit and do nothing except think about the next meal.The air conditioning was a life saver and worked really well !

We did not hire a car as intended... far too hot to contemplate ...maybe next time ...! it was good to read and save other reviews with comments about bike and car hire. Thank you Michael and Mary and Lorraine for preparing the house for our arrivial

Whilst Los Urrutias is a bustling, friendly, genuinely Spanish resort in the high season, it's also a great place to unwind and do as little or as much as you want to at other times. Even in December, it's fairly hot during the middle of the day, and the Mar Menor is much warmer than the North Sea in August! Mary and Michael

2nd visit to Casa Maria

This was our second stay at this perfect location. Owners communication pre & post holiday was excellent as usual with our deposit returned before we arrived back in the UK! We hired bikes from Border Bike Hire who kindly picked us up at the airport & dropped us at the villa & also organised the return trip to the airport. This meant we were able to cycle the whole of the Mar Menor & visit all the towns/villages along the way.

We have previously taken the train from Los Nietos to Cartagena, so this time opted for the bus from Los Urrutias to Murcia city which leaves from the Sol y Mar hotel in the village.

Another highlight was the Thursday market in the village which provided fresh fruit & veg for the week - the butchery at the new supermarket just across the road was excellent too. We intended to eat out every other night, but eating on Casa Maria's roof terrace overlooking the sea as the sun went down was such a wonderful experience that we repeated it every night,

If you want to experience being part of a real Spanish community then this house is perfect - we didn't encounter a fellow Brit until the last day of our stay. A few Spanish words go along way, but we found the locals to be most helpful & they would always find someone to translate when our Spanish let us down! An all round wonderful experience and most relaxing holiday in a perfect location. We look forward to our 3rd visit as soon as we can make it
